The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is a historical mosque in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey and the capital of the Ottoman Empire (from 1453 to 1923). The mosque is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior.
It was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Like many other mosques, it also comprises a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. While still used as a mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque has also become a popular tourist attraction of Istanbul.
The design of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque is the culmination of two centuries of both Ottoman mosque and Byzantine church development. It incorporates some Byzantine elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. The architect has ably synthesized the ideas of his master Sinan, aiming for overwhelming size, majesty and splendour, but the interior lacks his creative thinking.

There's a plethora of camera gear review sites on the internet these days, many are click-bait sites in masquerade.
Some sites review "absolute" lens quality on an optical bench with a single consistent sensor while other sites test lenses on the latest camera bodies the lenses were designed for. Different pros and cons but it is important to know the difference.
Total system output makes the most sense since the lens can't take photos on its own and generally can't be used optimally on mounts it was not designed for. Comparing lens quality across different generation camera bodies however is meaningless as many review sites do not update their reviews with the newest camera bodies.
Synthesizing lens quality down to a couple of numbers can also be very misleading, especially when it comes to Zooms.
The lack of consistency in approaches in reviews can get very confusing.
End of the day, best to exercise patience and not buy any gear on release, wait for the opinions of real users (not those on cameramakers' payroll) after using the gear under field conditions.

Completed in 2013, the newly designed sections were conceived by the architects Caruso St John and included a total of nine new galleries, with reinforced flooring to accommodate heavy sculptures. A second part was unveiled later that year, the centrepiece being the reopening of the building's Thames-facing entrance as well as a new spiral staircase beneath its rotunda. The circular balcony of the rotunda's domed atrium, closed to visitors since the 1920s, was reopened. The gallery also now has a dedicated schools' entrance and reception beneath its entrance steps on Millbank and a new archive gallery for the presentation of temporary displays."

Crossed-eyes 3D (stereoscopic) viewing: View the two photos cross-eyed until a third image appears in the middle, which will be in stereo 3D. The brain nicely synthesizes a composite image with realistic depth and sharpness. Then put your two hands in front of your face to cover the photos on the left and right so only the middle one remains in your sight.

Development of autumn colors is a physiological process to withdraw chlorophyll, a green pigment, from leave to recycle the nitrogen in the molecule. When the green pigment is withdrawn, other photosynthetic pigments appear. The yellow was there all summer, the red pigments are synthesized in fall.

El Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia, conocido simplemente como la Sagrada Familia, es una basílica católica de Barcelona (España), diseñada por el arquitecto Antoni Gaudí. Iniciada en 1882, todavía está en construcción (noviembre de 2016). Es la obra maestra de Gaudí, y el máximo exponente de la arquitectura modernista catalana.
La Sagrada Familia es un reflejo de la plenitud artística de Gaudí: trabajó en ella durante la mayor parte de su carrera profesional, pero especialmente en los últimos años de su carrera, donde llegó a la culminación de su estilo naturalista, haciendo una síntesis de todas las soluciones y estilos probados hasta aquel entonces. Gaudí logró una perfecta armonía en la interrelación entre los elementos estructurales y los ornamentales, entre plástica y estética, entre función y forma, entre contenido y continente, logrando la integración de todas las artes en un todo estructurado y lógico.
La Sagrada Familia tiene planta de cruz latina, de cinco naves centrales y transepto de tres naves, y ábside con siete capillas. Serpentinite (or Serpentine) is a metamorphic rock composed predominantly of serpentine group minerals formed by serpentinization of mafic or ultramafic rocks. The ancient origin of the name is uncertain; it may be from the similarity of its texture or color to snake skin. Greek pharmacologist Dioscorides (AD 50) recommended this rock to prevent snakebite.
Serpentinite is formed by near to complete serpentinization of mafic or ultramafic rocks that are hydrated by carbon dioxide-deficient sea water that is pressed into the rock at great depths below the ocean floor. This occurs at mid-ocean ridges and in the forearc mantle of subduction zones.
The final mineral composition of serpentinite is usually dominated by antigorite, lizardite, chrysotile (minerals of the serpentine subgroup), and magnetite (Fe3O4), with brucite (Mg(OH)2) less commonly present.
Most of the chemical reactions necessary to synthesize acetyl-CoA, essential to basic biochemical pathways of life, take place during serpentinization. Serpentinite thermal vents are therefore considered a candidate for the origin of life on Earth.

My last photo of the Kathakali series.
The noble character ( a God) with the green makeup and the evil character (a Demoness) with the dark makeup. In this photo you can see the elaborate makeup and costumes that are typical of a Kathakali performance.Those who have expressed their surprize at makeup being applied in a prone position can probably appreciate why it is done so.:-)
Kathakali is a traditional form of Indian classical dance and one of the oldest theatre forms still practised.It is a "story game" genre of art , distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up and costumes of the traditionally male actor-dancers.It is native to and almost entirely practised by the people of Kerala, the state at the south-western tip of India.
The roots of Kathakali can be traced back to at least the 1st millenium CE.
The term Kathakali is derived from the words "katha" meaning story or conversation and "kali" which means performance or play.The traditional themes are folk stories,religious legends and ideas from the Hindu epics and Puranas.Like all classical dances of India, a Kathtakali performance synthesizes music, vocalists, choreography and hand and facial gestures which express ideas and emotions.
A Kathakali repertoire is an operatic performance involving actor-dancers in the front supported by musicians and vocalists.Typically all roles (even the female ones) are played by male actor-dancers.
Traditionally a kathakali performance is long ,starting at dusk and continuing through dawn with breaks for the artists. Modern performances are shorter. The stage is mostly bare with only a few drama related items.The front of the stage is adorned with a huge brass lamp (kalivilakku) with its thick wick sunk in coconut oil.When there was no electricity this lamp provided the light for the night performances when the actor-dancers would gather around it.
Of all the classical dances, Kathakali has the most elaborate make-up and costumes consisting of head dresses, vividly painted faces and masks.It typically takes hours to prepare a kathakali troupe for a play.
The make-up follows an accepted code that helps the audience identify with the characters.The colours which are made from natural ingredients are used denote different characters.For eg.The colour Pacha (green) with brillint coral lips potrays a noble character ,Thaadi (red) denotes an evil streak, Kari (black) is the code for forest dwellers, hunters, demons etc.
The actors speak a sign language where the word part of the dialogues is expressed through hand gestures ( mudras) while emotions and moods are expressed through facial and eye movements.

I step into the darkness with California sun-stained eyes, and I'm overwhelmed in the most transient way... I step into the darkness and hear the sonorous dripping of the water echo as we walk in.
I stand in the LA underground and see spider webs, and my tilted reflection staring back at me in semi-evaporated puddles. I don't even dare to dodge them because even the little rush of water around my toes is cleansing enough for this to feel like catharsis. As the back wash of water stagnantly stares at me, I notice I lose sight. Brendon and Kyle run ahead, I hear their voices bouncing down the walls of the aqueduct. I take in a deep breath again, like I had so many times out there. Even though the water is washing away the dirt of the canyons, the mud of the mountains, the snow from Mt. Baldy, when I breathe like this, I still feel it all inside of me. But this time, the water leaves it's own mark.
I take my shoes off and leave them in the dry spots, and splash and splash and splash, jumping up and down so I can really feel the blood of the LA underground between my toes. The city baptizes me one last time, and washes away the past. It's a new year with new friends and new experiences, new challenges, new places to go, new hearts to mend and bridges to cross. I can't help but feel like these little tiny puddles come from hurricanes, and tsunamis, and that the water is really up to my knees, because that's how strong this is to me.
It's my last day and I'm leaving. It's my last day and it's all being washed away. But now I am cleansed to be brighter, to be stronger. I take one more deep breath and I walk out one last time, the bright light of California's winter sun beaming into my irises.
I remain barefoot for hours after, just to remind me of the sullen earth beneath my feet.

from our last day in LA in the aqueducts. for some reason they struck such a chord with me, in that dank underground. It filled me with adventure and I didn't even care that there were spider webs or dirty puddles or if it smelled a little weird or that the contrast between the dark and the super bright entrance hurt my eyes. It just felt like home, for some reason.

La Sagrada Familia tiene planta de cruz latina, de cinco naves centrales y transepto de tres naves, y ábside con siete capillas. Ostenta tres fachadas dedicadas al Nacimiento, Pasión y Gloria de Jesús y, cuando esté concluida, tendrá 18 torres: cuatro en cada portal haciendo un total de doce por los apóstoles, cuatro sobre el crucero invocando a los evangelistas, una sobre el ábside dedicada a la Virgen y la torre-cimborio central en honor a Jesús, que alcanzará los 172,5 metros de altura. El templo dispondrá de dos sacristías junto al ábside, y de tres grandes capillas: la de la Asunción en el ábside y las del Bautismo y la Penitencia junto a la fachada principal; asimismo, estará rodeado de un claustro pensado para las procesiones y para aislar el templo del exterior. Gaudí aplicó a la Sagrada Familia un alto contenido simbólico, tanto en arquitectura como en escultura, dedicando a cada parte del templo un significado religioso.

Encountered this fellow at a Civil War encampment. Was almost eerie how naturally he seemed to assimilate into the role of a Confederate soldier, circa 1865. It went way beyond the uniform. There was just something about his demeanor that synthesized with his physical appearance and laconic manner. And the eyeglasses were the perfect historic accouterment. I ran into many people that day. Some simply appeared to be actors in costume. Then there were time travellers such as this, and for just a moment I felt like Mathew Brady.
The Very Large Array in New Mexico has several different configurations based on the size of the aperture they need to synthesize by the combination of signals received to all of the 27 telescopes. This configuration happens to be the most compact, which simplifies the job of capturing the technological majesty of the array. Set in the richly clear skies of this part of New Mexico, the array benefits just as much from being in a remote, limited electronic noise location. Better keep my camera from emitting any signals! This image was taken late in the day, in the run up to some night sky shooting as part of the 2018 Festival of the Cranes in nearby Soccorro. Cheers!

Happy Earth Day -- #Plastic is a great theme for this #MacroMondays. The first Earth Day was in 1970 -- I remember it well as I was just graduating from the University of Pittsburgh. It is hard to think of plastics not being a part of our world, but these artificial polymers have really only been around since Bakelite was synthesized in 1907. As materials for our civilization, they are both blessing and curse. A blessing because their utility for so many things is almost limitless. A curse because they are made from fossil carbon sources and because they resist degradation so very well. Everyone is familiar with the plastic in the oceans -- but as they slowly degrade, they become part of our food chain. Humans throughout the globe are now born bearing plastic in their bodies.
This macro was an easy one -- the plastic tape dispenser on my desktop. A little abstract, nice curves, that blue center. And it will likely be present on Earth for centuries in some form or another, even if recycled into something else. Great theme to think about the environment and our world. The downside of plastics can be solved. HMM!
Osorno, one of the most beautiful volcanoes of Chile, and the Lhanquihue Lake.
Its figure ideally synthesizes what a volcano is. Its unique colors, as well as its slopes and a summit that remains covered with white, unspoilt snow almost 365 days a year.
Standing almost 60 kilometers to the Northwest of Puerto Varas, it reaches a height of 2,661 meters above sea level. Its great height makes it visible from every point in the district of Osorno, even in some places on Chiloé Island. Therefore, it represents an impressive and typical postcard of the region. With its classical blackish dark green color and ornamented with arms of eternal snow, its presence attracts the thousands of tourists who visit it every year. Looking at its summit is mesmerizing and it is the destination for various climbing excursions.
The volcano may be ascended from Puerto Kloker, Ensenada and Petrohué. Ascents take approximately 6 hours and, in most cases, groups are organized to climb in the company of a local guide. It is advisable to wear thermic clothes, sunglasses, sun protection, water and, of course, comfortable climbing footwear.

Heliconius charithonia, the zebra longwing or zebra heliconian, is a species of butterfly belonging to the subfamily Heliconiinae of the family Nymphalidae. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1767 12th edition of Systema Naturae. The boldly striped black and white wing pattern is aposematic, warning off predators.
The species is distributed across South and Central America and as far north as southern Texas and peninsular Florida; there are migrations north into other American states in the warmer months.
Zebra longwing adults roost communally at night in groups of up to 60 adults for safety from predators. The adult butterflies are unusual in feeding on pollen as well as on nectar; the pollen enables them to synthesize cyanogenic glycosides that make their bodies toxic to potential predators. Caterpillars feed on various species of passionflower, evading the plants' defensive trichomes by biting them off or laying silk mats over them.

Stratford Butterfly Farm is a visitor attraction in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. A leafy tropical environment is simulated inside large greenhouses. There are numerous free flying butterflies, a few free flying birds, a pool containing fish, and running water. There are also insects and spiders living in glass displays.

This 2009 composite image of the Tycho supernova remnant combines X-ray and infrared observations obtained with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, respectively, and the Calar Alto observatory, Spain. It shows the scene more than four centuries after the brilliant star explosion witnessed by Tycho Brahe and other astronomers of that era.
The explosion has left a blazing hot cloud of expanding debris (green and yellow) visible in X-rays. The location of ultra-energetic electrons in the blast's outer shock wave can also be seen in X-rays (the circular blue line). Newly synthesized dust in the ejected material and heated pre-existing dust from the area around the supernova radiate at infrared wavelengths of 24 microns (red). Foreground and background stars in the image are white.

Just did a comparison of the 1970 OG U.S. Gloversville Pressing vs The 2017 Europe 1/2 speed master and have to say the OG was much more dynamic with a much better high end than the 2017 reissue, remastered version. Not sure what source material was used during the remaster at Close to the Edge studio but if tape, it was 47 years old at the time. Glad I was able to find a clean OG!

I’m posting 25 variations on the theme of “industrial warehouses”, as generated in different styles by the AI text-to-image program “Midjourney”. Midjourney uses state-of-art artificial intelligence models to synthesize images based on text prompts. Given where this technology is now, it will be even more amazing 3-5 years from now. To see how different words regarding style or artist or designer influenced the generated image, I selected a single theme. I’m a supply chain guy, so warehouses seemed an intriguing choice. In this image, style = "Kengo Kuma".
