Superb fairywren (Malurus cyaneus)
I've taken quite a few shots of these wrens in the past but never any that I'd been happy with. Finally, years later, I have a few shots that I am truly happy with ... feeling pleased :-)
I added the textured background only because it reminds me of the many paintings I have seen of this very iconic Australian bird and I wanted to give it that look ... otherwise, it would have just been a plain blue background.
The Superb Starling, native to East Africa, stands out amongst its avian counterparts with its resplendent plumage. Its feathers shimmer with a glossy combination of iridescent blues, purples, and greens, forming a tapestry of vibrant hues that seem almost too perfect to be real. The metallic sheen on its back is a captivating sight, contrasting beautifully against its striking black head and chest.
Found in various habitats across Kenya, from savannas to woodlands, the Superb Starling is a social species that thrives in small flocks. Its melodious song fills the air, creating a symphony of sounds that harmonizes with the rhythm of the African wilderness. These birds are known for their agility and aerial acrobatics, darting effortlessly through the skies, adding a touch of dynamism to their already captivating presence.
As an important member of the East African ecosystem, the Superb Starling plays a vital role in seed dispersal and insect control, making it a key player in maintaining the delicate balance of nature.

The Superb Starling, a Northeast African bird, uses cooperative breeding to raise its young. Both the male and the female take care of the offspring. Previous offspring may also assist in collecting nest material and feeding young, Ridges on their feathers interfere with white light to produce their metallic color. Known and loved by Australians and gift-shop-visiting tourists alike, Superb Fairywrens may be one of Australia’s most well-known birds. This charismatic species is as likely to be found in back gardens and botanical gardens as it is on vegetated roadsides throughout south-eastern Australia.
An immature male Superb Parrot was a nice surprise recently. Didn't realise what I had for a little while!
