Een verslaggever vaart in een klein bootje door een ondergelopen stad, vertellend over de verwoestende effecten van een grote overstroming – het is een beeld dat je wel kent van het nieuws. Auto’s en persoonlijke eigendommen dobberen in het water, en alleen bomen, elektriciteitspalen en daken steken nog boven het water uit terwijl de bewoners (hopelijk) zijn gevlucht. Het is een heftige, ontregelende ramp, die steeds vaker voorkomt.
Wanneer je door de installatie Surface Tension van Tom Biddulph en Barbara Ryan vaart, komt zo’n rampenscenario opeens heel dichtbij. De kunstenaars hebben een stuk van de beroemde grachten van Amsterdam getransformeerd tot een verdronken straat: de spookachtige, oplichtende silhouetten van meegesleurde auto’s, lantaarnpalen en verkeersborden steken boven het water uit, als een spookachtig visioen van wat er zou kunnen gebeuren.
Dat Biddulph en Ryan grafisch ontwerpers zijn is aan het kunstwerk overigens goed te zien: het is een ruimtelijke lijntekening, gemaakt van licht. Het delicate ecosysteem op onze aarde heeft zich gedurende miljarden jaren ontwikkeld en wordt nu verstoord door de mens. Het kan daarom ook geen verrassing zijn dat de natuur ons leven op haar beurt ontregelt. Met de (door ons veroorzaakte) klimaatverandering smelt het ijs en stijgt de waterspiegel, en daarmee het risico op verwoestende overstromingen – ook in Nederland. Gelukkig is het zo ver nog niet in Amsterdam, maar laten we Surface Tension beschouwen als een kleine waarschuwing...

The Ring Road (Route 1) goes around the outskirts of Iceland and offers an amazing amount of versatility and beauty in its landscapes.
These were some amazing lava fields on the Ring Road in between Vik and Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The mossy rocks were beautiful and incredibly soft to the touch. We were completely blown away by the diversity of landscapes on this drive.

Despite the fact that Iceland is made purely of lava, only about 12% of the country’s surface is classified as lava fields. By that we mean post-glacial surface lava in its original state, not eroded by glacier ice, rivers or other natural forces.
The oldest lava fields date back to the end of the ice age, others are only a few years old and still warm under the surface.
