Russian architecture has been predominantly religious. Churches were for centuries the only buildings to be constructed of stone, and today they are almost the only buildings that remain from its ancient past. The basic elements of Russian church design emerged fairly early, around the eleventh century. The plan is generally that of a Greek cross (all four arms are equal), and the walls are high and relatively free of openings. Sharply-sloped roofs (tent roofs) and a multitude of domes cover the structure. The characteristic onion dome first appeared in Novgorod on the Cathedral of Sancta Sophia, in the eleventh century. On the interior, the primary feature is the iconostasis, an altar screen on which the church's icons are mounted in a hierarchical fashion.

The centers of medieval church architecture followed the shifting dominance of old Russia's cities--from Kiev to Novgorod and Pskov, and, from the end of the 15th century, Moscow.

Sakura matsuri

さまざまのこと思い出す桜かな

Samazama no koto omoidasu sakura ka na

(Is it a cherry blossom that reminds me of various things?)

- Bashô Matsuo

In Japan, in late March and early April, they celebrate the Sakura matsuri, or cherry blossom festival.

All eyes will be on the light pink florets as they fill the city sidewalks, public parks, and temple gardens with quivering bursts of color in the gentle breeze of early spring. Picnicking under the blossoms is an ancient tradition. Then, all too soon, the petals begin to fall, and the scene becomes a distant memory.

One explanation of Bashô’s haiku is that he is recalling that he abandoned the way of samurai and decided to live the way of haiku. Or simply that cherry blossoms encourage random thoughts.

The sibilant repetition of the “s” and “z” sounds (samazama, omoidasu, sakura). The repeated consonants of “k” (koto, sakura, kana) produce a melodic sound to Bashô’s phrase.

“Do you remember many things?” is today’s colloquial understanding of the phrase.

A more literal translation is, “Various things, they call to mind, ah, cherry blossoms !”

I live in a fairy tale, that's for sure. I've been working like mad this past few weeks. With christmas season at work, I'm doing more book commercials than I care to mention. I've had no time what-so-ever to take pictures, but when I leave for work & come home from work, something like this greets me just right outside my apartment, every day. How can you NOT take a picture? Thankfully I've been keeping my camera gear with me at all times since I downsized from a big backpack to a medium shoulderbag, with fewer lighter lenses, so with the 1 1/2 minute I have while walking from the car to my apartment, I'm ready for something like this.

PS. Little to no post-processing, and no filters!

Oh what stories they would have. A Humpback whale submerges after lunge feeding off the Antarctic coast. Their annual summer pilgrimage is driven by the availability of the largest biomass of animals in the world.......krill.

The 21st Century Fairy Tale Inspired by Cinderella

The Long Corridor is a covered walkway in the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. The total length of the Long Corridor is 728 metres and it is decorated with more than 14,000 paintings, especially on the ceiling and its beams, which divide it into 273 sections. Along the corridor there are four octagonal pavilions. Each of these pavilions symbolises the four climatic seasons of the year. The more than 14,000 paintings have a wide variety of subjects: historical figures, famous buildings, landscapes, flowers, birds, fish, insects... Of particular importance are those depicting folk and traditional tales, fables and episodes from classical Chinese literature. As a part of the Summer Palace, the Long Corridor was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December, 1998.

There is no doubt that the Long Corridor is a beautiful place during the day. But it is at night, with the arrival of darkness and the lighting of the chinese lanterns, that it reaches its true splendour, creating a special atmosphere and transforming into a long, luminous and sinuous thread in the midst of the darkness. It is at night when it becomes a magical place, where stories, tales, fables, imagination... come to life and arise. Dreams and tales, in the middle of the night and darkness.

Tranquiliza tu mente. Descansa tus ojos y duerme bien.

Goodnight.

Goa, India

Goa is India's smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population. Located on the west coast of India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast.

Panaji is the state's capital, while Vasco da Gama is the largest city. The historic city of Margao still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese, who first landed in the early 16th century as merchants, and conquered it soon thereafter. The Portuguese overseas territory existed for about 550 years, until it was annexed by India in 1961.

There’s something undeniably enchanting about stepping away from the predictable red roses and heart-shaped clichés of Valentine’s Day and embracing an elegant, ethereal white-themed celebration instead.

A secluded dock stretching over a tranquil pond, draped in cascading white wisteria gently swaying in an afternoon breeze. At its centre, the beautiful rustic natural wood dining table from CHEZ MOI, Gracie Dining Table, adorned with a simple vase of freshly picked wisteria blossoms, setting the scene for an intimate dinner.

Perfect for after dinner or dessert, the inviting Jessa bed set from BAZAR rests beneath a stunning lit white tent—a dreamy retreat where pages turn as effortlessly as the evening breeze.

Whether sharing favorite passages, getting lost in a beloved novel, or simply enjoying the quiet companionship of books and each other, this serene escape makes for a Valentine’s Day far more poetic than any bouquet of roses could ever offer.

I was exploring back roads in this area of Washington State looking for interesting buildings or anything old to photograph when I came across this scene. I walked down the road for a little ways but the lone cow in the field didn't seem to want me there so I went back. Turning around I stood there looking at the meandering road as it went through the meadow and forest before going up the hill. Eventually it occurred to to me that if I waited long enough I might see a tin man and a cowardly lion.
