Woke up briefly at 4am today, thought about the moon. Got up and quickly took a freehand photo. Then went back to sleep.
I shot this supermoon on 7 April this year and was pleased with the definition of its surface features. For those who don't know, this phenomenon occurs when a new moon coincides with the moon's closest point to the Earth.
A few shots of the Super Moon rising.
A little smoke haze on the top of the moon made for an interesting photo.
I took these from my backyard and where I live in east Tennessee we have severe drought conditions and numerous forest fires around. It's very hazy and smoky and stinks like a wood fire. Pretty bad at time. The only good thing is if you want a deep orange moon or sunset you got it. Monday night when the moon was still pretty high in the sky it was deeper orange than this at times.
I did use Lightroom to increase the contrast a bit. The moon was a little dim from the smoke so the photos lacked contrast so I had to tweak it a bit to get it to look like what I was seeing.

According to PlanIt app, we only have 4 chances from today in the next 10 years to see full moon appear with link with GGB tower from this special Thread & Needle spot.
We were so lucky to have a clear sky when the supermoon was rising right at sunset.

Soooo many photographers shooting the supermoon today. I wish I had a bigger zoom lens to get a bit closer. hehehe
Hope you all have a wonderful week.

Dalkey moonrise on May 7th 2020. Last superman of the year this month. Shot from Sandycove looking east towards Dalkey. Low cloud spoiled the view initially but it still worked out reasonably.
Went to Boundary Bay near Vancouver Canada to see moon rising. I got a couple of surprises. it was orange like a fireball! This is the day after the 100% full moon (see previous upload) the day before it was light the next day it was very dark at moonrise! Oh and very cold with a brisk wind!

At the time the images for this photo mosaic were taken the Moon was at perigee, the time in its orbit where it is closest to Earth. At this particular perigee, the Moon was 357,303 km from Earth, and appeared 7.6% larger than its average size. The Moon had not quite reached Full Moon phase; that occurred about 10 hours later, on the morning of May 26, after local moonset, and while the total lunar eclipse was entertaining people to our West.
This mosaic was created from 5 images of the Moon. The image of the Moon through my telescope is larger than can fit in a single image frame on my camera, so a mosaic was assembed to create a full image. Each image in the mosaic was created from a stack of 9 photos, the best 35% of 25 photos taken.

We'd gone to Attenborough Nature Reserve to try to see a murmuration of starlings but they didn't show up in great numbers; the supermoon emerging from behind the clouds just before it got too high in the sky was a pretty good second best, though ;-)
The Algonquin indian tribe named this August full moon "Sturgeon Moon" because of the large fish caught on the Great Lakes during this month. It's the last Supermoon of the year.
----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------
SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️
16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)
16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)
1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)
7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)
1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)
Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!
So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

It’s the first full Moon of astronomical summer and the second supermoon of the year
But why is it called the 'Buck Moon'? Well, by July, it’s usual to see bucks with full-size antlers in preparation for the autumn breeding season. They’ll need to be in top fettle to compete with other bucks for the best females.
As such, the Algonquin tribe named it the Buck Moon.
Other names for the July full Moon include the Berry Moon, Raspberry Moon and Thunder Moon.

This was last night's Supermoon over Ballycotton Island in East Cork. I posted a quickly processed, low resolution version on Twitter (I'm @carrigman) shortly after taking the shot and it had a phenomenal response. So much so that I ended up trending on Twitter in Ireland. Several of my Twitter contacts asked me for a copy of the photo and I promised to upload a high res version here so that anyone can download it and get it printed if they wish. People are free to use it for whatever purpose but for personal use only please. Here's how to download it:
1. Right click on the photo.
2. Click on "original" in the "View all sizes" field - this will fill the screen with the image.
3. Right click on any part of it and click on "save image as".
4. Choose a folder for storing it e.g. My Pictures or My Documents and title it "Supermoon".
You can now print it yourself, send it away to get it done, or put it on a memory stick and have it printed locally.
I'm not altogether happy with the photo despite its popularity on Twitter and Facebook. The image is a bit soft and I blame the atmospherics for that as the moon was rising through a slight haze. A much crisper photo of the moon would have been possible as it climbed higher into the sky but I wanted to include a landscape with it. It is a straight shot, by the way - the moon has not been imported into the photo nor has it been re-positioned in any way.

The brightest Supermoon of the year.
It's the pink blooms at this time of year that gives this Supermoon it's name.

This morning marked the last supermoon we'll see in 2020. This is a single shot at ISO 500, 1/60sec, f/7.1. You need a fairly fast shutter speed to capture the moon at extreme telephoto focal lengths like this. The flag on top was blowing slightly in the wind so I had to ensure my shutter speed was fast enough so it didn't blur. Even though I'm on a tripod, I like to have the Image Stabilizer turned on as long as my shutter speed is shorter than 1/30th sec. For shots like this, you have to be very precise in planning your location and timing. I did my scouting the day before and used Photopills and TPE to double check my work. Which apps do you like to use for shot planning?
This morning dawned very cold and clear, another frost I think. But there was a lovely supermoon. This is a photoshop creation of a morning photo last week with the moon today just before dawning.
