An impromptu trip to Chicago to see my favorite artist's work--Takashi Murakami's The Octopus Eats its Own Leg exhibition (2017). It was, without question, the best show I've ever seen.

Painting
A band of youths (2020) is a series of paintings that expresses modern-day issues on identity and consumerist culture using vivid, illustrative, flat art techniques. My practice takes inspiration from cartoons and imported Japanese anime and manga from my childhood, and the Superflat art and street art community, including artists Yoshimoto Nara and Barry McGee.
The paintings consist of portraits of characters each carrying an exaggerated, distressed facial expression that portray anxiety and hidden emotions. The pink-blushed nose and cheeks of each character, which is a common feature of chibi (small) characters in Japanese anime, depicts our vulnerability and our adult desire to remain protected and childlike. The work addresses the issues on consumerist culture, and presents the theme of rejection and isolation through the use of discarded objects such as shipping cardboard boxes and soda bottles as fundamental support.

Takashi Murakami (村上 隆) is a prolific contemporary Japanese artist who works in both fine arts media - such as painting - as well as digital and commercial media. He blurs the boundaries between high and low art. He appropriates popular themes from mass media and pop culture, then turns them into thirty-foot sculptures, "Superflat" paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines or phone caddies. From September till December 2010, Murakami exhibited some of his works at the Palace of Versailles in France, filling 15 rooms with his sculptures.

The fanciful decoration on the top of the horse barn represents Annie Oakley's trademark trick, shooting a hole through the middle of the Ace of Hearts. This barn was very run down but has since been restored to perfect condition!
On the way back from Colorado, we made a short stop in North Platte, Nebraska, to check out Buffalo Bill's house and ranch. It's a really cool little place to stop, so I highly recommend it! Not to mention that North Platte is a cool town and has a lot of great old stuff to look at, especially a lot of cool old neon Motel signs! Hope I can visit again someday, even though Nebraska is superflat and makes hillbillies like me cry.
Sergio Traverso Wine is committed to inspiring the artisans and craftspeople who make the world a more beautiful place to inhabit. From the unscrupulous counterfeiters of China's Dafen Painting City and their mechanical reproductions to the genre-suicide-bombing Superflats, Abstract Immpressionists, and Hyper-Minimalists, art is an integral part of our approach to gastronomy and viticulture. We play Handel for our grapes on the vine and Ravel for those in the barrel; we lined our wood-fired pizza oven with flawless ceramic recreations of Gauguin and Goya; we perform Oskar Schlemmer's Triadic Ballet in the aisles of our pickling cellars and a suspended version above our Lexan ham saunas; our chocolate-oolong infused caper loaves are read Huysmans throughout all 6 phases of their cayenne-honey glazing. We digress. We found an Enigma CD under the backseat of our company Wrangler and have been listening to it fucking nonstop for the last week. Remember the first time you saw the ocean or snow or the Seychelles from a G6? It's like that. So, we would like to formally invite Enigma to the Sergio Traverso Wine Winery to record their next album. We've constructed a studio and hired a team of engineers. We feel it is time to give something back. Sergio Traverso Wine. Completely Selfless. The chants are Gregorian but the grapes are timeless.

Gas lamp in Buffalo Bill's House.
I liked this house tour. The bottom floor is restored to original like when Buffalo Bill lived here, and the upper floors are a museum of Buffalo Bill memorabilia. It's self-guided and free, no stuffy tour guides or outrageous fees, or rules about not taking pictures. My type of place! :D
