“Quilted Subscription” Created by Steph Routh, worn by Ashley Neufeld
Constructed from 2006 Economist issues, grocery bags, duct tape and a lampshade this frock carries with it tales of many trips to nearby grocery stores - whisperings of headlines such as "Bilanthropy", "The Search for Talent", "Green Dreams", and "The Incredible Shrinking Presidency". It brags graphs and photos and Britain according to Bagehot. The 2006 subscription, compliments of a gift from the creator's parents, has been three-hole punched, woven, clipped and pleated on wings of duct tape to greet you again in a form so different we doubt editor John Micklethwait could either recognize or credit this recycled and wearable incarnation.

I found an old sheet of stickers which had been used and noted that it was about the size of those magazine subscription cards which litter the floors of the bookstore each night. So I put two and two together with some live kashi action from Krispy who unknowingly co-laboured with me on this. And I like the happy accident of the word SCRIB which means to write, but also feels like scribble to me.
NOTE: Krispy's kashi usually remind me of thighs or the upper torso. However, these remind me more of mass egg-layings.

These days they're down to giving away a video camera with a 73% saving on the cover price to get a subscription!

When onDigital launched in the 90's, each subscribing customer got one of these. Now that the company is just a memory, so is this picture.

Sometimes businesses get out of hand. Subscription fraud is probably one of the more irritating ones I deal with.
Every month, I get these "Expiration Notices" and "Delivery Interruption Notices" for Smithsonian Magazine. I've been getting them monthly since 2004, and every single time I talk to them, they insist that there is absolutely nothing they can do to stop them. They claim they mark my account for no further notices, but the notices do not stop, and if I call back, I find the account is not marked.
They (both Palm Coast and the Member Services people at both Smithsonian and Air and Space Magazine) also deny that they are threatening to stop delivery, and that this is just "agressive marketing." I'm pretty sure I know what "Expiration Notice" and "Delivery Interruption Notice" are supposed to mean...
Problem is, I'm paid in full (and have been, for a long time) through December 2008.
April 2008 update: I'm still getting these. I could soon wallpaper a room with them if I kept them all.

The Victoria footbridge was opened by public subscription in 1898 in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, and replaced a ferry across the river.
The suspension bridge itself was manufactured by Alexander Findlay of Motherwell; cast iron lamp standards on terracotta plinths were made by Walter Macfarlane of Glasgow.
Walter MacFarlane set up the Saracen Foundry in 1850 behind the Saracen’s Head in Gallowgate. In the mid 1860s they needed to expand and moved to Possilpark. The company was taken over by Walter MacFarlane, a nephew, and became famous for decorative ironwork. After WW2, the company declined, but did produce K6 telephone kiosks for Post Office Telephones. They were taken over in 1965 by Allied Founders who were in turn absorbed into Glynwed. The run down works was demolished in 1967.
Alexander Findlay founded the Parkneuk Works in Motherwell in 1888 and the factory was operating until possibly the 1970s having been engaged in some major engineering projects.

Earlier C19 refronting of earlier house. The fine plaster ceiling on the 1st floor decorated with the Town Arms, Prince of Wales Feathers and initials C.P. was provided by town subscription after a visit by Charles, Prince of Wales in the earlier C17. 3 storeys. 1 window. Welsh slate roof with projecting bracketed eaves. Masonry party walls still retaining at east end moulded corbel of former 1st floor jetty. Timber framed front with plastered finish. Splayed bay window rises through 1st and 2nd floors. 3 light sash windows with glazing bars. Modern ground floor recessed shop fronts still retain later C19 shop fascia flanked by console brackets carrying urns. =========== Possibly a single storey medieval hall, heightened in the C17 and refronted mid C18. (M Laithwaite). The building retains its detached back block (former kitchen now No 68A) and gallery, both much altered, of "deux corps de batiments" type. 2 storeys and attics 1st floor with 2 paired windows. Welsh slate roof with bitumen asphalt sheets and gabled front. Masonry party walls of Devonian limestone rubble with traces of moulded corbel of former C17 jetty to 1st floor at west end. Party wall on west side much patched with evidence for blocked windows with timber lintols; rear block with 2 light wooden mullioned window with chamfered mouldings and stay bars. Plastered, timber-framed front. Architraved sash windows with exposed boxing and glazing bars to attic and 1st floor. Modern shopfront, but retains heavy boxed-out cornice of former C18 shop. Chamfered ground floor ceiling beams. Grade IIEarlier C19 refronting of earlier house.
