"No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes..." The Lyrics to King of the Road come to mind when thinking of Tangier. On an island with a year-round population of about 500, it's a laid back and tranquil pace of life with a unique dialect.

Tangier Rappahannock Cruises whisked us from Buzzard Point Marina to Tangier Island late in the morning of May 14, 2016. We rented a golf cart to get around the island since there are no vehicles. I used a Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 to track points along the route as best I could.

An view of Tangier Island from the air. This year helicopter rides were offered as part of our Homecoming celebration. Noah, his friend Troy, and I all went up at 6:45. Shots from the other side of the island didn't turn out because of strong light from a low sun and glare. I like this one because it has the water tower, an iconic symbol of Tangier.

The tour guide.

Trip to Tangier Island on August 20, 2007. You get to this island by ferry (the Chesapeake Breeze) and it makes for a nice day. The big industry on the island is crabbing and fishing.

Tangier has been reputed as a safe house for international spying activities. Its position during the Cold War and during other spying periods of the 19th and 20th centuries is legendary.

Tangier acquired the reputation of a spying and smuggling centre and attracted foreign capital due to political neutrality and commercial liberty at that time. It was via a British bank in Tangier that the Bank of England in 1943 for the first time obtained samples of the high-quality forged British currency produced by the Nazis in "Operation Bernhard".

The city has also been a subject for many spy fiction books and films.
