There is a need for a book that fully examines the specific and unique awareness, knowledge, and skills that are necessary for student affairs and other practitioners to be effective and ethical in their helping, counseling, and advising roles. This book addresses the core assumptions and underlying beliefs that impact the helping, counseling, and advising roles and skills that are central to higher education. It synthesizes and integrates information from traditional counseling therapy texts and offers examples of how to utilize such skills within student affairs. Written for faculty members and professionals.

A mixed media jewelry piece, that presends a combination of wire wrapping, synthesizing textures and materials... A fabric necklace surrounds the neckline, made from cotton and silk, with cotton spikes with tyrquise wooden beads serving it with movement and depth. A beaded wire crystal flower, made from chech crystal leaves and copper wire stands gently on the left of the piece, while a wire wrapped copper heart pendant works as the centerpiece, surrounded by tyrquise wooden beads, and embracing a chech glass round black bead in its curves. A handmade copper chain works as an extension chain for the mixed media, wire, fabric and beads necklace, whixh has the overall length of 50cm.

It's a beautiful and light weighted necklace in colours of brown copper and turquise, with details of light green and black. Perfect to suit a great variety of outfits.

It was with much sorrow

and a heavy heart

that I learned today of the death of Duane Jarvis-

a great songwriter, guitarist

and man. Only 51, he died

of colon cancer.

I'd only met him once - it was

at a recording session

on July 12, 2006 that

Peter Case

was holding at a studio in

East L.A. Duane was very soft-spoken, with gentle humor, a

genuinely warm, sweet man.

I was there to take some photos

of Peter, so only took

a few of Duane - of which

this is one - he and Peter

were cutting tracks live-

two guitars, drums, vocal -

and Duane was very

sensitive to the music,

playing only when he felt it

added the right color, the

opposite of so many flashy

guitarists.

Now Peter is very ill too-

he had a heart attack,

and open heart surgery.

And Duane is gone. Again

the same lesson I learn so

many times - no one is

here forever. People are

checking out everyday -

young and old. Appreciate

them now while they are here.

I think what would make him

happy - what makes any musician

happy - is to hear his music.

You can hear some

rest in peace, duane.

This is an article I found

online today about him,

DUANE JARVIS,

Famed Guitarist & Songwriter

Dies of Colon Cancer

By PETER COOPER

The Tennessean

Duane Jarvis, the amiable singer-songwriter who commanded stages with what Rosie Flores called a “Keith Richards flair and a honky-tonk heart,” died this morning in his Los Angeles apartment. He was 51 and battled colon cancer for 16 months.

Mr. Jarvis, who recorded five critically acclaimed solo albums, lived in Nashville from 1994 until recently. Known to his friends as “D.J.,” he played guitar on recordings by Flores, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Dwight Yoakam, Frank Black, Amy Rigby, Giant Sand, Peter Case and many others. He toured with artists including Prine, Black and The Divinyls, and his songs were featured in motion pictures The Horse Whisperer and The Rookie.

He was an admirable conundrum: a rock ’n’ roller known for kindness and gentility, and a shy and soft-spoken man known for his electrifying stage presence.

“D.J. was such an unassuming fellow. He was quiet and sincere,” said Prine. “But he also had this Rolling Stones thing going on when he was onstage, whether he was playing country or rock. (Wife) Fiona and I would go see him whenever I was in town and whenever he was playing. I loved his songs.”

Mr. Jarvis grew up on the west coast, in Oregon, Washington and California. His father — who often played country records around the house — was in the U.S. Coast Guard, and his mother was a nurse. Mr. Jarvis was fascinated by music from an early age. As a pre-teen, he lived briefly in Florida, where he saw blues legend BB King in concert. At show’s end, he moved to the edge of the stage, where King saw him and handed him a guitar pick that he kept throughout his life.

As a teenager, Mr. Jarvis joined a blues band and then became a member of power pop group The Odds.

“I was very quiet, and music was my big outlet which helped me communicate with people,” he told interviewer Shuichi Iwami. “I think I would have been kind of lost without it.”

In concert, Mr. Jarvis would sometimes proclaim “This is what we live for,” before striking a guitar chord and singing one of his self-penned stories.

Mr. Jarvis moved from Oregon to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, and he became part of an L.A. country scene that included Flores, Yoakam, Williams, Buddy Miller, The Blasters and Jim Lauderdale. Mr. Jarvis wrote songs and worked in Long Tall Marvin, a band fronted by Lone Justice founder Marvin Etzioni, and his session work included playing guitar on Williams’ Sweet Old World album.

He also played club gigs and made demo recordings, and the recordings caught the ear of former Replacements manager Peter Jesperson, who ran Medium Cool Records in Minnesota. Medium Cool released D.J.’s Front Porch in 1994, the same year that Mr. Jarvis moved to Nashville.

“The careening ‘Good On Paper’ and the wistful ‘Back of Beyond’ sound like lost gems that were left off (the Rolling Stones’) Let It Bleed,” wrote Bob Cannon of Entertainment Weekly in a review of D.J.’s Front Porch. “Jarvis seems to spit out these evocative country-soul tunes effortlessly, indicating that Front Porch is built to last.”

For Mr. Jarvis, Nashville offered an opportunity to collaborate with like-minded, left-of-center talents such as Tim Carroll, Amy Rigby, Steve Allen, Joy Lynn White and Dave Coleman. Music City was also a place for him to settle into healthier routines.

“Los Angeles was a fast track, and I was the one driving the car,” he told The Tennessean in 2000. “I’m the eternal optimist. I feel there’s a place for my songs in Nashville.”

One of those songs, a co-write with Williams called “Still I Long For Your Kiss,” wound up in a movie soundtrack and was recorded by Williams on her breakthrough Car Wheels On A Gravel Road album.

He also placed songs on albums by Carroll, White, Greg Trooper, Pinmonkey, Peter Case and others. Mr. Jarvis’ music was a mash of rock, country, R&B and blues, distilled into what is now often called “Americana.” As a staff songwriter for Leiber and Stoller, he scored no major radio hits, but his songs and guitar work were key elements in a street-level movement that offered a creatively compelling alternative to the more sanitized sounds coming from Music Row.

That movement was synthesized on a Bloodshot Records compilation called Nashville: The Other Side of the Alley, an album that featured Mr. Jarvis’ “Cocktail Napkin” alongside cuts from artists including Carroll, Paul Burch, Phil Lee and Jason & The Scorchers.

“D.J. was amazing in his guitar playing and in his whole spirit,” said Buddy Miller, who once hired Mr. Jarvis to engineer a recording even though Mr. Jarvis had no engineering experience. “He didn’t know what buttons to press, but he learned fast and we could show him all that. The important thing when you’re recording is to have people there who bring comfort and a good feeling to the room. He was just the best guy to be around.”

In Nashville, Mr. Jarvis recorded solo albums Far From Perfect (1998), Combo Platter (1999), Certified Miracle (2001) and Delicious (2003). Each album found Mr. Jarvis combining hard-won knowledge with his signature soulful wit.

“It takes a worried man to sing a worried song/ Had no idea I’d be singing for so long,” he wrote on “Spread My Soul Too Thin,” from 2003’s Delicious. On Certified Miracle’s “Broke Not Busted” Mr. Jarvis sang, “I might not be what you bargained for/ I’m a discount bin, not a money drawer.”

In 2007, Mr. Jarvis — who by then had moved back to Los Angeles — was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. That same year, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He endured multiple surgeries and round of chemotherapy, and in March of 2009 he entered hospice care.

Music remained a constant through his final days. Friend Billy Block said Mr. Jarvis offered a bed-ridden but note-perfect version of the Ben E King hit “Stand By Me” last Thursday, and Rosie Flores said he entertained her last week by picking out a song on a banjo.

As news of Mr. Jarvis’ death spread today, friends emailed memories to Web site guest books. They wrote of songs shared on stages and in backyards, beers shared at the old Sherlock Holmes Pub, and of the kindnesses that Mr. Jarvis bestowed upon friends. They remarked on the music that lives on, and of the peculiar grace that passed with the musician.

Sand Castle Worm aka Honeycomb Tube Worm (Phragmatopoma californica)?

"The sandcastle worm got its name from its ability to synthesize a glue in order to build a protective home out of sand grains and shell fragments found on the seafloor. The strength of the adhesive is impressive, and researchers at the University of Utah have managed to replicate it synthetically hoping to create a material that may help repair bones without the use screws, pins, and other woodworking tools that Zimmer and DePuy are famous for." medGadget 19 Aug 2009

AGARTHA! It is a name that has made many occultists dream, even if it covers notions that are ill-defined and sometimes contradictory. What is it, in fact, a mysterious subterranean kingdom situated on the borders of Tibet and Mongolia or an enigmatic secret society? Both versions have their followers, but there is every reason to believe that they each have a part of the truth. If we synthesize the rare informations that have filtered on the subject, the Agartha (or Agharta Agarthi, according to some) would be a world assembly of wise men, philosophers whose aim would be to achieve a greater spiritual enlightenment of the world through the application of the millenary secrets that it alone has.Its seat would be Ch' an-Cheng Lob, a sanctuary of the Tien-Shan Mountains or "heavenly mountains". It is in the last century that Saint-Yves d' Alveydre reported for the first time in the West this name of Agartha. Curious character that this occultist, great master of the Martinist order, precursor of the synarchy (see the box below), alchemist who composed formulas for the production of gold and silver by sulphidation of inferior metals, knowing perfectly Hebrew and Sanskrit, which allowed him to trace back to the sources of Kabbalah and Brahmanism. Born in 1842, of Breton origin, the Marquis d' Alveydre married Countess Weller, related to the high European aristocracy, who facilitated his contacts with the imperial court of Saint Petersburg and gave him the opportunity to meet initiates of the tsarist monasteries of Central Asia. He wrote down what he had learnt in a book, Mission of India, which he had printed, but destroyed the entire edition of which he was remorseful for revealing secrets that did not belong to him, except for a single copy which came into Papus' hands and made it possible to make a second edition in 1910. After Saint-Yves d' Alveydre, Jacoliot, former consul of France, alluded to the Agartha in the Bible in India, then it was the turn of H. -P. Blavatsky, the founder of theosophy, in the secret Doctrine and unveiled suspension. A little later, in the King of the World, René Guénon gives ample information on the Agartha. According to him, a natural or provoked cataclysm would have put an end, millennia ago, to the advanced civilization of the Gobi. The spiritual masters of this part of the world, nicknamed cc the sons of the Outside Intelligences "(it is necessary to see there an extraterrestrial origin...), found refuge in an immense network of caverns under the Himalayas. Soon they split into two groups,"the right hand path", installed in Agartha, a city of contemplation, of non-participation in the world, and "the left hand path", based in Shamballah, a city of violence (But some say that Shamballah is an oasis of light). However, the most complete and surprising information about the Agartha comes from Ferdinand Ossendowski. This Polish, a former minister of the government of Admiral Xolchak who tried to oppose the Bolshevik revolution, had to flee in front of the Red Army through Mongolia and part of China. During his odyssey, he lived for some time in lamaseries where he collected first-hand information that he exhibited in his story "Beasts, men and gods" published in 1924 by Plon (republished by "J' ai lu" in 1970 as part of the collection "The Mysterious Adventure" No. A 202).

The biggest cover-up of all time is the fact that there is a civilization of people living in the center of Earth, whose civilization's name is known as "Agartha" (variations: 'Agharta' & 'Aghartha'). This may be hard for some of you to believe. I know it was for me at first, however, I now have an absolute knowingness of the truth of this. To begin with, the Buddhists, in their theology fervently believe in its existence. They believe it to be a race of super men and women who occasionally come to the surface to oversee the development of the human race. They also believe that this subterranean world has millions of inhabitants and many cities, and their capital is Shamballa. The Master of this world was believed to have given orders to the Dalai Lama of Tibet, who was his terrestrial representative. His messages were being transmitted through certain secret tunnels connecting this inner world with Tibet. The famous Russian channel, Nicholas Roerich, who was a channel for the Ascended Master, El Morya, claimed that Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, was connected by a tunnel with the inner earth, Shamballa. The entrance of this tunnel was guarded by lamas who were sworn to secrecy. A similar tunnel was believed to connect the secret chambers at the base of the great pyramid at Giza, and Agartha. The Indian epic, the Ramayana and the Bhagavad Gita are the two most famous texts of India. The Ramayana tells the story of the great Avatar Rama. The Bhagavad Gita tells the story of Krishna. The Ramayana describes Rama as an "emissary from Agartha", who arrived on an air vehicle. This is quite extraordinary in that both the Buddhist and Hindu religions separately refer to Agartha. The first public scientific evidence occurred in 1947 when Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd of the United States Navy flew directly to the North Pole and instead of going over the pole, actually entered the Inner Earth. In his diary with other witnesses, he tells of entering the hollow interior of the Earth, and traveling 1700 miles over mountains, lakes, rivers, green vegetation and animal life. He tells of seeing monstrous animals resembling the mammoth of antiquity moving through the underbrush. He eventually found cities and a thriving civilization. His plane was finally greeted by flying machines, the type he had never seen before. They escorted him to a safe landing place and he was graciously greeted by emissaries from Agartha. After resting, he and his crew were taken to meet the Ruler of Agartha. They told him that he had been allowed to enter Agartha because of his high moral and ethical character. They went on to say that ever since the United States had dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they had been very concerned for their own safety and survival. They had decided that it was time to make greater contact with the outside world to make sure we didn't destroy this planet and their civilization with it. They had been allowed in for this express purpose, as a way of making contact with someone they trusted. To make a long story short, Admiral Byrd and his crew, upon their visit, were guided by their hosts in their plane back to the outer world, and their lives were changed forever. In January, 1956, Admiral Byrd led another expedition to the Antarctic and/or the South Pole. In this expedition he and his crew penetrated for 2,300 miles into the center of Earth again. Admiral Byrd states that the North and South Pole are actually two of many openings to the center of Earth. I can't but help think about Jules Vernes famous science fiction book, "Journey to the Center of the Earth", which many of you may have read or watched the movie version. Admiral Byrd also states Inner Earth has an inner Sun. Admiral Byrd's theory is that the poles of the Earth are convex, rather than concave. Ships and planes can actually fly or drive right in. The American press announced Admiral Byrd's discovery, however it was immediately suppressed by our good friends, the Secret Government. Ray Palmer, the editor of "Flying Saucer Magazine" did a detailed story on Admiral Byrd's discovers. The United States Government either bought, stole or destroyed almost every copy and then destroyed the plates at the printing press. I have been told that the exact same thing happened in respect to an article done on Admiral Byrd's discovery by the "National Geographic". The magazine was released and the U.S. Government gobbled up almost every issue. If the story wasn't true how come the Government was so uptight?Another interesting fact is that the United States Government does not let planes fly over the poles. All flights are directed to go around the Poles, and any airline pilot flying in these areas will tell you this. Another interesting phenomena is the fact that the icebergs are composed of fresh water and not salt water that drift from the Poles. Another interesting question is why it is warmer nearer the Poles than it is 600 to 1000 miles away from it.

Whenever I do research on a given subject I like to get Djwhal Khul's feedback on the information I have come up with. Upon sharing with Him what I have shared with you in this book, he had a number of interesting things to add. First off, he confirmed that Admiral Byrd did, indeed, travel to the Inner Earth as he said he did. He said that there is a Sun in the Inner Earth, but it is different than our outer Sun. He said that the Aurora Borealis was not caused by the Sun of the Inner Earth, but from a different light source. He said that the opening at the Poles were very wide and ships and planes can fly into it, however it is naturally protected by some kind of energy field.

"Several of the Inner Earth inhabitants, huge giants, detected our boat on the river, and were quite amazed. They were, however, quite friendly. We were invited to dine with them in their homes, and so my companion and I separated, he going with one giant to that giant's home and I going with another giant to his home. "My gigantic friend brought me home to his family and I was completely dismayed to see the huge size of all the objects in his home. The dinner table was colossal. A plate was put before me and filled with a portion of food so big it would have fed me abundantly an entire week. The Giant offered me a cluster of grapes and each grape was as big as one of our peaches. I tasted one and found it far sweeter than any I had ever tasted outside. In the interior of the Earth all the fruits and vegetables taste far better and more flavorsome than those we have on the outer surface of the Earth. "We stayed with the Giants for one year, enjoying their companionship as much as they enjoyed knowing us. We observed many strange and unusual things during our visit with these remarkable people, and were continually amazed at their scientific progress and inventions. "All of this time they were never unfriendly to us, and we were allowed to return to our own home in the same manner in which we came… in fact, they courteously offered their protection if we should need it for the return voyage." People can find it if they really search for it, however, it is slightly camouflaged by this energy field. He confirmed that there were entrances to the Inner Earth in Egypt, Tibet and the Yukatan, and also added that there were other entrances in the Bermuda Triangle, Soviet Union, and Africa. He said that there were different races in the Inner Earth just like on the surface of the Earth, and some of them are quite tall. He also confirmed that the United States Government and other countries are aware of the Inner Earth and are coverin up the fact as they are with UFO's and extraterrestrials.

HADES. Naraka. Guinee. Xibalba. Though names may differ from one set of teachings to another, almost every religion on the planet features the concept of an underworld—a place to which the souls of the dead are banished, for penance or punishment. So in honor of 31 Days of Halloween, we mined the Atlas for the various purported entrances to the netherworld, scattered across the globe, ranging from Mayan caves to Japanese swamps. But remember: If you should decide to visit any of these sites, it should be noted by way of a disclaimer that we take no responsibility whatsoever for the consequences of your attempts to open an infernal portal.

Our first gateway is an entrance to the Classical hell: the Cape Matapan Caves which are located on the southernmost tip of the Greek mainland. Cape Matapan—also known as Cape Tainaron, or Tenaro—is situated on the end of the peninsula known as the Mani. The caves open at sea-level into a cliff face beneath the headland, the exact point marked by the ruins of a Spartan temple above. This was one of several entrances that the Ancient Greeks ascribed to Hades, the Kingdom of the Shades. Others were to be found at the Necromanteion of Ephyra on the River Acheron, as well as at Alepotrypa: another, smaller cave network on the Mani. When Orpheus travelled down to Hades to rescue Eurydice, it was said to be through the cave on Cape Matapan; Hercules likewise used these caverns when he made his own descent to the underworld. The geographer Pausanias identified Cape Matapan as the point where, supposedly, “Cerberus was brought up from Hades by Herakles” (Description of Greece, 2nd century AD).Another story related by Pausanias linked to the picturesque cape relates to the poet Arion, who escaped from pirates to be carried ashore by a pod of dolphins. A bronze statue of the poet riding a dolphin stands on the crest of the cape, not far from the ruins of a temple raised in honor of the sea god, Poseidon.

The caves at Matapan can still be entered by visitors, although a boat is required to pass through the watery mouth of this particular hellgate.

Our next location, the imposing stratovolcano known as Hekla, can be found in the southern mountains of Iceland… a fiery pit of lava that has long been associated with the fiery pit of Christian tradition. In the Middle Ages, Cistercian monks travelled far and wide across Europe carrying tales of “Hekla Fell.” In 1180, the monk Herbert de Clairvaux named the volcano in his book, Liber De Miraculis. He wrote: “The renowned fiery cauldron of Sicily, which men call Hell’s chimney […] that cauldron is affirmed to be like a small furnace compared to this enormous inferno.” The monk Benedict named Hekla as the “eternal prison of Judas” in his poem about the voyages of Saint Brendan from 1120. Later, in 1341, the medieval Icelandic manuscript Flatey Book Annal described large birds that were reportedly seen flying inside the fiery crater; these were believed to be the souls of the damned. There have been more than 20 serious eruptions recorded since 874 AD, although in recent years Hekla has been somewhat more peaceful. Most superstitions regarding the volcano died out by the 19th century; nevertheless, local folklore still tells of witches who gather around the volcano’s peak each Easter.

An altogether quite different hellgate can be found in the heart of China—a city of ghosts with close ties to Naraka, the underworld of Chinese mythology. Visitors to Fengdu are treated to a rare glimpse into the workings of hell. This 2,000-year-old settlement is located on Ming Hill, at the northern end of the Yangtze River. Founded during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), the Fengdu “City of Ghosts” bases its heritage on the story of two renegade officials who fled here to escape the Emperor. Their names, Yin and Wang, were later adapted to form a title for one of the rulers of hell: “Qinguang Wang Jiang.” Fengdu is famous for its striking, traditional architecture and elaborate craftsmanship. Its streets and squares are filled with statues of ghosts and demons, as well as poignant reminders of the punishments that await the wicked in the next life. Most of the city’s landmarks are linked to hellish themes: “Ghost Torturing Pass,” “Nothing-to-be-Done Bridge,” and “Last Glance at Home Tower.” Perhaps most striking of all though, is “The Ghost King”—a giant, carved face looking down on the city from a rock face. Measuring 138 meters (about 452 feet) tall and 217 meters (about 712 feet) across, Fengdu’s “Ghost King” is the largest rock sculpture in the world.

To locate our next gate, we travel from ancient China to ancient Rome.

Each year thousands of tourists flock to the Roman Forum, and this well-preserved landmark is one of Rome’s most popular attractions. Relatively few of Rome’s visitors are aware, however, of the story behind the small stone well that stands at the Forum’s heart; once believed to serve as an entrance to the underworld. Lacus Curtius, or the “Lake of Curtius,” takes its name from an ancient Roman legend. The historian Livy wrote of a time when an oracle foretold the fall of Rome. The message, “quo plurimum populus Romanus posset,” warned that the city would crumble unless it was prepared to sacrifice that which it held most dear. Meanwhile, a chasm opened in the center of the forum to accept that offering. Interpreting this riddle to mean Rome’s soldiers, centurion Marcus Curtius sacrificed his own life—donning full armor before riding his horse into the pit. The chasm closed over his head, and Rome was saved. While other myths link the Lacus Curtius to the Sabine horseman known as Mettius Curtius (or alternatively to the Roman consul, Gaius Curtius Philon), the true origins of the pit have been long since lost to the mists of time. Livy holds that the story of Marcus Curtius is the most plausible of the myths—despite its blatant disregard for the laws of physics.

The stone relief visible in the image above is a modern replica of an ancient plaque, depicting Curtius mounted upon his horse and prepared for sacrifice.

There is a cave network located in modern-day Belize, which the Mayans believed was an entrance to their underworld: Xibalba. The name Actun Tunichil Muknal translates as “Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre.” Extensive research has linked the site, located in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, to ancient Mayan legends. These stories described rivers of blood and scorpions, and a vast subterranean labyrinth ruled over by the Mayan death gods, the demonic “Lords of Xibalba.”

Since their rediscovery in 1989, the caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal have become a popular destination for explorers. There are numerous landmarks that make this network particularly interesting, including a vast chamber of stalactites known as the “Cathedral.” Amongst scattered fragments of pottery and bone, one of the more notable discoveries is the skeleton of an 18-year-old girl. Believed to have been ritualistically murdered in the cave as a sacrifice to the Death Gods, she has been nicknamed the “Crystal Maiden”; over the 1,000 years since her death, her bones have calcified to create a shimmering, crystal effect. Other human remains found in the caves were believed to have been sacrifices given to the rain god Chac, and many of these show similar signs of calcification (although none are quite so perfectly preserved as the Crystal Maiden). Another theory suggests that the various dead may have been suspected of witchcraft—possibly suffering from physical or mental ailments, their unburied corpses were sealed within the hell gate in hopes that their spirits might be forever trapped.

According to Voodoo mythology, the newly dead are sent to a kind of purgatory before travelling to meet their ancestors in the “deep waters.” Known as Guinee, this twilight realm is presided over by the notorious loa who goes by the name of Baron Samedi. There are tales of Voodoo practitioners opening the Gates of Guinee to reclaim the souls of the dead; souls in this lost land are also considered to be at high risk from Hoodoo magicians, who have the power to reanimate them as zombies.

While some followers of Voodoo interpret the seven gates as a spiritual metaphor, others believe them to exist in the physical realm. One of these stories locates the gates in New Orleans. To enter Guinee, it is said that one must open the seven gates in the correct order. Each successive gate is presided over by one of the loa of death, the “Guédé,” who must be appeased with the appropriate offerings. Although the exact locations of the gates have never been disclosed, there have been oblique suggestions over the years that a clue may lie in the “veve,” or summoning sigil of Baron Samedi himself. Appearing as a crucifix surmounted by seven stars, the symbol might indeed serve as a map of sorts; once aligned over the crossroads of Canal Street and Basin Street in the city’s French Quarter, the stars of the veve seem to fall on notable surrounding cemeteries.

The next hellgate on our list was discounted for thousands of years as a work of fiction; however, the Ancient Greek site known as Pluto’s Gate, or the “Ploutonion,” has only recently been rediscovered in Turkey. An archaeological dig revealed the remains of an ancient temple situated on a thermal spring, long believed to have been a gateway to hell. This well-documented Temple of Pluto disappeared from records sometime around the 6th century.

Amongst the distinguishing features of this particular gate are the toxic fumes which waft out from tunnels beneath. In times of antiquity these were often inhaled by the priests of Pluto, promptly sending them into hallucinogenic trance states. Writing at some time around the year 0 AD, the Greek philosopher Strabo claimed that, “any animal that passes inside meets instant death.” Even now, the poisonous vapors claim the lives of birds that fly or nest too close to the ruins.

ong with Iceland’s Hekla, this next site serves as an entrance to the Hell of Christian scripture. Founded in the 15th century, St Patrick’s Purgatory is a small monastery located on Ireland’s Station Island. According to the story, St. Patrick himself once visited the island—whereupon Jesus sent him visions of the torments of hell. The cave where the saint received these diabolical hallucinations was later confirmed to be an entrance to Satan’s pit, and a monastery was duly built to plug the hole. The cave itself has been sealed ever since October 25, 1632. According to the accounts of pilgrims prior to that date, it takes the form of an enclosed pit, reached at the end of a long, narrow, and slowly descending cave. Experts have suggested that even before the believed arrival of St. Patrick, the cave may have been used as a site for prayer and spiritual healing. Many believers travel to Station Island annually, to undertake a three-day contemplation on the nature of Hell. With pilgrims expected to make the entire trip barefoot, a local website describes the pilgrimage as, “the toughest in all of Europe, perhaps even in the whole Christian world.” In Far East Asia, our next gateway takes the primordial form of a bubbling pool of hellish red slime… now featuring a visitor’s center, a health spa, and gift shop. Beppu City in Japan is home to a series of nine hot springs, each one flowing in a different colour and composition. The springs have been mentioned in Buddhist texts dating back as early as 700 AD, and nowadays the mud from these pools can be bought as a soothing skin cream. However, at the heart of this idyllic spa there lies a dark legend with the pool known as Chinoike Jigoku, or the “Bloody Hell Pond,” the rich color coming from natural iron oxide deposits on the pond bed. Chinoike Jigoku is presided over by a collection of sculpted demons, some carved into the rocks themselves. The Buddhists likened the appearance of the pool to the bubbling pits of hell, and in times gone by the Bloody Hell Pond – reckoned at around 78 degrees Celsius—was sometimes used to torture prisoners before boiling them alive.

Meanwhile, in a quiet little backwater of York, Pennsylvania, one finds Hellam Township—by all accounts a pleasant, friendly town, and unremarkable, were it not for the rumored existence of a gateway to Hell in a nearby forest.

There are a number of contradictory stories explaining the “Seven Gates“ of Hellam Township. One of the better-known myths ties them to an insane asylum on the town’s outskirts, which supposedly burnt to the ground in the 19th century. According to this particular legend, the inmates—most of them criminally insane, of course—escaped, only to be recaptured using a series of tall fences and secure gates. Many were beaten to death by guards in the process.

An alternate story tells of a doctor who once lived in the town. This man (by some accounts a Satanist, by others merely eccentric) was said to have designed a series of strange gates on his land, which followed a winding path running deeper and deeper into the forest. Where stories agree, is that those who pass through the gates in order will find themselves transported straight to the underworld. Only the first gate is visible by daylight, situated in woodland just off Hellam’s Trout Run Road. Our final gateway to Hell is also perhaps the oldest on this list; a diabolical portal well-known to the ancient Romans, and first described in writing over 2,000 years ago. In his classic work The Aeneid, Virgil describes a cave with a hundred entrances that led deep beneath the earth—and as far as the underworld itself.

“The gates of hell are open night and day;

Smooth the descent, and easy is the way…”

Virgil wrote his masterpiece in the 1st century BC, and it tells the story of the Trojan hero Aeneas. It was in this cave—located in Cumae, a Greek settlement close to modern-day Naples—that Aeneas encountered the Sibyl. The Cumaean Sibyl was an oracle, a fortune-teller, and priestess, whose sung prophecies echoed endlessly around the hollow caverns. At the age of 700 she served as a guide to Aeneas, as he descended through the caves to the Hell below.

Explorers in the Middle Ages searched in vain for Virgil’s “Antro della Sibilla.” It wasn’t until 1932 however, that archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri (fresh from his excavations at Pompeii) finally discovered this well-documented entrance to the netherworld. Now incorporated into the Cumae Archaeological Site, it is possible for tourists to visit the Cave of the Sibyl for themselves; and to experience those haunting echoes described so many years ago by the poet Virgil:

“As many voices issue, and the sound of Sybil’s words as many times rebound.”

I took this SEM image at April 2016. Magnification was 450. The distance between the objective lens and sample was 8 mm. In this image, synthesized crystals were produced on the surface of a single fiber by applying microfluidic device. By controlling the flow rate and reaction time (without changing any chemical precursors) inside the microfluidic device, we could synthesize different shaped crystals, such as ''seaweed-like'' as in this image.

Synthesized crystals with different shapes were loaded onto/within single fiber, which will result in a change of the fiber mechanical properties, such as flexibility, elasticity, and thermosensitivity etc.. In this project, we tried to vary the type and shape of the crystals to tune the fiber properties. In this image, many '' seaweed-like'' crystals were synthesized on the surface of a single fiber. ¦ Image#1_284

In Greek mythology the Titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods on Mount Olympus to give to humanity. Furious, Zeus, king of the Olympians, ordered Prometheus forever chained to a rock, where each day an eagle would devour the Titan’s perpetually regenerating liver. This painting, which Rubens considered one of his most important works, represents the virtuoso artist at his absolute height.

Working in collaboration, a common practice for master artists in Antwerp in the first two decades of the seventeenth century, Rubens and the famed animal and still-life painter Frans Snyders, who contributed the eagle, rendered the brutal tale of Prometheus with corresponding violence.

The enormous bird’s beak rips open the Titan’s torso, exposing blood-soaked entrails. To gain purchase on the captive’s flesh, one of the eagle’s talons gouges Prometheus’s right eye. His left eye is locked on the predator, signaling he is fully aware of his torture, while his writhing legs, clenched fist, and tousled hair convey the Titan’s abject agony. Rubens, who intensively had studied the art he saw on his travels to Italy, Spain, and England, derived the hulking figure of Prometheus, with its broad frame and dense musculature, from prototypes by Michelangelo.

The picture’s asymmetrical composition, in which Prometheus tumbles downward with his left arm almost reaching beyond the canvas, was inspired by a painting by Titian of the giant Tityus (1548 – 49; Museo del Prado, Madrid). Here Rubens masterfully synthesized and melded these sources with his own Baroque sensibilities.

Jointed sandstone in the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA.

-----------------------------

(Synthesized from info. provided by several geologists during the 2003 Annual Field Conference of the Great Lakes Section, Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists):

The Lower Pennsylvanian Sharon Formation is a 10-15 meter thick, ledge-forming, erosion-resistant unit. The Sharon is paleovalley-filling in places, so it is thicker than 10-15 meters in some spots. The jointing patterns of the Sharon Formation allow for 3-D examination around large blocks of outcrop - can see the 3-D architecture of sedimentary structures. The Pottsville Group lies over a major unconformity, which was formed by eustatic sealevel fall & erosion. The Sharon Formation is the basal unit of the Pottsville sediments over this unconformity. In terms of the tectonic setting, this is in the Appalachian Foreland Basin. What influenced sedimentation and sediment supply of the Sharon Formation during the Early Pennsylvanian? Probably a migrating forebulge and Early Pennsylvanian climatic changes. The Sharon is correlatable with the Olean Conglomerate in Pennsylvania. Both the Sharon and the Olean are time-equivalent to the Tumbling Hill Member & the Huylkill Member of the lower Pottsville Formation of central Pennsylvania (both of those members are below the major unconformity in Pennsylvania, unlike in northeastern Ohio). The Sharon Conglomerate/Formation & the Olean Conglomerate were deposited under strong north-to-south paleoflow conditions.

About twelve lithofacies can be seen in the Sharon Formation in the Akron, Ohio area. The Sharon Formation is dominantly conglomerate and sandstone, with lots of sedimentary structures. It is light on fine-grained materials. The Sharon has horizontally bedded gravels, cross-bedded gravels (including trough and tabular cross bedding), deformed/overturned cross-bed sets, basal scours up to 2 meters deep (but typically 0.5 to 1 meter deep; scours are backfilled by dune/bar back migration), whole channel fills, chute fills, and gravel bar platform deposits (usually 1-2 meters thick in the Sharon; these include bar head deposits, bar core deposits, bar tail deposits, and bar margin deposits - can usually use the presence of imbricated clasts to ID bar-head & bar-core portions of gravel bar platforms, but in the Sharon, clasts are mostly spheroidal, so it is difficult to tell specific portions of gravel platforms here). In the gravel-rich Sharon deposits, get calculated average bankfull depths of 2.1 meters, 19.9 meter average paleochannel widths, and 34.3 meter maximum paleochannel widths. Get different numbers for the sandy Sharon deposits. The Sharon is typically more conglomeratic at the base & more sandy near the top. The Sharon’s interpreted depositional environment is gravel & sand bedload streams. Paleovalleys underneath the Sharon Formation were formed when the subsidence rate was greater than the sediment supply. Paleovalley backfilling (i.e., Sharon deposits) occurred when the subsidence rate was less than the sediment supply. The change in fluvial style seen in Sharon deposits is probably due to filling & overtopping of paleovalleys.

Beds of the Sharon Formation are usually cliff-forming. The Sharon in the Akron area consists of quartz-pebble conglomerate & quartzose sandstone & pebbly quartzose sandstone & sandy quartz-pebble conglomerate & some lenses or thin intervals of granulestone. The basal Sharon is conglomeratic - the “lower conglomerate”. An “upper conglomerate” can be seen in places - it is usually quite thin (1-2 pebbles thick in places), and in some places, it splits into two horizons; in some places it’s not there at all. Pebbles are almost entirely white vein quartz, with an uncertain source from the north. Detrital muscovite in the Sharon has been dated to about 370 and 406 Ma (Devonian), so the source area includes Acadian Orogeny materials. The Sharon has relatively common cross-bedding, with a few overturned cross-beds visible in areas. Abundant iron oxide staining is present in the Sharon sandstones, with a variety of morphologies - this can weather out as resistant ridges or as 3-D surfaces. Many vugs have thick goethite linings. Many goethite-stained quartz pebbles are present. Seeps & springs occur sporadically along the sandstones of the lower Sharon Formation in places. These spring waters have widely variable pH and TDS (total dissolved solids). Some dry springs are present - conduits without water emerging. A few places in basal Sharon strata have obvious rip-up shale clasts, derived from uppermost Meadville Shale beds (below the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian unconformity). One outcrop is known with many Meadville Shale clasts mixed in with Sharon quartz pebbles - this appears to represent paleobank failure of Meadville material during near-earliest Sharon deposition.

The outcrop shown above is at Virginia Kendall Ledges in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Virginia Kendall Ledges is an isolated platform of Sharon Formation, surrounded by a lower land surface of Lower Mississippian Cuyahoga Formation shales & siltstones & sandstones. The lower Sharon Formation at this site is quite pebbly - many pebble-filled channelform features are present. Upon 3-D examination of their architecture, these are not channels or chutes, but are interpreted by Professor Neil Wells as bar confluence scours with subsequent pebble fills. The edges of the Virginia Kendall Ledges platform have large Sharon blocks separating from the rest of the platform. Abundant overturned recumbent cross beds are present - some of the world's best developed and best exposed examples. The mechanism by which crossbeds get overturned seems straightforward (unidirectional shear by fluvial currents), but the cause is not clearly understood - some cohesive agent may be required? Someone suggested biomats. Some of the scour pits in this area seem to have fairly steep margins - perhaps whatever cohesive agent was responsible for simple deformation of crossbeds was also responsible for overly steep, stable margins of depressions/chutes/channels/scours.

I found this in the Cypress swamp in central Florida, at the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge on Mud Lake Road.

"Saururus cernuus has been used as a sedative and a poultice for tumors by early

settlers in North America, and for various wounds and ailments by different Native American

tribes (Phytochemical Database 2002), so it may still be used as a folk or herbal remedy.

Saururus cernuus contains lignans and neolignans, which have been shown to inhibit growth of

tumors, to suppress the central nervous system and to exert other physiological effects of

medical interest (Tutupalli et al. 1974, Rao and Alvarez 1982, Rao and Alvarez 1985, Rao and

Reddy 1990, Rao and Rao 1990), though chemicals derived from Saururus cernuus are not

currently being used for medical treatment. However, it was reported that Saururus cernuus is

the only natural product discovered since the 1950’s with neuroleptic properties (i.e., a

substance used to treat psychosis). Reserpine, synthesized from Rauwolfia serpentina in the

1950’s is used to treat hypertension and for the synthesis of antipsychotic agents (Alvarez

1981)."

DNA synthesizers can chemically synthesize or “print” DNA sequences. As this is still costly at present, it is usually carried out by specialized companies and sold as a service to universities and research institutions. This has had a serious side effect: the companies decide which DNA to synthesize—and which not to synthesize. There is an unofficial “black list” of potentially harmful and banned DNA sequences shared by these companies—officially for biosecurity reasons. “BLP-2000” is now developing prototype DNA synthesizers that print only blacklisted DNA sequences. However, because these prototypes are still error-prone, they repeatedly produce mutations in the physical DNA sequences. Printing out DNA from the “black list” also raises an ethical and social dilemma: Should it even be possible for the general public to print “forbidden” DNA? Or is it better to stop DIY DNA synthesis in the name of biosafety?
