The Sun Ra Arkestra (led by 87-year old legend Marshall Allen) returned to Cafe Oto this month for their third residency. I was lucky enough to see them for the fourth time. As you'd expect, they delivered an incredible performance. Hopefully these shots will show a little of the Arkestra's unique chemistry.

I’m kicking myself for not writing this guy’s name down – he was amazing on drums with the David Boykin Expanse at today’s Sun Ra Symposium at the Hyde Park Art Center.

Update: Danimal2006 has identified him as Mike Reed.

Sun Ra was a jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," musical compositions and performances. He was the leader of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. Although he was born in Alabama, and lived in Chicago and New York, he spent his final years in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood.
