TANGIBLE INTERACTION
STRAIGHTLEG
I was lucky to get this shot (not what I was after) last night. There were thousands of birds on these lines.. I pulled over, grabbed my gear, and shut my truck door as soft as I could.. That was enough to start sending them south. I snapped this shot off, while I could, and really didn't put a whole lot of stock in it. By the time I got the tripod setup, (more noise) there were two birds left. I just laughed, smiled, took the two-bird-shot, packed up and continued on..

Value(s) for Money? Philanthropy as a Catalyst for Social Change (March 6-9, 2014)
Increasing social and environmental challenges, writ globally, are raising the stakes for philanthropy to find "solutions". The deeply complex nature of these challenges, however, defies easy fixes and requires more sophisticated and diffuse systems level approaches. Is the philanthropic sector ready, or capable of meeting critical systemic challenges? Probably not, as seen through the lens of Michael Edwards in a recent think piece entitled 'Beauty and the Beast: Can Money Ever Foster Social Transformation?'.
Innovative funding mechanisms that support social change - like crowd-funding, social impact bonds, payments for eco-system services and prize-backed challenges - have diversified the funding landscape and brought in new resources. The system, however, is arguably out of balance with too much focus placed on revenue-generation, and directing financial resources, through the market. At the same time, less funding is available for the deeper, less tangible drivers of social change - change that is driven by the beneficiaries themselves and is inherently more democratic. Money, while a seemingly essential tool in change processes, can be a "curse", reinforcing or exacerbating the very circumstances and power imbalances at the heart of systemic social challenges.
The objective of this program, in partnership with Hivos, is to shape a new narrative on funding for deep social change that can influence current and future funding trends and global policies.

Tangible Intangibilities
(Project 4-Design 2 UNT)
Balsa wood mania! This project was really interesting and I got super sucked into it. From the beginning I was a little worried about if I could actually finish the project by the time given. Basically I worked on the project anytime I had night and day between work and school. I started with a pile of balsa wood and in one class seating glue every single piece I had even the tiny ones. Once I had this strange looking block of twenty something pieces of all shapes and sizes of balsa wood. I dug in with my X-acto knife and box cutter. Then I shaved away at this block throughout the whole weekend giving me leftover mounds of wood chips. Oh, boy was my room a mess I had to clean it twice that week. Just when I thought the going got tough. Then came the sanding part, which I was surprised took some time to smooth out all the rough edges. Once the form was smooth and complete I primed it with an off white. Then I had this bright idea to want to make it glow-in-the-dark, so I added a couple coats of the glow paint on top of the primer. Some of my original thoughts were to have everything intertwining or playing off each other. When I painted the sculpture I had the color wrap around the forms in ways that they would reconnect on the other side. The magical word that the sculpture represented was “Passionate”. I used reds, oranges, and blues to convey the word. Now the glow-in-the-dark part was cool I decided on doing strips that raced up the center of the piece to the tip with a few other part that glowed. In the end it turned out like I envisioned plus I highly enjoyed creating it so to me it was a complete success.
