The now abandoned Van Dyke-Harper Commercial District. Abandoned since the early 2010s, this neighbourhood was once one of Detroit’s East Side bustling areas. Former landmarks have been (literally) laid waste over the years. Landmarks such as Kettering High School, The Eastown Theatre, Club UBQ, United Shirt, as well as a few restaurants that we’d go to for breakfast before class, Commonwealth Bank, as well as several grocery stores and confectioneries, a skating rink as well. The posts depicted date back to the early-to-mid 1950s (they stopped working in the early 1990s), these were the original parking lots for consumers at the time (prior to White Flight). Can anyone notice where the parking meters used to be? They’re evidently no more, but growing up in the 1980s (and early 90s), these were quite the money-grabbers, and if you didn’t get to the meter straight away before the time expired, you had a ticket on your windshield, and God forbid you forget to pay it (which would result in your car being “booted”). But seeing this brings back both memories and heartbreak. Whether or not we’ll see these posts restored or remade, I have no idea, but I can only image the stories they could tell (if that’s even remotely possible).

Geometric shapes make for interesting photos. Trapezoids, triangles, straight lines, and a vanishing point. Most compelling is symmetry. This photo has a line of symmetry running down the center of the photo. The left side is a mirror image of the right. Symmetry is pleasing because it’s balanced. It fulfills expectations. We would all like a balanced world. however it seldom is. When it happens a tingle of excitement sparks inside.

BEST VIEWED LARGE!
I just live around the corner from this building and when I saw that rainbow I knew it would be perfectly placed. I had to take two images of this and merge them together in PS because of the size of this place, with the contrasts between those fabulous blue lines and perspectives with that double rainbow!
A fascinating geometric reflection of an outside stair case in Manchester caught my eye. The colours are genuine tints in the glass building that I have pushed and toned in Nik's Color Efex Pro 4 to add further interest. No local adjustments were made. I hope you enjoy.
" The Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta) is one of the smaller species of hawker dragonflies...It can be found away from water but for breeding it prefers still or slow-flowing water and can tolerate brackish sites...The flight period is from July to the end of October..."
" This insect was rare in the United Kingdom until the 1940s when it began migrating from the continent in large numbers...It continues to do so and is now a resident breeding species throughout England and Wales..."
