Superflat is a postmodern art movement, founded by the artist Takashi Murakami, which is influenced by manga and anime.[1] It is also the name of a 2001 art exhibition, curated by Murakami, that toured West Hollywood, Minneapolis and Seattle.[2] The term is used by Murakami to refer to various flattened forms in Japanese graphic art, animation, pop culture and fine arts, as well as the "shallow emptiness of Japanese consumer culture."[3] A self-proclaimed art movement, it was a successful piece of niche marketing, a branded art phenomenon designed for Western audiences.[2]
In addition to Murakami, artists whose work is considered “Superflat” include Chiho Aoshima, Mahomi Kunikata, Yoshitomo Nara, Tatsuyuki Tanaka, and Aya Takano. In addition, some animators within anime and some mangaka are considered Superflat, especially Koji Morimoto (and much of the output of his animation studio Studio 4°C), and the work of Hitoshi Tomizawa, author of Alien 9 and Milk Closet.
Lolicon art is satirized by works such as those by Henmaru Machino. These works are an exploration of otaku sexuality through grotesque and/or distorted images. Other works are more concerned with a fear of growing up. For example, Yoshitomo Nara’s work often features playful graffiti on old Japanese ukiyo-e executed in a childish manner. And some works focus on the structure and underlying desires that comprise otaku and overall post-war Japanese culture.
Murakami is influenced by directors such as Hideaki Anno.[4]

There aren't many artists in the world more popular than Takashi Murakami. He started his own new Japanese pop art movement, "superflat", which mixes anime and manga with corporate branding, commercialism and mass production. Names like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring come up a lot when people talk about him. He does everything from keychains to 30-foot tall statutes. The big stuff sells for millions and millions of dollars. His work has been displayed outside Rockefeller Center and in a fifteen-room exhibition at the Palace of Versailles. A couple of years ago Time put him on their list of the 100 Most Influential People.
But his work, ridiculously cute and commercial, can also get kind of twisted. He chose the name "superflat" in part to reflect what he calls the "shallow emptiness of Japanese consumer culture." And he has no problem fucking with the usual inane slickness of corporate art. “I always emphasize that the power of the dark side exists even in cuteness," he told SWINDLE Magazine a few years ago. Some of his characters are grotesque. And his most famous and controversial statues are of disturbingly young anime figures ejaculating and lactating all over the place.

“Foxy Lady” Spraypaint on Silver Momi Paper. 30x15” Edition of 50.
Seattle is the home of Jimi Hendrix, and I wanted to do a little homage while starting the next series of ukiyo-e exploration.
The Kitsune is a mythical fox creature from Japanese folklore, a trickster character that can change from animal to human, often in the form of a beautiful woman. Seems very appropriate for the Hendrix song.
Going for the whole psychedelic poster thing. Really looking forward to seeing how far I can take it with my variations.
