LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. — The 79th Sustainment Support Command officially opened its new 53,000 square-foot headquarters facility on Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos Jan. 12.

Hosting fellow Soldiers, civic leaders and community members was Maj. Gen. William D. Frink, Jr., 79th SSC commander.

"The structure behind me... is proof positive of U.S. Army commitment to our Army Reserve Soldiers," said Frink. "Our new home represents $29 million worth of construction in Southern California. This is tangible recognition of the Army Reserve as an indispensable force to our Nation."

For a sustainable future, Corps projects like this one are designed using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program. LEED is how the U.S. Green Building Council rates a project for its design and achievement in categories like sustainability, water efficiency, energy conservation and design innovation.

"We demonstrate care for our community by ensuring we are good stewards of our environment," said Frink. "The building behind me is LEED Gold. It optimizes energy performance and was built with regional material to cut down on our carbon footprint. It has low water consumption and uses both renewable energy and recycled material."

Even the covered parking lots are an energy feature. Covered in a photo voltaic system that, according to Edward Desmond of Cox Construction of Vista, Calif., will produce 375 KVA [kilovolt-amps], generating enough power to offset the building's consumption on the Los Alamitos power grid.

The 79th SSC commands approximately 20,000 Army Reserve Soldiers and civilians across 19 states located west of the Mississippi River. By all accounts, this state-of-the-art facility is well equipped to enhance mission readiness and family well-being for such a geographically dispersed unit.

"I think it helps to build camaraderie," said Ann Nacino, Youth Services specialist. "It helps to build that connection with the Soldiers and civilians that support the command full time."

"This building tends to be a beacon for family members of all different services," said Sherry Rallis, Family Readiness community outreach assistant. "We really enjoy, as staff, collaborating with each other and welcoming family members and Soldiers that now have direct access to us, all in the same building."

I've tried both of their beers now and while they're both fairly tasty the lack the body of many of beers I now prefer to drink. With that being said, probably a great beer to match with food (lighter flavours and citrus notes)

their website says: "Two Birds Golden Ale is brewed using ale, wheat and Vienna malts. It is bittered with New Zealand Southern Cross hops while Motueka and Australian Summer hops are used for aroma. Motueka contributes melon and citrus aromas and flavours, while Summer contributes spice and apricot notes"

“We cannot do our mission without you and your troops supporting the command,” Maj. Gen. David Hogg, commander, U.S. Army Africa (USARAF) told visiting Army Reserve representatives who attended the first USARAF - United States Army Reserve(USAR) Sourcing Conference at Caserma Ederle.

US Army Africa’s Reserve Component Division invited the US Army Reserve Command along with its major units to work on processes that will improve how the Army Reserve can support military to military training engagements in Africa.

Months went into planning this event that brought Army Reservists’ from across America here to Italy. The results included substantive changes to the manner USAR policy relates to its support of military - to - military training engagements overseas. Between the changes to policy and bringing the Reserve representatives together, US Army Africa received verbal support toward 12 training engagements on the African continent in FY 2011.

Col. Bruce Stillman, USARAF Reserve Component division chief, credited the USARC staff with the “re-vision” of how USAR supports overseas missions. He went on to say “the Warrior-Citizens of the US Army Reserve have shown their commitment to US Army Africa through their commitment to support these events, and our partners in Africa stand to benefit from the knowledge, professionalism and expertise of America’s citizen-soldiers well into the future.”

Brig. Gen. David Elmo, USARAF deputy commanding general, who chaired the conference said, “This was a great event that achieved measurable results associated with new growth and processes in the Army Reserve’s commitment to US Army Africa. What this means is we now have better and more expedient access to the great Soldiers within the Army Reserve’s institutional training units, its large medical and logistical force structure, and the military intelligence specialists within the USAR. I am just so pleased that the USAR is taking aim at its ability to support US Army Africa and I am looking forward to seeing USAR units supporting military - to - military training events in Africa next year.”

In attendance at the conference were key planners from US Army Reserve Command, 84th Training Command, 108th Training Command, Military intelligence Readiness Command, 807th Medical Command, 3rd Medical Command, and the 75th Battle Command Training Division.

The United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough is supporting relief work in Beirut following the devastating explosion in the city on August 4. The massive blast in the city’s port area caused at least 180 deaths, 6,000 injuries and left an estimated 300,000 people homeless (at the time of writing).

Lebanon is part of the Diocese of Jerusalem which has been engaged in a partnership link with Dublin and Glendalough for almost five years. Dublin and Glendalough is sending €10,500 to All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Beirut via the Diocese of Jerusalem. Of this, €10,000 will support the work of the Anglican parish while €500 will assist Armenian Church families in the city.

The money had been earmarked in the Diocesan Council for Mission budget for the development and deepening of the inter-diocesan partnership. However, following the explosion the decision was made to give it directly to the parish in Beirut and the Armenian Church community.

All Saints’ Church is located about a mile from where the blast took place. Archbishop Michael Jackson has visited the parish. “I have visited the parish three times. I have conducted a seminar-sermon on the Five Marks of Mission for our Come&C project and book. I also met Armenian Christians who came to the service. The parish is deeply involved in humanitarian work and of course its own members will have their own needs in the current circumstances,” he said.

“All of us are aware of the fragility of human life, its survival and its integrity. My prayer is for all the people of Beirut that they will find comfort at this time and that human dignity and respect will flourish in a situation where peace is a virtue and grace is neighbourliness.

In Dublin & Glendalough we pray with our sisters and brothers in solidarity, in hope and in love,” he added.

The Rector of All Saints’ is the Ven Imad Zoorob, Archdeacon over Lebanon and Syria. The parish serves the Arabic and international communities and after the explosion he has assessed the status from the two resident congregations as well as damage to All Saints’ and the diocese’s complex at the Near Eastern School of Theology (NEST).

Describing the explosion as a “very traumatic experience” for the community of All Saints’ Church, Archdeacon Zoorob said that in addition to the economic strain members had suffered property damage including to doors, windows, furniture, cars and other household items. “We are thankful that the injuries are minimal and do pray for a speedy recovery,” he said.

There was some damage to the church from the blast. “The church building received considerable damage from shattered glass doors in the fellowship hall and also the upstairs vestry window was damaged. However, we are thankful that the sanctuary has remained intact. In fact, not a single window in the sanctuary was broken. We hope to meet there again soon, but that will depend on several factors, including COVID-19,” he explained.

The All Saints’ Church offices are at NEST which experienced damage to windows and doors. The clean up is well underway and Archdeacon Zoorob is working with the Diocese of Jerusalem to support the members of the church whose property has been damaged.

In a letter to the Archbishop of Dublin, Archbishop Suheil Dawani, Archbishop in Jerusalem, expressed his thanks for prayers and support. The diocese has already sent out an appeal to its partners and they are grateful for the positive response. “The recovery from this disaster will take many years, especially in light of the current pandemic and the already difficult economic situation in Beirut. Because of your prayers and the generous support of our many partners, All Saints’ will be able to serve as an outreach centre for a good number of those who have been heavily affected by the blast,” he said.

On Sunday January 10, 2016, the Epiphany Agreement was signed in St George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem by Archbishop Jackson and Archbishop Dawani. The agreement commits to developing a link relationship of equal partners between the Diocese of Jerusalem and the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough which is sustainable, practical, effective, mutually supportive and mutually enriching. The aim of the link is to strengthen mission in the church communities in both dioceses, to increase awareness between the dioceses of their solidarity in the cause of Christ, to respect and learn of and from each other’s cultural heritage and to enable the world to recognise more clearly God’s mission.

Hundreds of people and vehicles created an hours-long traffic jam on State Street into the Chicago Loop from 26th Street near the South Loop. It was an inspiring event with a diverse group of people including a large showing of Caucasians who peacefully affirmed that black lives matter in a system that disproportionately harms the latter.

Hygiene promotion sessions were conducted by teachers and volunteers, who were trained for this purpose. One student, 11-year-old Maung La explained how he used to suffer regularly from diarrhea, which at times was so serious that he believed he would die. Through the hygiene promotion sessions he learnt how to prevent diarrhea and is sharing this information with his siblings, as well as his friends and neighbours.
