Global Technology Retreat 2024 in San Francisco, USA, 29 May 2024

West Coast Railways-liveried English Electric Type 3 37 706, stabled in the parcels sidings at York station. The locomotive had been hired, from Nemesis Rail, Burton-on-Trent, for route proving in the event of heavy snow. But, with the 2024-25 winter's first cold snap much less severe than expected, 37 706 did not turn a wheel in anger. When captured, the locomotive was waiting to depart as 0Z37, the 15.11 York (Parcels Sidings)-Burton (Wetmore Sidings).

Numbers carried previously by 37 706, outshopped in 1960 from English Electric's Vulcan Foundry, then allocated to Norwich TMD, are D6716 and 37 016. @10.34

Our local fire trucks were on display at the township park this Fourth of July. When my (21 year old) son and I showed up, either we looked like fire truck groupies, or the fireman was bored, because he suggested I take a pic of the dials and instrument, and turned on the lights for me. He then had my son climb up in the driver's seat and showed him all the instruments (took about 10 minutes).

Now if only I had gotten to climb in too and run the siren . . . sigh.

Collaboration & The Workplace of the Future

September 29–30, 2015

Washington, D.C.

The workplace is changing, and it’s not just a matter of taking down the cubicle partitions and putting in couches. Clouds, social networks, mobile devices and their apps, sensors, and service-oriented architectures are changing not just the ways we compute, but the ways we collaborate—human-to-human, human-to-machine, and machine- to-machine. We’ll particularly look at the tools of collaboration—the physical and social networks, and some new interfaces between us and our devices and between us and all our data—and how the sourcing and management of talent is shifting from ownership to empowerment, hierarchies to networks, and individual efforts to collaborations.
