use the camera. Put it to your eye. You never know. There are lots of reasons, some of them even good, to just leave it on your shoulder or in your bag. Wrong lens. Wrong light. Aaahhh, it’s not that great, what am I gonna do with it anyway? I’ll have to put my coffee down. I’ll just delete it later, why bother? Lots of reasons not to take the dive into the eyepiece and once again try to sort out the world into an effective rectangle. It’s almost always worth it to take a look.

While it has only been raining here in the south of Sri Lanka for the last two days, we were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset on the beach a few days ago and walk in the wet sand towards the setting sun.
Society and nature: The rigid framework within which we operate is a guarantee that nature will not intrude. We have never been truly modern.
At first there were six, then in my second visit to the pond (two weeks later) there were five. By my last trip of the summer there were still five.
Try as I might, I just couldn't get all five in the frame. And of course I wanted them in the same focal plane (good luck with that). So here is a subset of four of them, with the leader in focus.
Based on the mother, they are ring-necked ducks. I was told that they are not common in the Adirondacks. But that might be because they breed on remote ponds and so are not generally seen/counted.
I have far too many images of these fuzz balls. Besides this one, I think I'll post one with three and then one with two. Stay tuned.
Handheld at 1/8 sec - a night shot of St George's Hall Poppy Installation - a subset of the massive display formerly on exhibition in London. I am amazed at how effective these little anti-shake cameras and lenses are nowadays. This is massively cropped from a landscape format including too many motion blurred passers-by. The new technology only fights movement of the camera not movement of objects within the image frame.
Heliconia, is a genus of flowering plants in the monotypic family Heliconiaceae. Most of the 194 known species are native to the tropical Americas, but a few are indigenous to certain islands of the western Pacific and Maluku. Many species of Heliconia are found in the tropical forests of these regions. Most species are listed as either “vulnerable” or “data deficient” by the IUCN Red List of threatened species. Several species are widely cultivated as ornamentals, and a few are naturalized in Florida, Gambia and Thailand. Common names for the genus include lobster-claws, toucan beak, wild plantains or false bird-of-paradise. The last term refers to their close similarity to the bird-of-paradise flowers (Strelitzia). Collectively, these plants are also simply referred to as heliconias. These herbaceous plants range from 0.5 to nearly 4.5 meters tall depending on the species. The simple leaves of these plants are 15–300 cm. They are characteristically long, oblong, alternate, or growing opposite one another on non-woody petioles often longer than the leaf, often forming large clumps with age. Their flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly colored waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts. The growth habit of heliconias is similar to Canna, Strelitzia, and bananas, to which they are related. The flowers can be hues of reds, oranges, yellows, and greens, and are subtended by brightly colored bracts. Floral shape often limits pollination to a subset of the hummingbirds in the region. 23499

Emerald Peak is a 2,701-metre (8,862-foot) mountain summit located in Yoho National Park, in the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, Canada. Its nearest higher peak is Mount Carnarvon, 1.7 km (1.1 mi) to the northwest. Both are part of the President Range which is a subset of the Waputik Mountains.Emerald Peak is visible from Emerald Lake, rising 1,256-metre (4,121-foot) above the northwest shore. The mountain's name was officially adopted in 1924 when approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada, in association with Emerald Lake, which in turn was named in 1900 on account of its color.
This is the boyhood home of Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States. This view shows the east front porch that served as the main entrance to the home.
The house was built in 1901 by W.C. Russell, sheriff of Blanco County. In 1913, Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr. paid $2,925 for the house and the surrounding 1.75 acres. During the presidential years, the home was used as a community center and public tours were offered. In December of 1969, Congress designated this home as part of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site. In the early 1970s, the National Park Service restored the home to its appearance during the mid-1920s, the teenage years of Lyndon B. Johnson.
The architectural style of the house is Folk Victorian, an architectural style employed for some homes in the United States between 1870 and 1910. Folk Victorian homes are relatively plain in its construction but embellished with decorative trim. Folk Victorian houses were built more commonly built for the middle class than the upper class. The style differentiates itself from other subsets of Victorian architecture (such as Queen Anne) by being less elaborate and having more regular floor plans.
Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973), also called LBJ, served as the 36th president of the United States from 1963-1969. A moderate Democrat and vigorous majority leader in the United States Senate, Johnson was elected vice president in 1960 and acceded to the presidency in 1963 upon the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. During his administration he signed into law the Civil Rights Act (1964), the most comprehensive civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction era, initiated major social service programs, and bore the brunt of national opposition to his vast expansion of American involvement in the Vietnam War.
Johnson City is the seat of Blanco County. The city was founded in 1879 by James Polk Johnson, uncle of Lyndon Johnson. Johnson City is located 47 miles (76 km) east of Austin, where the LBJ Presidential Library is located on main campus of the University of Texas.

Just as bird photography is specialized subset of wildlife photography; hummingbird photography is a specialized subset of bird photography. I use a specialized set-up consisting of 6 flashes, radio triggers and receivers for the flashes, bird feeders, umbrellas, shades and backdrops. And most importantly I have hummingbirds… because I have 14 feeders and have been attracting them for about 10 years. The hummingbirds drink up to 2 gallons a day during migration. Just feeding these birds is a chore.
So much to be grateful for. Happy Thanksgiving to my American Flickr friends.

After a very brief Hawaiian diversion, back to the round desert flora denizen with this image of a Pincushion Cactus. What's remarkable is that every one I've found has had three circular floral "subsets" each with tiny yellow flowers in a circular arrangement.
I don't know what cacti and succulents put out so many flowers in geometric patterns. I can only guess at why they put out huge showy flowers other than, since there is little or no scent, birds and bees are attracted to color and size. I'm probably wrong, but I haven't read any theories about size, shape, scent ... especially shape. (Perhaps round things store and retain more water and for longer periods of time.)
Alamo Square is a subset of the Western Addition neighborhood. Its boundaries are not well-defined, but are generally considered to be Webster Street on the east, Golden Gate Avenue on the north, Divisadero Street on the west, and Oak Street on the south. It is characterized by Victorian architecture that was left largely untouched by the urban renewal projects in other parts of the Western Addition. On a clear day, the Transamerica Pyramid building and the tops of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge can be seen from the park's center. San Francisco's City Hall can be seen directly down Fulton Street. A row of Victorian houses facing the park on Steiner Street, known as the painted ladies, are often shown in the foreground of panoramic pictures of the city's downtown area.
**The "Painted Ladies" and the "Transamerica Pyramid Building" the tall pointed building in the center, a landmark in SF, are seen in this photo.

If you don't know what CG is then here is some info on it.
CG Artists create 2D and 3D assets used in developing video games and digitally animated films. A CG artist's work usually revolves around finding balance between artistic sensibilities and technical limitations while working within a development team.
CG artists are typically skilled at creating both 2D and 3D digital art, and often specialize in one or more subsets of content creation such as: hard surface modeling, organic modelling, concept art painting, architectural rendering, animation, and/or visual effects. If the CG artist is a technical artist, they will usually also have programming skills such as shader and script writing, character rigging, and/or skill in languages such as Python, MEL, C++, or C#.[2]
