As part of its support to the Government of Guinea in its fight against child malnutrition, the Government of Japan, through UNICEF, has funded the project: "Responding to the challenges of multiple crises on child malnutrition in Guinea through integrated nutrition and WASH interventions."
This project, with a budget of approximately 1.14 million US dollars (USD), aims to reduce mortality and child health problems associated with the worsening nutritional emergency in the Labé and Mamou regions of Guinea. It covers 13 communes in the Labé region and 12 communes in the Mamou region, providing interventions that combine nutrition with improved access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation. This complementary approach strengthens institutional and community capacity for rapid, effective, and sustainable treatment and prevention of severe acute malnutrition.
"It is a great honor to inaugurate the water supply system at the Bantignel Health Center. Thanks to this joint project between Guinea, Japan and UNICEF, we have been able to meet an important need for basic human security in 25 communities in the Labé region. By improving the nutrition of the youngest children and access to drinking water, we are strengthening the capacity of these localities to be more resilient and provide a foundation for the population to thrive," said His Excellency Mr. KATO Ryuichi, Ambassador of Japan to Guinea.
In Guinea, approximately 350,000 children suffer from acute malnutrition, 100,000 of whom are severely malnourished. Poor water quality, lack of access to adequate sanitation and poor hygiene practices are responsible for many water-borne diseases that have a significant impact on children's health. A child who dies from diarrhea often has underlying malnutrition, making him or her more susceptible to this infection. Each episode of diarrhea also worsens this malnutrition. Diarrhea is a leading cause of malnutrition in children under five.
"Children need a healthy environment and enough quality food to grow and thrive," said Félix ACKEBO, UNICEF Representative in Guinea. "The water, hygiene and sanitation sector, by promoting access to a healthy environment and encouraging good hygiene practices, plays a critical role in ensuring good nutrition and health for children. The support of the Government of Japan to the Government of Guinea, through UNICEF, enables us to provide a strategic response to combat child malnutrition and improve access to water, hygiene and sanitation services for the population of Guinea".
Thanks to these interventions, approximately 164,700 people have benefited from nutritional support to date. This includes the screening of 66,459 children aged 0-59 months, the treatment of 2,379 severely malnourished children with nutritional inputs, and the multiple micronutrient supplementation of 10,140 children.
417 community actors were trained and 184,034 people were sensitized on good infant and young child feeding practices. Approximately 291,400 people were educated on hand washing and breastfeeding practices and supported to access water, hygiene and sanitation services. 100,000 people now live in a hygienic environment, and 2,500 people now have access to sanitary facilities, including a supply of drinking water to prevent infection. Finally, 2 schools with a total of 1,100 students, including 650 girls, now have sustainable access to drinking water.
Indirectly, at the end of the project, about 2 million people in Labé and Mamou will benefit from better coverage of nutritional interventions, whether curative or preventive, and improved access to drinking water and sanitation.
Girls make up over 70% of supported children.
