On days like this, when Temperatures here in Southern California reach into the triple digits, I look back through my images of places I’d rather be at this time of year. Bear Viewing in Alaska always tops my list. So, here’s a Pic from an Alaska Bear-Viewing Adventure.
One thing that makes Alaska unique is that all three species of North American bears flourish here. It is not uncommon for residents or visitors to Alaska to see bears, usually from a safe distance. But even if you don't see a bear, you will never be far from one; Alaska is bear country.
Brown Bear. The awe-inspiring brown bear lives in the forests and mountains of northern North America, Europe, and Asia. It is the most widely distributed bear in the world.
The world's largest brown bears are found in coastal British Columbia and Alaska, and on islands such as Kodiak.
Brown bears are the most common. In the Interior, they are called grizzly bears and are smaller and lighter brown. These bears have rounder faces than blacks, along with a noticeable muscular hump at their shoulders, giving them the strength to unearth ground squirrels from deep within their burrows.
Also, brown bear feet can average twice the size of black bear feet—compare the distances between the claw and pad imprints.
I Found this Big Boy while he was moving from one fishing hole to another in Katmai National Park.
Katmai National Park and Preserve is on a peninsula in southern Alaska. Its wild landscapes span tundra, forests, lakes and mountains. The park is known for the many brown bears that are drawn to the abundant salmon.

The temperature topped out at 35 F (1 C) with a 40+ mph wind today, but at least we had the river all to ourselves. Best of all, the suckers were really on the bite!
With the temperatures soaring into the high 30s°C (100°F+/-), I decided to take an A/C drive in the evening and see what I could see. My first stop was five minutes from town, when I spotted this Common Nighthawk on a fence post.
I got out of the car and did my best casual approach, in the open, focusing my attention on some butterflies in the ditch. The nighthawk watched me. At this distance, it looked about to fly, but it didn't, and when I drove away it was still at rest. No one wants to fly in heat like that.
Nighthawks are in the Goatsucker family, which includes nightjars and whip-poor-wills. They have extraordinarily wide mouths for catching insects out of the air, and have surprised me many times by swooping low and unleashing their booming call, a startling sound emanating from such a small bird. Just yesterday evening I was sitting outside with some friends after supper when a nighthawk zig zagged through the air right above our heads, off on its nightly rounds. They always bring a smile.

take a walk in the nearby Dark Forest, one of the most beautiful forests in Greece, which owes its name to the density of the trees that let no sun light reach the ground.
First temperatures below freezing last night gave us a frosty start to the day. We'll be back in to the 60's later but the time for the gardens to go back to dreaming is close at hand.

Captured many obelisking dragonflies as they tried to regulate their body temperature on another very hot day in Florida . Celithemis eponina.
It was still quite cold... This Hairy-footed Flower Bee (see Bernhard Jacobi commenting below), laden with pollen, brought to mind something I read recently about the body temperature of Bees. Scientists have discovered that the heavier their pollen load, the higher their body temperature rises. In warm weather that can lead to the heat exhaustion of our woolly friends. No fear of that yesterday in the Hortus where Hairy-footer was garnering nutrients from under the hood of Yellow Clary.
Sunny and short (brrrr temperatures) winter walk in Berlin's government district along the Spree, and more "This is a black and white scene" photography. I mentioned earlier that, most of the time, I just take the shot and decide later if I process an image in colour (most of the time) or black and white (more often recently). And here, I knew immediately that it's one for Donnerstagsmonochrom :)
HTM/HMT, dear Flickr friends!
These are the Cuchara Mountains, a small isolated range of the Rockies in south central Colorado, very close to the New Mexico border. Winter hangs on for a large part of the year here. This photo taken at almost 10,000 feet elevation shows that it's almost June and none of the aspens in the shot have a single Spring bud on them. There was a cold wind blowing, almost "like off the glacier", it snowed for a short time, mostly uber dry "corn snow", and temperatures dropped well into the 20's that night.
Hard to see, but in the distance is one of the "Spanish Sisters", peeking over the horizon.
Truly one of my favorite alpine ecosystems on the Planet.
Although the temperatures are still high outside, the falling of rain & leaves can only mean one thing - FALL is almost here, & I couldn't be happier! Something about the smell of burning leaves, the sound of them crunching under your feet, the taste of pumpkin, & the colors of autumn just makes me fall deeper in love with this season every year.
Temperatures in the far north are warming faster than anywhere else on the planet. This trend is having a profound effect in the frozen waters off the coast of Alaska. These days, sea ice forms later in the season and melts earlier. Recent measurements, in fact, indicate that ice coverage in the Arctic is at the lowest levels ever recorded.
With temperatures up in the mid thirties in the south of England yesterday, this Blue Tit was making the most of a juicy Blackberry meal.

Thanks to rising temperatures and a bit of rain this year's frog and toad migration has started. The populations are under immense pressure - mostly due to streets the animals have to cross to reach their breeding ponds and also due to intensive, industrial agriculture... heavy machinery condenses the ground and mangles animals, not to mention overfertilization and pesticides . We try to help the toads cross streets by building low tin foil fences by the roadside. Volunteers check the fences twice a day, pick up the waiting animals and carry them to the ponds they're headed to. The population at this location is dramatically decreasing and will soon be terminated if we're not in for some sort of miracle. When I collected the toads at the fence today I watched the local farmers on their machines on the fields around me. No amphibians migrating these fields had any chance for survival.
But every animal we carry is worth the effort, and a chance to delay extinction for yet another year.
As the temperatures soar, the birds have become active quite early in the morning and then they move closer to areas where there is some water. And water under canopy is preferred where the birds feel a bit more safe I suppose.
This bird was quite active on the banks of a small lake inside the city. It was busy grabbing insects and spiders off small plants. Both the male and female were seen, but I could get only the female shot.

Beware: Axis-HUD always in use
This is the third of four images I'm posting in sequence from a tremendous morning back in September. All are of the same scene, looking down from near the top of Mam Tor across the Hope Valley (Derbyshire, England) during a temperature inversion when a sea of fog was lapping against the hills. Sunrise was at 6:50, so they span the blue hour to the point at which the post-sunrise light started to get a little harsher.
If you get a touch of déjà vu, that's because you really have seen a couple of them before. One was on my stream for about 36 hours before I stupidly, and in total error, erased it... doh!...another I more recently deleted as I've decided I now want them all together and in order as a record of the transition. Not good etiquette to post-erase-repost, but there you go. I'll conquer my embarrassment, no doubt :-)

The temperature was hovering near the 10 degree mark and I still remember how my hands hurt from the cold. The sunset has occured and the blue hour has arrived, a westbound blows for a distant crossing and I set up for the shot. An ailing Conrail GP40-2 with a bad turbo, cycles smoke skyward as her train struggles to make time toward Toledo in the biting wind . . . Oak Harbor, Ohio on January 6, 1979.
Color change along the lower Hudson Valley has always been a bit later than the rest of the area. Warmer temperatures near the water keeps the leaves attached a couple of weeks longer. The evidence is plainly seen here as Conrail TVLA makes its ritual morning northward run at Tompkins Cove, NY rolling along some rather nice peak foliage with the past peak setting in a couple of hundred feet above the water level.
The temperature eventually got above zero! Following a week in the freezer the thaw descended and the sun melted the frost where it could touch. Another from the Beacon woods.

Temperatures here have taken a dip, with wind chills in the minus double digits. It feels something like this looks :-)
With temperatures in the 90's for the past 10 days and next week not looking any better tonights Throw Back Thursday needed some snow. Here is Wheeling 6314 taking a short train to Connellsville.
You know you wait for ages to see a temperature inversion and then see three in a matter of weeks.
This was taken in the Ogwen Valley in Snowdonia. I left the car at 05.05 and got to the top of the Devil's Kitchen at 05.45 which is some going. I then spent over 90 minutes looking for my phone which I realised I had dropped while somewhere between the Glyder Fawr scree and Llyn y Cwn - I didn't find it.
Anyway, misery turned to joy when I got to witness this sight.
This is a conservative or low Amish topless buggy clipping along in-2F temperatures. In this area there are two Amish settlements competing for souls and money. Conservative Amish don't allow tops on buggies which limits travel and marks a line of difference with the liberal Amish with their fancy warm buggies.... The conservative group is of southern Germany heritage and language. They have allowed fewer capitalist innovations involving technology and ways of making a living. The other group, after a schism, has embraced global capital flows of value and technology by relying on one of the big three Agricultural corporation to develop a vast system of feeder cattle factory farms. Large semi-open structures have been built to confine a large number of head in a small area (called a CAFO). (there are images of these structures in the Amish folder/album. These "liberal Amish" contract with the outside English people to house their cattle and to work for the Amish. Us "English" provide transportation and ability to use certain technologies that make these huge operations possible. Their wealth has swelled and they have put the money toward the building of large fancy homes that look like suburban houses. The low Amish require people to work on less capital intensive farms. They are not allowed to work in factories. They get by with labor intensive small scale agricultural practices and more humble or low in their consumption. Their homes are rag tag cobbled together structures that are "messy". The high Amish tear down old early 20th and late 19th Century homes to build fancy "McMansions". This leads to another plane of competition to "be in this world but not of this world" Being not of this world means being humble or plain. The liberal Amish think that the less technologically up to date Amish are being prideful and vain or showing off in trying to be "more Amish". The liberal or high churches wear brighter colorful clothes of pink or purple while the conservative churches wear black, dark blue or black. This visual boundary maintains a marriage and social barrier requiring endogamy. Flows of women and capital remain within each group ensuring wealth and social bonds remain within each group. There is a hot cold war between the two groups. The farm in the background is a large English family/corporate farm

A long ass work day, for the both of them, yet despite how she felt and what she had going on, she made his heart sing and his soul melt with the ways she made him laugh all day long, and the smile she insisted stay on his lips, no matter how defeated he felt.
It was never her focus, but he was never sure if she quite understood what she did to him, since day one. Because you see, she had this way... This growl-inducing, grin-bearing, chuckle-generating way of making him absolutely ravenous for her. It made him crazy! He wanted it all at once. To laugh with her, to listen to her day, to touch her and admire her while they filled in the holes that the day left each of them with, only satiated with the other.
But there is a moment... Where he can't take the frustrating struggle of his inability to do and give everything he feels for her at once. Eventually, one lust begins to supersede the others he has welling up inside. His soul begins to singe and his mind floods with images and sounds in fast-forward of the rest of their evening. But right now, he wants to pretend he has complete control over his desires. He'll play it cool as fuck, for now.

European tree frogs are small; males range from 32–43 mm (1.3–1.7 in) in length, and females range from 40–50 mm (1.6–2.0 in) in length. They are slender, with long legs. Their dorsal skin is smooth, while their ventral skin is granular. Their dorsal skin can be green, gray, or tan depending on the temperature, humidity, or their mood. Their ventral skin is a whitish color, and the dorsal and ventral skin is separated by a dark brown lateral stripe from the eyes to the groin. Females have white throats, while males have golden brown throats with large (folded) vocal sacs. The head of H. arborea is rounded, the lip drops strongly, the pupil has the shape of a horizontal ellipse, and the tympanum is clearly recognizable. The discs on the frog's toes, which it uses to climb trees and hedges, is a characteristic feature of H. arborea . Like other frogs, their hind legs are much larger and stronger than the fore legs, enabling the frogs to jump rapidly.
...but tomorrow it will rain! This is England after all! The temperature reached 36.7C (98F) - the hottest July day ever recorded in UK.

As far as temperatures and the general weather situation are concerned, autumn has returned today.
So after yesterday's spring fever, let's carefully approach reality.
However, so that the transition doesn't feel so violent, we'll start without fog, rain or snow for the time being.
Instead, we find ourselves on an October morning in the Königsbrück Heather and admire the sight of the autumn-colored red-gold ferns on the forest floor, lit up by the newly risen sun.
Was die Temperaturen und die allgemeine Wetterlage anbelangt ist der Herbst heute zurück gekehrt.
Also tasten wir uns nach den gestrigen Frühlingsgefühlen mal vorsichtig zurück heran an die Realität.
Damit sich jedoch der Übergang nicht so heftige anfühlt, beginnen wir vorerst ohne Nebel, Regen oder Schnee.
Stattdessen finden wir uns an einem Oktober Morgen in der Königsbrücker Heide und bewundern den Anblick der herbstlich gefärbten rot goldenen Farne am Waldboden, die von der gerade aufgegangenen Sonne zum Leuchten gebracht werden.
