A colorful picture book of a film. I'm no fan of opera, really, but this filmed version features some crazy sequences, in-camera special effects, Dr. Seussian set design, and amazing actors, including the scary looking Robert Helpmann (whose bio is equally nutty). On the Criterion disc, George Romero talks about how it's his favorite film. At one point there was on 16mm print to rent in NYC and he was one of two teens renting it. The other excitable kid? Martin Scorcese.
First photo of myself without the camera in the middle :)
