In memory of Florence Billington 1898-1998, who died just before her 100th birthday.

This photo depicts the moment just before Florence was to find out that her sweetheart Ted Feltham had been killed at the 2nd Battle of Ypres 1915. Ted had lied about his age and wasnt even old enough to be fighting in the war.

For Coronation Year a regal Lion and a Unicorn to set the scene for the GPO's reminder that you could hand in Greetings Telegrams in advance of transmission (unlike by their very nature 'emergency' telegrams). Greetings Telegrams for festive occassions such as weddings and birthdays were hugely popular in the day and the GPO eventually cashed in with the introduction of specially deisgend Greetings Telegram forms and matching envelopes; some now being quite collectable.

The artist and designer here is the then well known F H K Henrion MBE FSIA. Henrion was another of the German born designers who came to the UK during the turbulent 1930s and here he stayed, despite being interned at the start of WW2. He went on to be one of the greatest designers and proponents of corporate identities as well as being an influential teacher. His company was one of the founding partners of Henrion Ludlow Schmidt, the design agency.

Delivered to your front door by a GPO dispatch rider on a motorbike. All too often, he had to deliver bad news. This 1957 BSA motorcycle in Post Office red livery is a reminder of that discontinued service at the Glasgow Riverside Museum.

Title:Zimmermann Telegram, 1917

From: Decimal File, 1910-1929, 862.20212/82A (1910-1929); General Records of the Department of State; Record Group 59; National Archives.

Production Date:January 19, 1917

This telegram, written by German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann and received by the German Ambassador to Mexico on January 19, 1917, is a coded message sent to Mexico, proposing a military alliance against the United States. The obvious threats to the United States contained in the telegram inflamed American public opinion against Germany and helped convince Congress to declare war against Germany in 1917.

The folds are specific, it's how they were classically folded for delivery. Yup, I did my research. :P
