Wii!
My video game lineage dates as far back as the original PONG machine. Simple yet engaging enough to keep us busy for hours.
The next step was the Atari 2600 - the original home gaming system. We started with the basic Tank game and then went from there. I remember having a TON of games - Pac Man (it sucked), River Raid, Pitfall, ET and that Raiders of the Lost Ark game which I still can't figure out.
We skipped the Atari 5200 and waited for the Nintendo Entertainment System to arrive. Again, lots of games. Aside from all the usual games, we were hooked on Tecmo Bowl. It was as simple as playing as Bo Jackson because he could not be stopped.
The Sega Genesis was the next system on tap for the household. Great graphics and modern looking games. Another sports game captured my fancy this time as it was World Series Baseball. Also loved playing Ecco the Dolphin among other games.
The Genesis ended up getting sold in order to pay for the Sony PlayStation. Was not a bad deal as it covered about 2/3 of the purchase price of the PS 1. The PS 1 was another step up as it introduced CD based games.
Somewhere along the way I picked up a Nintendo 64. Hooked me back into the great Mario games especially Mario Kart as well as Ken Griffey JR's Slugfest.
When the Sony Playstation 2 launched, the gaming landscape had changed. This was a hot ticket item released in time for the holiday shopping season. I did not get one at launch but my cousin Javi was on the prowl at Wal Mart and scored me one a month later. Plenty of games followed. I can remember spending many nights playing Tomb Raider 2 and Grand Theft Auto. A good system and it still remains in the household as my primary DVD player.
The XBOX 360 was a system I was not going to buy. I knew that the PS 3 and the next gen Nintendo would be released soon after. Once it was confirmed that the PS 3 was bring pushed back until the following year, I went ahead and pre-ordered. Again, this was a hot item so my "pre order" became a waiting game. I got it in late January and picked up a few games. But, I never really latched onto the system. Having a newborn in the house might have done something in that regards.
That leads us to passing on the PS 3... so far. I'm sure we'll get one at some point but it will be because of the Blu-Ray player and not the games.
Why? Simple - the Nintendo Wii. You all know what is. And, it's all true. It's an amazing system showing that the games and gameplay are the true stars. HD is nice but it's not the end all. Once you play Wii Sports, you are hooked. Add in the fact that anyone can get into the game quickly and it's a total winner.
