April Jewell, a GSAS chemistry doctoral student, received the Young Scientist Prize at the 10th International Conference on the Structure of Surfaces (ICSOS-10) in August 2011. The conference—which was held in Hong Kong, China, and takes place every three years—is an opportunity for graduate students and leading researchers in areas such as atomic positions; bond lengths and bond angles of clean and adsorbate surfaces; and interfaces and nanostructures to present their research and discuss the future of their disciplines.

Considering the technological evolution rather than devolution in music Neil Young, has decided to create a device which would offer high quality digital music to the listener. In the Hawaiian language, Pono means righteous. This name was chosen to imply that the device offers the right sound, a sound very similar to the mastering in its original resolution. PonoMusic files carry approximately 6 times more musical information than a typical mp3 file. With ultra-high quality resolution recordings (24 bit/192kHz), the difference between a PonoMusic digital and an mp3 file results in about 30 times more digital information from which a player will be able to reconstruct the “song”. Pono’s promises nevertheless raise serious skepticism.

Its ecosystem is consisted of a portable music player ($399), the PonoMusic online music store and the “PonoMusic App”.

To raise money for Pono’s project, Neil Young has chosen the path of crowd funding. The campaign he ran on Kickstarter brought him $6.2m and became the third most successful Kickstarter ever.

Other future trends are:

•Do- it- yourself studio tech: ultra-portable studios, tablet turntables, pro-level portable mics, pro DJ controllers and mini-music makers.

•Music App Development: Hyperlocalism

•Wearable tech: in-ear jukebox

Some technological barriers in information distribution had not yet been breached. While text could be transcribed easily, newspapers could not yet convert pictures like Mathew Brady's photographs or Bensell's sketch of the New Ironsides directly into printable images. Still, the public wanted to see images of the war and its personalities; and newspapers like Harper's Weekly, Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, and the Southern Illustrated News worked to meet this desire [1 12-13]. These papers employed engraving artists, who carved reproductions of photographs and sketches into wood blocks to make printing plates. Later in the war, copperplate engraving allowed engravers greater precision [1 11, 13].

Above, General Burnside and his staff appear in a Harper's Weekly illustration. The wood-engraver based this picture on a photograph by Brady (or one of his associates, who worked under Brady's name) [3].
