I witnessed sunset last night from this vantage point in Haleakala National Park. It was... fantastic. I thought about waiting another day to see this park, since I was running on only a tiny amount of sleep yesterday and had just arrived to the island (and it takes about two hours to drive to this place)... but, well, curiosity won out. So I spent almost four hours of driving to stand for twenty minutes in this spot. Totally. Worth it.
And then, on about five hours of sleep from last night, I woke up at 3am to make the drive up to this vantage point for sunrise. After that, I spent nine hours hiking down into the valley and around cinder cones and then back up an amazing set of switchbacks that were covered in mist and lush vegetation. It was such a crazy variety of climates in one hike.
Tomorrow will be my third day here, and I've yet to step foot on a beach or even eat local food (hiking=pb&j and granola bars). I guess you can see what my priorities are. Nothing says "vacation" more to me than grueling days out on new and exciting trails. :-)

Taken on my walk on Thursday near the bridge over the river as you approach Ribchester from Blackburn.I decided to leave it with just a few tweaks of the raw file as it’s beauty speaks for itself. Taken with a canon 450D and canon 10-22mm lens at 22 mm and a 20sec exposure using a 10 stop nd filter.
