I went to go see my grandfather for father's day.
I rarely ever heard him talk about WWII - he was nineteen over in Germany as a Medic. While he was aiding someone, a grenade had been thrown near him and took off a piece of his upper arm. He was fine and actually continued to aid his fellow soldier. He also helped people get away from the grenades that were being thrown and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal.
This is the telegram that was sent to his mother (my GREAT grandmother) when he was injured. This paper is almost 65 years old.
My grandfather also told me there was a lot of people who remained weren't awarded for their bravery - usually because their commanding officer was killed and there was no one to witness the act.
(Even though the composition isn’t that great - I thought this was a very memorable photo)
* Btw - I'm not pro war. I do support our troops, definately. I have had several friends serve over in Iraq. Also, I've had serveral family members serve in prior wars.

It was so cool to be on a Texas, hill side back road and stumble across this treasure! This is most likely and old telephone or telegram pole.

This is a telegram that was part of Edward Madden's collection. In it you see some famous names such has Guam and Iwo Jima. If anyone is able to "decode" this message, just post a comment! I can read most of it but understanding it is another story.
