Target practice.

A relic of the past ends its useful life as fodder for target practice.

Okay, so the sign has been a target for probably some time now. It appeared to have been abused by an automatic weapon or some such beast. Rock Island Grade, E. Washington Mar 13 13 6538

The remains of a WW2 Churchill tank at a location known as Kithurst Hill, nearby to the South Downs Way. The nearest villages/towns would be Storrington and Findon.

At the end of WW2, this particular tank had apparently developed a mechanical problem and - since it had already been superseded by later models - it was considered 'uneconomical to repair' and was handed over for target practice.

Once it had fulfilled this role (and it fulfilled it well, because the far side of the shell is literally peppered with holes!), it was somehow rolled to a nearby bomb crater and buried in it.

In more recent times, the tank was excavated (by the army) and certain parts including the turret were removed for preservation and use by the The Tank Museum (formerly The Bovington Tank Museum) in Dorset.

The surviving parts of the shell have been left above ground, as can be seen here.

On New Year's Eve we went down to the family hunting cabin to do some target practice with friends. Mr Chiots wants to do this every month so he's ready for deer season this year. He's hoping to have 3 deer in the freezer after 2010 hunting season.

We seem to have developed a family Christmas tradition of target practice. Everyone gets involved. Here, my brother takes a shot at a milk jug filled with water. Take home message? Be careful where you aim!

I took my oldest child, and only daughter, to the shooting range today. She did well, and learned quickly. I think the time in our back yard, with the BB gun has really helped ease her into it. The ideas of breathing slowly, sight picture, and some of the basics of firearm safety had already been learned. So, she was ready to do well today.

Linlin fires a Ruger SR-22 at some paper at a makeshift range near Matt's cottage.

the SR-22 is semiautomatic and fires .22-cal Long Rifle rounds. Matt's has a collapsible stock, barrel shroud, flash hider, and red dot sight. it was fairly easy to learn how to use, and I was very impressed with its accuracy.

Sad way to treat this marker that was probably there when the original US 6 was built way before I-70 passed through.

Backside of "Albuquerque on the Camino Real... Elevation 5,310" Historical Marker on Nine Mile Hill on Albuquerque, New Mexico's West Mesa, at the western edge of town.

—Given the late high incidence of and recent political controversies over gun violence in Bernalillo County, it's curiously

thematic this sign is so shot up.

Here's what the front side says:

"OFFICIAL SCENIC HISTORIC MARKER

"Spanish settlers had lived here before the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, but the area was resettled when the "Villa de Albuquerque" was founded in 1706. In addition to promoting colonization, the new town was intended to provide protection from attacks by Indians in Rio Abajo, or lower Rio Grande Valley."

"Nine Mile Hill," so-called for being maybe nine miles west of and above downtown 'Burque, is covered in enough discarded bottles and clothing to demonstrate its popularity since forever as a late-night hangout for drink, highs, and views. —Also said to be a regular dump-site for local street folk after being roughed up by APD (Albuquerque Police).

There are thousands of these concrete blocks all over the East Coast of Scotland, to deter an invasion from the sea. These traps were the anchor point for the two submarines.
