A very good friend of mine enjoys sailing. I do too. But he loves sailing, and often scoffs at others who head for harbour when the weather turns foul. He can sometimes be heard saying, "that is the time when he likes to go out". He built his own 40' sailboat and constructed it to withstand the worst ocean going weather mother nature can deliver. My point is, the same way he enjoys sailing, I enjoy photography.
Often, creating images in rather inclement weather, can illicit a more attracting result. What is to be done when the colors of morning and evening are not present? What about a less violent atmosphere? Perhaps that is where the next challenge lies? There is enjoyment to be found creating when none of the typical elements are present. That might also be one area that draws us closer as a community to this endeavour.
I went to Powell River to see my lifer Black-tailed Gull. It is a bird I have always wanted to see. It was a really long day to get there and get back home but was worth every minute. He flew all the way from Asia, the least I can do is travel 6.5 hours and take 2 ferries to see him! He used to stay on a rock in the middle of the ocean that you had to have a boat to get to but today he flew right into town on the government dock allowing us to view him from land. I also got to see a pod of Pacific White-Sided Dolphins frolicking behind him. I rarely get to see dolphins so it was a special treat. This gull is really stunning. It is a 3rd cycle gull and he has beautiful pale eyes, white eye arcs and that unique yellow bill with black ring and red tip. Plus of course his conspicuous black tail band and white rump. He flew into the ocean once for a quick swim and it allowed me to see that. He really is very elegant with his dark grey back and wings and black wingtips. I'm really lucky I got to see him so close to shore today. This is the 422 nd bird I have seen in BC. This is the second rare Asiatic gull in BC right now as a Slaty-backed Gull was found a few days later but has not been relocated.
This is a heavy crop but wanted to post it anyways since it is such a special bird.
This is only the 3rd confirmed photo documented record for the province of BC. This bird is listed as a code 4 by the ABA.
Our last day from our mini-break on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Always love it here but our thoughts with those who lost their properties over the weekend in bushfires only 10km from where we were staying. Smoke filled the air around over the weekend but mercifully its all clear and the fires here under control for the time.
We were once again out enjoying dinner on the beach when my wife said, "we had better hurry, you will need time to setup." Noticing the sun was about to go down and knowing I wanted a shot on the pier, it was time to leave the beach. We loaded the car and made for the pier which was only minutes away. When we arrived, it was a new location for her and she asked if it was ok to enter the shot. "Yes, I am counting on it", I responded. She took her position at the end of the pier, gave that little body gesture needed to show it is a person and we waited for the magic.
I shot in landscape mode and took about 10 shots. Then I thought it best to take one in portrait mode for good measure. One and only one. Of the 11 shots, this was the best. The most simple, the most uncluttered, and the one that puts the attention on the sky, using the pier as the leading line. Except for the sky, it was very dark and the image illustrates that well.

We are lucky enough to be able to come to beautiful Peregian Beach on the Queensland Sunshine Coast a couple of times a month. Its a great antidote to the working week....

Just for you @ozzrod 😂😘 Nice and straight. Today was the first day there wasn’t a band of cloud on the horizon. A perfect sunrise.
Dicky Beach - one of our favourite beach days. Ocean temperature 80F December 17th. A long way to go for a swim. On the very right of the screen is Brisbane skyline - which is how far we drove to get to this beach.

The Story Of Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron"
After the turn of the century
In the clear blue skies over Germany
Came a roar and a thunder men had never heard
Like the scream and the sound of a big war bird
Up in the sky, a man in a plane
Baron von Richthofen was his name
Eighty men tried, and eighty men died
Now they're buried together on the countryside
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rolling out the score
Eighty men died trying to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany
In the nick of time, a hero arose
A funny-looking dog with a big black nose
He flew into the sky to seek revenge
But the Baron shot him down (Curses, foiled again!)
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rolling out the score
Eighty men died trying to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany
Now, Snoopy had sworn that he'd get that man
So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan
He challenged the German to a real dogfight
While the Baron was laughing, he got him in his sight
That Bloody Red Baron was in a fix
He'd tried everything, but he'd run out of tricks
Snoopy fired once, and he fired twice
And that Bloody Red Baron went spinning out of sight
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rolling out the score
Eighty men died trying to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany...
The shot was taken on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
No, not a photo of the Aurora, however, the long exposure on the cloud with the early morning sun striking it provides the similarity.
This was taken on an enjoyable early morning on the Sunshine Coast with fellow photographers Maxwell Campbell and Beth Wode.
There had been plenty of cloud around the night before and when we arrived here pre-dawn the skies were clear. Thankfully a bank of clouds made there way north to provide some extra interest above the horizon.
Many of the rocks and small channels were completely covered with foam from the churning ocean. This was not something I had seen here before, so it was a bit of a surprise.
"Ours is a psychological age rather than an institutional one. What use to be done for use by institutional structures and through ritual process, we now have to do inside ourselves, for ourselves. Ours is a culture of the individual rather than the collective."Robert Moore & Douglas Gillette (King, Warrior, Magician, Lover)
I am always amazed by the sheer variety of New World sparrows. These golden-crowned sparrows are, I think, particularly attractive little birds. Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada. D500_21501.NEF. Many thanks for views, comments and favourites.
This little dude was hanging out with us while we were fishing. Decided to lure him out with some pilchard. Pity none of the ones of him eating it turned out but this one’s not too crabby.
Point Cartwright, Qld, Australia.
This mornings sunrise was pretty spectacular, I went and shot this image at Pt Carty, It was a pretty busy morning with heaps of photographers out capturing the stunning colours.
This is an exposure blend as I couldn't get it all exposed correctly in a single frame.
Sky was Iso-400 | f16 | 15secs | 12mm

The Spangled Drongo has glossy black plumage, with iridescent blue-green spots (spangles), a long forked tail and blood red eyes. Spangled Drongos prefer wet forests, but can also be found in other woodlands, mangroves and parks. They tend to avoid more dense forest types and rainforest interiors. The Spangled Drongo is usually seen perched on an open branch or overhead wire, where it awaits a passing insect. Once seen, its prey is pursued in an acrobatic display, and is caught in the drongo's slightly hooked bill. The bird then returns to its perch to eat its victim. They are found along the East coast of Australia and extend as far North as China.
Good that they like wet forests because everywhere is wet around here at the time the photo was taken. Not much else to photograph except grey sky.
Hey,
Lake Weyba, Qld, Australia.
Milky Way and a dead tree in the lake.
Went to capture the Milky Way over this lake with a mate early last year, Only just seen this image and edited it finally, I really like how it turned out now.

Thanks for looking!
I decided to catch the sunrise at Point Arkwright today. It was the last day before rain was expected for the next week. I love the colour and the striping in the rocks. The rock pool added a few reflections. Very peaceful.

When I first looked at this shot, I thought that old green yacht had a much newer cabin (or whatever they call it) but then as I looked closer, I realised there are two tied up here on the Mooloolah River and the newer cabin is on an entirely different vessel. That makes the green one quite a hulk. Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast. It was raining back then too, we should have taken it as an ominous sign.
The surf beach of the Pacific Ocean and some rocks too are on the other side of the hill.
