His name was leaked by the PMO to the very authorities against whom he had complained. The Bihar Govem~ent made no arrests-it simply passed on the buck to the CBII Now, in the slanging match between theNHAl-PMO versus Bihar Government, they have successfully hidden the issue ofconuption behind verbiage ag~teach other. Meanwhile, the CBI has given out that the equivalent ofa pickpocket gunned down Dubey to rob him! An elaborate cover up has killed another engineer and two others. A witness has disappear~d. The cover up is complete! Satyendra Dubey dare4 to defy the common image ofa corrupt government engineer. He thus got entangled in the nexus of corrupt contractors~ruling politicians and bureaucracy. He is not alone: In the past two years, six engineers have been murdered for showing similar courage in Uttar Pradesh (UP), all IIT or REC graduates, employed in govern-ment projects. They had exposed the contractors before various ministers in UP. For all those killed, many other engi-neers in UP have stepped f01ward to tell about threats to their lives for exposing corruption! That they turned their backs on employment opportunities abroad which open wide before IITians and othersin top professional colleges and chose to remain in India T~atthey took up governmentjobs, bur refused to succumb to the system. That in their burning idealism, they were naive enough to not realize that the corrupt contractors are but one cog in the, wheel. The nexus extends to the ruling politicians and bureaucracy, and it cannot sustain without being so. In the case ofthe Golden Quadrilateral project, it is also widely hinted that the actual contractors are foreign companies who walk offwith the major share ofprofits and leave the local contractors to make their pie.
