Tyrone Wright (aka Rone) is one of Australia’s best known and most successful street artists. His new exhibition, “Time”, includes 12 installations inside one of Melbourne’s most iconic buildings, the Flinders St railway station.

The building has been empty for some time, and Rone has transformed a forgotten wing, including the magnificent ballroom into an amazing exhibition taking visitors back to post-World War II Melbourne.

The building used to be used for many different purposes, classrooms, offices, industry and these and much more are remembered in the exhibition.

The exhibition employed a core team of 5-10 people, with up to 120 Victorian creatives and professionals working on the project. Rone has worked on the project for three years. Callum Preston was set builder director and Carly Spooner the set decorator.

Of course the installations are adorned with Rone’s world famous ethereal portraits of his muse, model Teresa Oman, and these combine with meticulous details in the sets, along with the ambience created by original music that makes this a magnificent experience.

Adrienne and I visited last Thursday, these six images complete the series from this visit, but I have booked another ticket for the exhibition in mid December, so I’m sure there will be a few more photos then.

With all those plugs to place in and out to connect people and allow the switchboard operator to listen into calls. Rone - Time Exhibition at Flinders Street Station. rone.art/

"A fictional history that transports audiences to post-WWII Melbourne, Time is inspired by an era when European migrants powered the city’s booming manufacturing industries. A vignette of mid-century working-class life and an ode to the faded yet enduring beauty of this forgotten place, Time captures the spirit of the city’s industrious past while offering glimpses of the station’s role as a once-glorious hub of work, learning and social life.

Twelve installations, each room adorned with Rone’s haunting signature murals, the artist and his team have created an immersive, multisensory installation that audiences will remember for time to come."

This was taken on the circular road that wraps around Parliament House in Canberra. It was a small booth that only had a filing cabinet and this old phone. It was like a relic of the cold war, except it's probably still connected to a switchboard somewhere...

I was tempted to try the door and have a look inside, but with all the armed guards everywhere, I decided not to take my chances!

Still the late afternoon sun really showed up the phone as a subject, so I had to take a photo from a distance anyway.

... operator, please !

"Switchboard Susan, won't you give me a line?

I need a doctor, give me nine, nine, nine.

When I picked up the telephone,

I fell in love with your ringing tone."

The Golden West Hotel (also known as the Workingman's Hotel) was built by San Diego entrepreneur and civic leader John D. Spreckels, using the architectural firm of Harrison Albright, in particular John L. Wright, a son of Frank Lloyd Wright. Designed in 1913, it was built in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego with sculptures by Alfonso Iannelli at the corner. The hotel was designated a historical landmark by the San Diego Historical Resources Board in 1974. In 2007 the original telephone switchboard was still in the lobby.

The 1884 Ditson & Co Building located at 18th St and Broadway in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. The building was converted into apartments in the 1990s.Before the building was built there were there were three buildings and two stores on the lot it occupies.Mr Oliver Ditson,a music publisher, wanted to build a five-story handsome red brick building in their place. He had the old buildings razed and hired an architect,Mr.George Washington Pope to design the structure.Mr Pope, who was from Boston, was a 60-year old man known as a builder who went into the profession late in life. The building was designed in the Romanesque Revival style. When it was completed leasing was made available.A surprising tenant,a switchboard company, took up the top floor. One evening in July of 1893 after the building was emptied of workers, six female operators stayed on to work. One of them saw smoke rising up from a window behind her and she began to scream. When the other girls saw it,they also screamed. All grabbed their hats and fled the building exiting on 18th St.No one bothered to use the pull station to summon the fire department. Some firemen saw the girls running and then saw the burning building. They called for a second brigade and the fire was contained in an hour. There was $50,000 dollars in damages.daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2015/11/the-ditson-co-bldg...

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linton_Apartments:

Linton Apartments (also known as Le Linton) is an apartment building in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located at 1509 Sherbrooke Street West in the Golden Square Mile neighbourhood of Montreal.

Le Linton was designed by Samuel Arnold Finley and David Jerome Spence. Its construction began in 1907 and the building was completed in 1908. It has 10 floors and is 31.63 metres tall. The building is considered to be of beaux-arts architecture. Its facade is made of terracotta and the ornamentation is made of baked clay.

Montreal's largest apartment building upon completion, the Linton appealed to well-to-do tenants as a substitute for a large house requiring servants, which were becoming increasingly difficult to find, at the time. The building offered such services as a dry cleaner and caterer, and featured such then-modern amenities as an elevator, central heating, electric doorbell, telephone switchboard and dumbwaiter.
