Taking a Stroll
Alpine Salamander (Salamandra atra) - Tyrolean Alps, Austria
A salamander walking high up in the Austrian Alps. Of all herps (except Caecilians) salamanders are probably the most reclusive so it can be tough to find them moving about in the open. However as we got underway and began our trek in the early morning, turns out we weren't the only ones who decided to make a trek in the morning. Before long I came across a salamander crawling in the grass, I assumed it was an anomaly but 15 min later I came across this one, also moving about during the daytime. It had rained a fair amount the night before and I suspect the salamanders were active and just hadn't had time to find refuge since daybreak and that they were crawling towards shelter, underneath any of the stones or in one of the marmot burrows that abounded on the hills.
