Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,

Trash it, change it, melt - upgrade it,

Charge it, pawn it, zoom it, press it,

Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,

Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,

Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,

Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it,

Drag and drop it, zip - unzip it,

Lock it, fill it, curl it, find it,

Guilherme Marcondes makes electrifying films and animations inspired by the built environment.

His multi-dimensional work seeks to understand how people project their consciousness into their surroundings, especially urban ones, and how these surroundings have an impact upon human behavior, thoughts, dreams and nightmares. Marcondes weaves traditional animation techniques, life-sized puppets and beautiful technological effects into intricate and psychologically intriguing worlds. His work address a core question in science, technology and society studies: what is it like for us, both individually and collectively, to live in a technological world?

At MIT, Marcondes expanded his work into the terrain of video games in a workshop to develop and prototype spatial narratives. His visit provided an opportunity for writers, producers and programmers to work together on simulating a future environment. During a public program at the MIT Museum Marcondes presented a selection of his animations and the results of his workshops at MIT.

Guilherme Marcondes’s residency is presented by the Visiting Artists Program, the MIT Game Lab and the MIT Program in Science, Technology and Society.

The National STEM Guitar Project, in partnership with NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Centers with funding provided through a grant from The National Science Foundation (#1304405), hosts innovative Guitar Building Institutes around the United States. The 5-day institutes, combined with additional instructional activities comprising 80 hours, provide faculty training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school, and post-secondary faculty. The institutes present and teach participants hands-on, applied learning techniques to help engage students and spark excitement for learning STEM subject matter.

Nationwide, there are increasing concerns from businesses about the supply of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics trained workers. Science and math test scores in the U.S. are among the lowest around the world.

The goal and objective of the STEM Guitar Building Institutes is to showcase a new way to present learning for students with applied methods.

ERNESTO OROZA [US] - Technological Disobedience

"Special Period in Times of Peace" was how the Cuban government termed the country’s crisis in 1990.

The country’s centralized economy imploded at its inner core: the home. The family became an autonomous economic unit. Workers, musicians, physicians, athletes – all had to confront the severe scarcity of resources with creativity and cooperation. Objects apparently useless were torn apart for repair, reuse, and recycling, and the technical knowledge thereby obtained was socialized among friends and neighbours. In many cases, reinvented objects were self-explanatory, and their technological process of production easily replicated.

This habit of accumulation separated the industrial object from the life cycle assigned to it by its respective industry, thus postponing the moment of its disposal, inserting it into a new timeline. This act of resistance reorganized the Cuban production phenomena, which Oroza has termed "Technological Disobedience," inscribing it in its own time frame with its own rhythm.

"Technological Disobedience (tactical interior design)" is produced in response to this specific exhibit. A run of 1000 tabloids are used as wallpaper to designate particular spaces within the exhibition site. The rest of the newspapers are available to be taken by audience members and present texts that, in some way, expand the conceptual scope of the exhibit. 200 standard format (6 x 4) photos, from the archive "Technological Disobedience" cover the wallpaper, and two altered mono-bloc plastic chairs complete the setup.
