"Will Tahu find the humility and patience to earn deeper knowledge of fire and learn that not everything can be taken by force?"

Fourth creature of the series to make the G2 creatures into large and powerful elemental masters. Ikir came to completion in one day after I began tinkering with his head design. It's a good feeling when a moc comes together straightforwardly.

As usual, I recycled the head, but gave the creature different eyes from the rest. Boat studs made for great bird eyes in this case.

With Ikir, I thought that Tahu's challenge is basically the fact that he can't reach the flying bird. Assuming Tahu is fairly hot tempered, his trial is to learn that he can't simply force and take everything he wants. Instead, with Ikir, he must learn to earn, wait, give and compromise until he finds the connection he needs with Ikir.

The beginning of spring in Oklahoma has proven to have cold mornings. Tahu, out of all of the Toa, dislikes the cold the most. He sought shelter this morning near a candle in our spare room. Though I'm not quite sure why he held his sword so close to the flame, and I didn't ask, I can guess that he enjoyed the reflection of the candle flame upon his fiery weapon.

On our trip down south, February 24, 2018. We stopped at Shag Point/Matakaea as I had never been there before. Matakaea is the name of the pa (fortified village). We have left Dunedin and going to stay in Timaru for a night before heading back to Christchurch.

Shag Point/Matakaea has a rich history, from early Ngai Tahu settlement to historic coalmining. The area has diverse marine life. It has interesting flora, is great for wildlife viewing, and is geologically fascinating.

Flat rock platforms provide an easy haul-out site for New Zealand fur seals, and cliff-top viewing areas allow you to observe seal behaviour without disturbing their rest.

Whalers discovered the first bituminous coal in New Zealand here in the 1830s. By 1862 the exposed coal seams were found to be commercially viable and were successfully mined until 1972, when flooding eventually closed shafts that extended under the coast. Evidence of coal mining is still obvious throughout the reserve.

Matakaea is jointly managed by DOC and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. Matakaea has Topuni status. The mana (authority) and rangatiratanga (chieftainship) of Ngai Tahu over the area is recognised publicly by this status. Ngai Tahu takes an active role in managing the natural and cultural values of the area.

Some people say that 70787 is a bad set and Kopaka is much better. Well, I bought new Tahu, brought him home, took his parts and ... build something you can see on the photo. At the beginning I wasn't sure if I made good decision buying him but now I am convinced that he's a good set. Not perfect, but good. He has some disadvantages like shoulders or golden armour (I prefer rather silver) but he has nice parts too. And yeah, building my improved version was a really pleasure for me (that's a little sarcastic that at last I could use golden parts from another sets).

Anyway, I started with original model improving him successively. In my opinion final result is ok. Limb-movement is little worse than in 70787 but that's fine - this is because he has more armour. Under the cover there is a original gear-system which still works. You can rotate his wings but you can't take them out and form a sword (in my earlier project this sword was too short so I resigned from this idea) - instead of this I extended his main swords.

Another thing I'm proud are legs. In original you have empty backs. In my version everything is armoured and looking more realistic (I hope so anyway).

The only thing I used from another flickR user are hands from MrBoltTron who has a great patent for hands with mobile fingers. I don't mind about original hands but if there is possible to do something better - why don't we do it? And yeah, he can hold his swords :)

Another revamp of one of the original six Toa. This one is Tahu. I know people don't like the bohrok feet elbows, but there's something about them I really, really like.

Since these are more sketch-MOCs, quick builds instead of super serious models, I feel pretty okay with that. Same with the grey. Unfortunately, the parts on the abdomen only come in grey or black, but the parts holding those only come in grey. So I had to work grey into the colour scheme, so think of it as the mechanical detail underlying the entire character.

The legs are nearly wholesale taken from Lewa. We'll say it is for consistency between the three models.

I debated the mixed flame sword piece instead of the solid one, but in the end I liked this one better on this model.

I'm mainly a minifigure fan but I'll always have a soft spot for the classic Bionicle line from 2001.

One day I felt like reassembling Tahu, but then I realized his old design didn't age that well... his right arm morphed into a sword for some reason, and his left "hand" looked like a plug. He also had no working elbows or knees, even though the old marketing material did a good job making it look like they did.

So I decided to make my own design, fully articulated and posable.

I think it's cool that Lego more or less standardized their character building system, but I didn't think it would work well here. Even though CCBS nailed the structure, most characters end up looking too bulky for my taste, with all those armor plates and all that. A "classic" Toa would need a "Technic" feel, not a modern one.

More pictures in my album.

Tahu Nuva's adaptive armor; as it appears in default mode.

If I was any good with photoshop I'd try putting this pose in a lava surfing background.

My friend CaptainPaw and I where bored with the cheap "combination" model of the two, and decided to make our own!

Tahu, pro surfer and Toa of Fire, is ready to win the Mata Nui surfing championships.

Made for Bio-Cup 2021.

This MOC is supposed to represent Tahu in his Toa Mata form, though he is now just a pro surfer. he is about the same height as a Toa mata, and he has a similer colour scheme as well.

And just like that, the toa mata series is done. When building Tahu, I wanted him to be like a culmination of all the things I learned along the way while building the other toa, considering things like proportion, color blocking, articulation, greebling, creative parts usage, and callbacks to the original set.

This was originally built nearly nine years ago. It got mostly scrapped at one point, but I felt the need to put it back together with some revisions. I've always had a soft spot for the 'ol Toa of Fire.

As the other 5 Toa struggled against the Bohrok, Tahu faced Tahnok Kal alone. After an amazing battle, Tahu finally bested the beast and Tahnok Kal conceded. All of the Bohrok were taken away intact except for Gahlok who left Kopaka no other choice but to destroy it. Lewa is on his way to a full recovery and Tahu walked away from the battle with nothing more than a scorched mask. I was surprised when I saw that his mask had been burnt. Tahu claims that Tahnok, somehow, scorched his face with it's shield weapon. I know that these guys are plastic and that this shouldn't be possible, but now I wonder...is there more to the Bionicles than I thought.

Never settle until it's your best.

My Tahu Mata Revamp: Reduxed!

The legendary Toa of Fire in his Toa Mata form. An approximation of how he would have looked on Spherus Magna and depicted in Matoran legend.

I made a minor cosmetic edit to his upper torso by adding a new piece that fits his aesthetic better.

Not the greatest, but I think it's the closest you can get without completely redesigning everything on a larger scale.

Quick MOC, long render. This took 1 day, 17 hours, 47 minutes and 43 seconds to render because of the six light sources, the reflective surfaces and the high settings. Check the full size render.

Rest in Pieces

I'm contemplating remaking the Bionnicle movie...

The main man. Of the 6 revamps, Tahu was and is my favorite. I aimed to make sure that only Gen1 parts were used to make sure he had that pistony, just-arrived-on-mata-nui feel. For me, this is Tahu’s definitive version.

Here's where the back gear would connect, if it all moved like the original.

Inspired by Gali's display and the Month of Fire.

The build is currently made of three separate modules that can be arranged in different ways. Each module is built on a 16x16 plate.

After putting together Lewa as my first Flickr upload and Gali for BobtheDoctor's contest at the end of last year, I've pretty much made it my mission to revamp the Phantoka/Mistika over the course of my time at Flickr. So here's the next entry, Tahu Mistika.

Tahu's Mistika mask was probably one of the most controversial of Bionicle, but in contrast, his 2016 mask is one of the best, so might as well use it here.

I'm really happy he can do this.
