Alpine Salamander (Salamandra atra) - Tyrolean Alps, Austria
A salamander walking high up in the Austrian Alps. Of all herps (except Caecilians) salamanders are probably the most reclusive so it can be tough to find them moving about in the open. However as we got underway and began our trek in the early morning, turns out we weren't the only ones who decided to make a trek in the morning. Before long I came across a salamander crawling in the grass, I assumed it was an anomaly but 15 min later I came across this one, also moving about during the daytime. It had rained a fair amount the night before and I suspect the salamanders were active and just hadn't had time to find refuge since daybreak and that they were crawling towards shelter, underneath any of the stones or in one of the marmot burrows that abounded on the hills.
With two nests nearby, this adult green heron was no doubt taking a break from either egg sitting or foraging for hungry little mouths.
Taken at Ding Darling NWR.
Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to view, like or comment on my photos!

Really interesting to look at how these guys go about taking off from swimming. They pretty much thrust themselves just out of the water with their wings, then creating momentum by basically jumping on the surface while flapping to speed up. Fascinating!
I do not recall taking this shot. Photos taken after this early morning hare encounter I remember but this has been erased from my memory. Good job I took a photo!
Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders: lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells. Wing shape is maintained by the suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing, and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside.
Despite not using an engine, paragliders flight can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, though flights of one to two hours and covering some tens of kilometers are more the norm. By skillful exploitation of sources of lift, the pilot may gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand meters.
This paraglider started near the old castle of Kallmünz, a picturesque village located at the confluence of Naab and Vils in the Upper Palatinate.

I stood on top of my vehicle to snap this landscape taken in downtown Crestone, Colorado. As I was climbing back down after taking this shot the sheriff drove by me slowly, looking at me suspiciously.
I spent the day in Crestone, Colorado enjoying the autumn colors, the mountain views, and the company of some wonderful denizens of Crestone.

My first attempt of shooting a video and uploading it to Flickr. As long as it took, I doubt if I do this very often! It is a little shaky, but I hope you still enjoy viewing it. It's fun to watch the hummers take turns at taking their morning baths in our small waterfall in our back yard.
A busy day, I'll be back as soon as I can to visit your photos! Have a great day!
