Design Insights XLIII
One of the oft-spoken dividing lines when it comes to Roman history is "after the fire." Depending on the locale, the date mentioned immediately after would be different. Tales of the fire of 64 CE infamously - and spuriously - tell of Nero fiddling while he watched the city go up in flames from the safety of his palace window. When it comes to the Campus Martius region and my present Phase III design efforts, however, it is the fire of 80 CE which more clearly marked the turning point. Before the fire of 80 CE, public monuments were few and far between among private villas with sprawling horti: after, the monuments were rebuilt in even greater splendor while much of the private land was repurposed for the construction of publicly accessible temple complexes.
Among the densest areas of redevelopment during the aftermath of the conflagration is the subject of today's DESIGN Insights post. In it, we will discover two large precincts, both built in quick succession and comparable in size to any of the Imperial Fora. One was built to reinforce the legacy of the imperial family, while the other strengthened the image of Rome as the undisputed center of the Mediterranean world.

Design Insights XLV
What do you see when you close your eyes and imagine the ancient past? Visions of golden ornamentation and impossibly captured poses rendered in crisp statuary are likely to abound in your mind's eye. But what can you glean of the background; the setting in which all the trappings and fine objects are placed? You might not have a specific landmark in mind, but it's likelier than not that the surrounding architecture assumes a platonic likeness, which can be distilled to those two most primal elements, the circle and the square.
The Pantheon in Rome is one of the most enduringly iconic landmarks of antiquity and is certainly the most well-preserved large building of its time. It has succeeded on several fronts: most obviously in its remarkable durability, but also in its unrivaled structural innovations, and most importantly, I would argue, its transcendent harmonizing of the circle and the square. We find these ideal forms at the very foundation of every found object, every work of art and every architectural plan across every culture in recorded history.
It should come as no surprise then, that the Pantheon is at the very top of my own list of all-time favorite structures ever built! My relatively reticent approach toward superlatives never stood a chance when I walked through the ancient doors of the portico for the first time in 2019. It's the quintessential interlocking of the two most basic elements of design, echoing across time and a lofty interior vault, that does it for me. I can think of no better way to introduce my interpretation of the Pantheon in the latest Design Insights post, available now to all my patrons (not just the usual Corinthians).

Handmade by me.
I finally finished making the kimono for this monster high doll clawdeen ~
She's wearing my handmade kanzashi , which is a tsumami zaiku art that uses tiny squares of silk to make flowers. It's a Japanesecraft that uses old Japanesetechnique to do.
This one was an etsy commission , so of course custom orders welcome ;) ❤️
Hand dyed by me using painterly techniques. ;) Each petal starts out as a square of white silk... it's interesting dying such small petals-- the canvas is much smaller than my fingernails. XD

📜 The year was 13 BCE. Lucius Cornelius Balbus, proconsul in Roman Africa, was arriving in quite peculiar fashion to the dedication ceremony for his newly completed theatre in Rome's Campus Martius area. The means of arrival happened to be by boat. Normally, disembarking would occur roughly three-quarters of a kilometer south of the Theatre of Balbus. On that day, however, the Tiber had flooded quite significantly, sending its overflow deep into the former and occasionally recurring floodplain of the Fields of Mars.

The Rome of antique yesteryear was a dense, sprawling and often haphazard cityscape spread over more than just the fabled Seven Hills. "Dense" and "sprawling" are ways in which most of the urban core of Imperial Rome could be described, including even the grand imperial edifices such as the Imperial Fora, most recently covered in the past five DESIGN Insights posts.
"Haphazard," on the other hand, was once the daily reality for the living conditions of the majority of the city's residents. Discover why as we explore the Via Lata in today's DESIGN Insights post!

I love making my goldfish with their little lilypad. It's so cute and they look so happy together.
I fold each little scale from a silk square, and then dyed each one in variations orange, red, gold, and yellow.
A charming design for yukata.
📜 In a complete inversion of the historical timeline, the very first Imperial Baths complex (or "Thermae" as the Romans called them) to be designed for SPQR just so happens to be the very last one built in the Eternal City. The fourth century CE marked the twilight of the Western Roman Empire: a time when they were still capable of constructing monumental complexes, but were long past their prime, as evidenced in the Baths of Constantine which were adorned using statuary stripped from other monuments.

PORTICVS OCTAVIÆ ️
Design Insights XXXIX
📜 Welcome to the Portico of Octavia! This next slice of Ancient Rome comes in the form of a literal wedge-shaped subsection. Like the Augustan namesake of this monument, these works were overlaid onto the urban fabric of the Eternal City, just as their patrons' versions of history were grafted onto the founding myths of the Roman culture.
No sooner had we discussed an ephemeral form of Augustan propaganda in last week's Design Insights covering the Circus Flaminius, do we now find ourselves confronted with physical architecture attesting to this broader movement toward imperium. It bears repeating just how emblematic the Campus Martius is of this period in Roman history. This legacy is part of what informed my decisions on where to draw suitable boundaries for Phase III.

📜 The addition of the gladiatorial training grounds in this week's Design Insights marks the culmination of the digital design for Phase II of SPQR! Since July, there have been seventeen Design Insights posts highlighting new areas of the Eternal City each week. All told, this work represents roughly 7.7 million square feet over dozens of meters in elevation and consists of more than 107,000 individual bricks; all of which will inevitably result in a landscape diorama of over 211,000 bricks once built and integrated with Phase I.

📜 The Sette Sale, or "Seven Halls," represent the interconnected corridors which formed the large cistern for the Baths of Trajan. In reality, however, the title is a misnomer as the cistern contained nine halls which would once have been filled with water from a branch of a nearby aqueduct. Nevertheless, this impressive structure had a capacity of 8 million-plus liters by some estimates, was built contemporaneously with the imperial thermae it fed, and was located slightly uphill some 75 meters from the baths themselves.

️ SUBURA MEDIA - Design Insights
📜 You'd be forgiven for thinking - given the title of Subura Media - this portion of the densely populated ancient neighborhood of Rome would fall between the previously covered minor and maior. While you'd be correct in the topographical ordering of the three, Subura Media comes out on top as the one with the largest area, which is especially fitting given it is the final subsection of my Phase II design efforts focused entirely on Subura.

🙌 The Forum of Trajan was, by far and away, the largest and most opulent of the Imperial Fora. Designed by Apollodorus of Damascus, its architecture fused precedent with groundbreaking novelties, including the Basilica Ulpia and Trajan's Column.
In fact, I first stumbled upon the design for Trajan's Column all the way back in 2020, and have finally applied it here. Once again, that which is done well enough, is done quickly enough!

📜 The western spur of the Esquiline Hill was known in ancient times as the Fagutal. It is here that we will begin to explore the immediate surroundings of the Baths of Trajan. The urban condition here was largely a continuation of the Subura neighborhood with the notable exception being the higher terrain and, therefore, more valuable land therein. The Fagutal Hill of the 4th century CE included lavish residences, alongside proto-Christian basilicas and the Augustan-era Porticus Liviae. According to Pliny the Elder's Natural History, "...at Rome, in the Porticus Liviae, a single vine, with its leaf-clad trellises, protects with its shade the walks in the open air..." Just as a vine splits into multiple offshoots, so too are these insights one and the same, but ultimately strewn between two adjacent parcels of the Fagutal Hill.

📜 Subura Minor picks up where we left off in the fairly dense neighborhood of the ancient city, with a comparatively smaller slice of land area. While smaller geographically, this locale was considerably outsized in its role as a growing administrative center during the later years of the Roman Empire. As the imperial sphere of influence shifted east toward Constantinople, the office of the Urban Prefect grew beyond its managerial purview over the city and its territories, to that of de facto governor during the emperors' increasingly prolonged absences. As a result, the new administrative state expanded to encompass most surrounding buildings across an area of roughly 46,000 square meters; a far larger chunk of the nondescript domūs and insulae of Subura than are represented in this section alone.

A Breath Of Fresh Air:
Hello everyone! How was your Thanksgiving?
Mine was very blessed and I got a chance to catch up with a lot of my family members. The food is always a plus to large family gatherings like these but being able to catch up with those I don’t often get a chance to connect with is always enjoyable. Another year completed and a month until a different group comes to visit for more fun.
The Art Side of Things:
I am going to add a new feature to my site updates. I want to dedicate a section to artists I have had recent discussions with and am overall impressed with their work. I love supporting other artists’ work and I feel like everyone need a place to be spotlighted. You can always send me a message if you want to be featured here or if you want to be removed from being featured.

Site Updates:
Today, I added a few graphics to my “About Me” page to make it ‘pop’ more instead of having text everywhere. I will probably change this again at a later date but so far it’s acceptable. What do you think of it?
Closing:
Hope to catch back up with some of you a bit later. Take care of yourselves and …

📜 Imagine the hustle and bustle of daily life for the vast majority of the Eternal City's ancient inhabitants. Most went about their business tending to their homes, venturing to the city markets or taking part in public gatherings at a local temple or basilica. Those more prone to vice might have spent their time and hard-earned sestertii gambling or in a local lupanar (pleasure house). Odds are, most would not have needed to venture beyond the Ancient Roman neighborhood of Subura to take part in any such activities. In fact, it was the extreme density and array of amenities packed within this largely disreputable quarter of the city where large percentages of the city's one million residents were once packed.

Side by side, wisteria kanzashi, one for bjd and one on a comb . :) Hand dying a tiny, tiny petal is really hard, btw, but it turns out so cute.
Hand made by me. I can make these out of silk, strings, small wires, and clips/combs, not to mention very careful amounts of artist glues. ;)
