These glass bottles - two fat lentoid (lens-like) amphoriskoi and one tall amphoriskos (literally meaning ‘small amphora’) - were all mold-blown, a technique developed in the century after glassmaking was developed in the Eastern Mediterranean. The lentoid amphoriskos on the left has a flower in a medallion on the center of the body, while the similar amphoriskos on the right has a series of concentric circles/ridges. The amphoriskos in the center is really just a scaled-down long, banded amphora, and was originally a bright transparent yellow (which you can see on the left side).
Initially affordable only among the wealthy, glass was used in ancient Rome as containers for oils, perfume, and tablewares. The variety of glass-making techniques reveals the changing tastes and fashions over the centuries. During the 1st century CE, cast glass was a novel form that was a luxury for the Roman household, but by the end of the century, the innovation of mold-blown glass - the technique used to create these vessels - allowed for less labor-intensive and less expensive production and meant people of lesser means could afford them. Blown glass became so popular it nearly supplanted ceramic and even bronze wares in the home.
Roman, all 1st century CE, made in Syria or Palestine.

Here are all of my Emerald Band tableware. The largest one in the back is Fire King, the rest are Corning/Pyrex. They are all different sizes.
Coffee/tea cups. Functional ceramics, tableware. They are made with stone ware clay, and glazed in an oxidizing atmosphere.
Found these little beauties yesterday while thrifting. I think they were meant to have a gold rim. Just a little bit left on one of them. I don't really like the whole gilded thing anyway, so no big deal to me!
I have been creating these pieces for an art festival in Atlanta, Georgia but you can also find them in my etsy shop at www.joyelizabethceramics.etsy.com
