I'LL GET TO SYMBOLS LATER, FOR NOW THE TOPIC IS WORDS & WHAT THEY IMPLY: The great Japanese punk band Shonen Knife once recorded a cover version of the Carpenters' big hit "On Top Of The World," but when they sang the line with the title in it, it came out sounding like "Uh-oni-tapa da worrl". Now imagine, if you will, your humble photographer driving to work at 5:45 a.m. (this was the mid-1990s) and this coming on the radio. You might understand why the first time I heard it, I thought what Shonen Knife was singing was, "I wanna tapa the world." Mind you, I was possibly still more asleep than awake, but I thought, wow, if a Japanese punk band is singing about tapa-ing the world, then Polynesian consciousness has truly arrived on the global scene. Turns out that notion was quite a few years ahead of its time, BUT it wasn't entirely without precedent - after all, back in the '70s the very eccentric (American) band Sparks came up with the great album title "Kimono My House". The idea is to put your own cultural stamp on things, even if it's just on yourself.

(SO WHAT RADIO STATION IN SAMOA WOULD EVER PLAY SHONEN KNIFE???) Good point. Answer: none. It happened in Hawaii, during the brief but glorious lifetime of Radio Free Hawaii. Radio Free What? Radio Free Hawaii. For about two years, maybe less and definitely not more, such a thing really did exist, hard as that may seem to believe. Google it. It's too long and complicated a story for me to tell here. But it's a great story about someone who stuck his neck out big time on behalf of all the music that never gets played on commercial radio, and ended up paying dearly for such an idealistic undertaking, but nevertheless got a lot of great music through the door before the door once again slammed shut.

Some bars in the north of Spain offer a small ration of food "tapas" along with drinks, without extra cost. I guess it is a way to offer that "added value" which is getting more common and common this days, effectively differentiating themselves from the abundant competence.

Beware, not all the cities from Spain offer them priceless, so when doubting ask the waiter or look at others customers' tables... as some tapas can be very expensive.
