the synchronicity of my receiving this box containing cricket's ashes on the same day i started reading Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife is a little eerie. of course i've been praying to my dead cat since the night she died, b/c i'm not sure if i believe in god or gods or any of that, but i know i believe in the goodness of the moops.
when i write my memoirs, this chapter is going to be called "Start Drinking or Get Saved."

Synchronicity was the theme of the weekend. Lambert got his leave again, my practice on Saturday & Sunday was canceled, Matt and Carin got back from abroad, and our spur of the moment trip to Bloomington couldn't have gone better if we planned it. And as an EXTRA ADDITIONAL BONUS we got to see Jon & Lauren in Indianapolis when we were heading home. CombiChrist was playing there on Monday night, and we were passing through, so everything was perfectly aligned for old friends to reunite.

Synchronicity, it ain't just for hippies anymore! This loose belief system, which I associate with Jim's old massage therapist and the West Coast, is all about unrelated, random events occurring together in a meaningful way. Thank you Wikipedia! My reason for posting this is that a totally random "hey, cute dude on facebook" click lead me to the radical work of fiber artist Steve Frost whose awesome blog lead me to the information about this exhibit (among other things) and helped inject some momentum into a body of work I'm starting. Yippee!

This book is the first collective volume specifically devoted to the multifaceted phenomenon of intensification, which has been traditionally regarded as related to the expression of degree, scaling a quality downwards or upwards. In spite of the large amount of studies on intensifiers, there is still a need for the characterization of intensification as a distinct functional category in the domain of modification. The eighteen papers of the volume contribute to this aim with a new approach (mainly corpus-based). They focus on intensification from different perspectives (both synchronic and diachronic) and theoretical frameworks, concern ancient languages (Hittite, Greek, Latin) and modern languages (mainly Italian, German, English, Kiswahili), and involve different levels of analysis. They also identify and examine different types of intensifiers, applied to different forms and structures, such as adverbs, adjectives, evaluative affixes, discourse markers, reduplication, exclamative clauses, coordination, prosodic elements, and shed light on issues which have not been extensively studied so far.
