spirits are worn thin
in this atmosphere we are in
the canvas of life has been stretched to the end
lovely colors are fading away
but come what may
this is what i will say.
we artists have a choice we have a voice
we have a heart that is not a part of this
our souls are old
our rhythms in sync
with what to do and what to say
let us be a part of the heart of love
where truth and happiness abound and are found
in our art and with one voice make that choice
in darkness of today let us all say
love is everywhere.
take the hardness of the times
make no use of it's signs
death and strife
are not our life
The Common Eiders and 2 Emperor Geese were on the same beach when I took this photo and all were very skittish. You couldn't even look at a Common Eider before it bolted into the ocean. They are heavily hunted up there so they view us humans as threats. I noticed this with all the eiders, ducks and swans in Nome. They were very unlike the waterfowl at home that we can walk right up to.
*Disclaimer - I am not at all against subsistence hunting of the Inupiaq. I fully support their cultural and hunting rights which are necessary for survival. I am just making a factual comment of what I observed.
A lone tree stands out on the plain as we look back to Burringurrah (Mt Augustus). It reflects the effect of the summer heat here.

This Peregrine Falcon unleashed a relentless attack on the American Avocet. Dive bombing it over and over again. For some reason the Gull got involved also. The Avocet finally escaped by landing in a pack of gulls and submerging itself under water.

Stopped for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Overcast sky's on the flat plains of Texas. Watched these sparrows looking for food, while also being sheltered from the icy wind.
Some storms have been coming through the past few days. No problem for the moss. They prosper under circumstances that might be difficult for anyone else. And it looks so wonderful to see so many different kinds so close together.

A lone Buffalo makes his way through the snow and sub zero temperatures in the Lamar valley of Yellowstone NP.
Survival is a strong feeling even in nature,
this rose caught in the mist
of a late autumn snowfall & cold snap,
managed to still stand for now ...

We all have to eat. When you find yourself on the menu you can wish a "bon appetit," run or fight. Excluding the diner, Nature rewards only two of these choices. The Red-tailed hawk and the Bullock's Oriole.
This lone tree in the countryside near me doesn't have much to offer the quartet of turkeys as it is focused on trying to make it through another Minnesota winter. The older I become, the more I realize each of us are surrounded by people whose main goal from day to day is simply survival. The battles may include financial challenges, relationship conflicts or health problems but in those 3 categories alone most people will find a hook to hang their hat. Many of us in these categories spend a lot of energy trying to camouflage them from others.
