Getting this close to these bizarre birds was quite an experience. I was lying on my belly in the mud in an urban public park (you can't get decent bird photos without looking like a goof), watching some distant horned grebes run through their display "dances". They went down for a dive, and I peeled my eye away from my lens for just long enough to see three of these ones converging on my hiding place.
