The queen of hearts, she made some tarts....

Creamy golden lemon curd in toasty tart shells. Topped with a fresh Ontario strawberry - can it get any fresher than this?

Can it be that we've finally arrived at the first pastry shop ever to sell the famous Portuguese-style egg tart outside of Jeronimos Monastery where it was created before the 18th Century by Catholic nuns? There were crazy long lines, but it went by pretty quickly and reminded us of the Magnolia Bakery madness back in New Yawk. We've been trying other 葡撻s, but this was supposingly the best.

The custard tarts come with 2 containers...one filled with confectioner's sugar...and the other with cinnamon. The multi-layered crust was crispy, flakey and cradled the creamy warm center perfectly. I think I could've finished half a dozen by myself. Haha!!!

i made these tarts early last month because i wanted to use up the apples and the tart dough that i made a very very long time ago. i didn't manage to use up the tart dough but the apples i did. my mother was actually complaining that my tarts were so small (4 inches) and i had made only 2 (even though not many people eat such stuff in my household). but i only had 2 tart pans that i bought from daiso and i thought it was a good number because i didn't want leftovers to be in the fridge. again. i made everything from scratch, apple sauce, tart dough.

the lighting was crappy because it was late afternoon and the spot that i used had sunlight coming in directly from the window and casting rather harsh shadows and causing the apples on the tart to look overexposed. i also don't quite like the light quality of the evening sun which tends to be a bit yellow. the ones of the apple sauce was taken earlier in the day so they looked better IMO.

in the end i covered my window with my pattern making paper so that it wouldn't have such harsh lighting though that made it quite dark too. oh wells...

something sweet for weekend.

This started life as a French-style apple tart, until I decided to sweeten the base with caramel and spice it pretty heavily with the kinds of warm spices I use when I make masala chai (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, black pepper, cardamom, star anise, and vanilla.) Rather than finish it off with an apricot jam glaze, I made up a Grand Marnier caramel sauce and used that instead.

I wasn't really following a recipe, but the crust is a basic sweetened pie dough, the filling is a mix of chopped Cortland and Gala sautéed in a simple caramel with the aforementioned spices, the decorative slices are Golden Delicious tossed in a bit more of the spices and some lemon juice, and the glaze is a simple caramel made with sugar, Grand Marnier, and a little water.

I couldn't help but grabbed 6 lemons when I saw them on the supermarket cart. They are so fresh and are much larger than the usual ones I bought. It was such a good deal, I got them at 35 cents each :D

I tried my hand at making a lemon meringue tart...it is my very first attempt and I have never even tasted one before ;')

I don't have any eclipse glasses, but I used the foil covering some Pop Tarts to view it. Folded once. Note the EXIF time is off by 2 hours and 7 minutes. It was taken on August 21st 2017 at 10:15 AM Pacific time in Modesto, California.

If you try it yourself, be sure not to look for more than a few moments. It's good enough for a brief look, but no guarantee for eye safety.

It was a buffet dinner.

I started my meal with some cold cuts. Followed by spaghetti, sweet and spicy prawns and beef topped with variety of mushrooms.. I then had some fruit tart and cakes as the desserts. And lastly end up the meal with a cup of coffee.

Chocolate tarts!

I always make the crust before and bake it, then fill it.

Now those 5 were lying around for a few months, I forgot about them and found them while re-organizing my studio (ahem...).

So I made 5 chocolate tarts variations :)

Loved these portuguese custard tarts. Found some in Tesco. A tasty reminder of my holiday.
