📜 The western spur of the Esquiline Hill was known in ancient times as the Fagutal. It is here that we will begin to explore the immediate surroundings of the Baths of Trajan. The urban condition here was largely a continuation of the Subura neighborhood with the notable exception being the higher terrain and, therefore, more valuable land therein. The Fagutal Hill of the 4th century CE included lavish residences, alongside proto-Christian basilicas and the Augustan-era Porticus Liviae. According to Pliny the Elder's Natural History, "...at Rome, in the Porticus Liviae, a single vine, with its leaf-clad trellises, protects with its shade the walks in the open air..." Just as a vine splits into multiple offshoots, so too are these insights one and the same, but ultimately strewn between two adjacent parcels of the Fagutal Hill.

📜 Imagine the hustle and bustle of daily life for the vast majority of the Eternal City's ancient inhabitants. Most went about their business tending to their homes, venturing to the city markets or taking part in public gatherings at a local temple or basilica. Those more prone to vice might have spent their time and hard-earned sestertii gambling or in a local lupanar (pleasure house). Odds are, most would not have needed to venture beyond the Ancient Roman neighborhood of Subura to take part in any such activities. In fact, it was the extreme density and array of amenities packed within this largely disreputable quarter of the city where large percentages of the city's one million residents were once packed.

Side by side, wisteria kanzashi, one for bjd and one on a comb . :) Hand dying a tiny, tiny petal is really hard, btw, but it turns out so cute.

Hand made by me. I can make these out of silk, strings, small wires, and clips/combs, not to mention very careful amounts of artist glues. ;)

📜 The so-called Trajan's Market was once a sprawling, multi-level complex along the slopes of the Quirinal Hill. Its multitude of shops, offices and administrative buildings made for a bustling and densely packed backdrop to the spacious Imperial Fora below. Whereas the grand forums were built in the most opulent materials available, the structures of Trajan's Market were built of "less noble materials" and are, consequently, almost completely preserved to this day, as it now houses The Museum of the Imperial Forums in Trajan's Market.

📜 In a complete inversion of the historical timeline, the very first Imperial Baths complex (or "Thermae" as the Romans called them) to be designed for SPQR just so happens to be the very last one built in the Eternal City. The fourth century CE marked the twilight of the Western Roman Empire: a time when they were still capable of constructing monumental complexes, but were long past their prime, as evidenced in the Baths of Constantine which were adorned using statuary stripped from other monuments.

Update on the #Davenport #putzhouse with template by @lucyf7b I covered the raw edges of cardboard with strips of packing paper. The stucco texture was created by spreading pre-mixed stucco repair with sand.

I dreamed solutions during the night of adding shaved chocolate paper shingles, snowflake fence and roof iron work, and candy cane window casings with pressed cookie medallions. Still have not figured out the door and smaller windows yet. Look for #updates on the #creativeprocess

--------

This indulgent project was therapeutic. My first cardboard #putzhouse sculpture made with a house pattern and tree tutorial by @lucyf7b and adapted with many embellishments of my own.

A good friend asked, "Will it be for sale?" The answer is NO for many reasons. Artists constantly undervalue their work. This piece took me many days to create for a #zoom #Christmas #familycelebration

There are many delightful artists and designers out there. I reccomend finding an artist whose story compels you to invest in them. @jillrenaedesigns takes 30-40 hours to hand make all of her houses. That's $3.95/hr for her highest price house on etsy. What do you deserve to be paid per hour?

Beautiful red hair pins, hand dyed and folded into leaf shapes, one petal at a time.

📜 Atop the western slopes of the Quirinal Hill, there once stood an imposing complex of sacred precincts. From its terraced vineyards, connected over considerable elevation via winding corridors of switchback ramps, this impressive structure was built under the emperors of the Severan dynasty during the late second century CE, and it is the subject of today's DESIGN Insights.

Handmade by me.

These are little flowers I made as a gift for a friend of a friend! The winter chrysanthemum is a delightful little flower-- so poofy and charming.

The purple bellflower is a lovely understated outer fabric, and the inner fabric features some stunning kimono fabric (yuzen painting style) that peaks out. Hope she liked it!

This is my first painting, done in 1999. The man and lady are created with a single line for each one. 16 x 20 inch acrylic on canvas painting. Custom made box frame also by me. Sold.

🙌 The Forum of Trajan was, by far and away, the largest and most opulent of the Imperial Fora. Designed by Apollodorus of Damascus, its architecture fused precedent with groundbreaking novelties, including the Basilica Ulpia and Trajan's Column.

In fact, I first stumbled upon the design for Trajan's Column all the way back in 2020, and have finally applied it here. Once again, that which is done well enough, is done quickly enough!

️ SUBURA MEDIA - Design Insights

📜 You'd be forgiven for thinking - given the title of Subura Media - this portion of the densely populated ancient neighborhood of Rome would fall between the previously covered minor and maior. While you'd be correct in the topographical ordering of the three, Subura Media comes out on top as the one with the largest area, which is especially fitting given it is the final subsection of my Phase II design efforts focused entirely on Subura.

📜 Subura Minor picks up where we left off in the fairly dense neighborhood of the ancient city, with a comparatively smaller slice of land area. While smaller geographically, this locale was considerably outsized in its role as a growing administrative center during the later years of the Roman Empire. As the imperial sphere of influence shifted east toward Constantinople, the office of the Urban Prefect grew beyond its managerial purview over the city and its territories, to that of de facto governor during the emperors' increasingly prolonged absences. As a result, the new administrative state expanded to encompass most surrounding buildings across an area of roughly 46,000 square meters; a far larger chunk of the nondescript domūs and insulae of Subura than are represented in this section alone.

The Rome of antique yesteryear was a dense, sprawling and often haphazard cityscape spread over more than just the fabled Seven Hills. "Dense" and "sprawling" are ways in which most of the urban core of Imperial Rome could be described, including even the grand imperial edifices such as the Imperial Fora, most recently covered in the past five DESIGN Insights posts.

"Haphazard," on the other hand, was once the daily reality for the living conditions of the majority of the city's residents. Discover why as we explore the Via Lata in today's DESIGN Insights post!

Today, we examine the preeminent imperial thermae built before all other such complexes in the Eternal City. The Baths of Titus set the standard for what would become ever larger thermae complexes built during several succeeding imperial dynasties. When it came to the art of imperial propaganda, the Roman emperors could always be counted on to outdo their predecessors. As such, the eponymous emperor Titus sought to break the mould of what had previously been more disparate Roman baths scattered throughout the city, and establish a consolidated precinct within which all expected amenities were contained and laid out symmetrically, including frigidaria, tepidaria and caldaria (cold, tepid and hot bathing rooms).

📜 The addition of the gladiatorial training grounds in this week's Design Insights marks the culmination of the digital design for Phase II of SPQR! Since July, there have been seventeen Design Insights posts highlighting new areas of the Eternal City each week. All told, this work represents roughly 7.7 million square feet over dozens of meters in elevation and consists of more than 107,000 individual bricks; all of which will inevitably result in a landscape diorama of over 211,000 bricks once built and integrated with Phase I.

This post marks the 50th entry into the Design Insights series on my Patreon! Available to all top-tier, Corinthian patrons, these entries have extensively documented nearly every project I have digitally designed - and later, built - since 2021. I like to think of each post as a chapter in a never-ending story and a glimpse at the nearest I've come to summarizing the thoughts racing through my head as I work through any given project.

The subject of this post, therefore, is reflective of my case-by-case approach to each and every project. Represented here (from right to left) are the plaza of the Pantheon, the Templum Matidiæ and the Templum divi Hadriani. An assortment of rectangular precincts is nothing new here in the Campus Martius region. Rather, it is the order in which each was designed and the meticulous care in material / color curation which define this next and penultimate chapter of Phase III design insights posts.
