Samen met Zagato (SZ staat dan ook voor Sprint Zagato) werd de sportwagen eind jaren tachtig ontwikkeld om het imago van Alfa een beetje op te krikken. Zeldzaam is de SZ ook zeker. De planning was 1000, maar uiteindelijk werden er 1036 stuks geproduceerd.
