This cool Upcycled Spool Table can accommodate 10-12 people, and was made from a very large, 190cm (approx 74 ¾”) spool. We cut one side down to 120cm (approx. 47 ¼”) to create the table base. This is a fun project!
Here’s how we made this Upcycled Spool Table:
First, try to get a monster like this home! It took a trailer and some friends to help us. Be cautious with loading and unloading. Next, we decided which side was in better condition as the table top, and carefully placed that facing down. The insides of these large spools are supported with metal similar to rebar reinforcements, so be cautious when you’re beginning to cut this piece down. One way to do this is to unbolt the bottom after you scribe a line around the whole piece when you decide your table height.
We cut the centerboards down to the height we liked and removed all the metal rods. Next, we reinstalled the center boards. We cut the bottom end piece down to the dimensions listed above. You can use a string to scribe a circle, and then cut it with a band or jig saw. When everything was trimmed to the dimensions we liked, we reinstalled the bottom and sanded everything smooth. The table was flipped back over and then we sealed it.
We think it looks great, and if you’re lucky enough to find an XXL spool like this, don’t be afraid to modify it! Your toes will appreciate it in the summertime.

"The dassie, or rock hyrax, is anatomically the closest living relative to the elephant."
Go figure.

I used pottery I collected off the beach - the edges are all soft and worn and in many cases the pattern has worn almost completely away. I deliberately made the surface uneven, and used an ivory grout, to give the appearance of pieces washed up on the shore.
