Colusa National Wildlife Refuge has a wonderful viewing platform right at the beginning of the Auto Tour route. This platform affords the ability to get up close and personal and the lighting and reflections are marvelous. This Northern Pintail was sunbathing and drying his wings before taking off for where the waters are wetter.

Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio naevius) - 20241012-06
Small, stocky owl with large head and no neck. Pointed ear tufts are often raised. Varies in color from gray to bright rufous (reddish-brown). Intricate pattern is perfect for camouflage against tree bark. Yellow eyes. Active at night when they prey on small birds and mammals. More often heard than seen; listen for its descending whinny and longer trill. Roosts and nests in cavities, including nest boxes. Found in a variety of habitats with trees, particularly near water. We've been lucky with owls recently. This Screech-Owl has returned to a favourite day roost and was enjoying the warm sun on a cool autumn day. Surprisingly unbothered by the birders, photographers and others that peered through the branches, he just dozed in the sun.

Seal on the beach @ Dwarskersbos, West Coast, South Africa
All animals in Africa bite, but the safari bug is the worst.
I take pictures because I like it, not because I am good at it.
The world is like a book and those, who do not travel, only read the first page.
If you only visit 2 continents in your lifetime, visit Africa, twice.

Bella thinks that a cardboard scratching pad is a useful pillow on a sunny day. I'm glad it has a use - she's careful to scratch on the carpet so the cardboard doesn't get damaged!
