IN EXPLORE 30/05/2022 NEWCASTLE SUNSET CO DOWN WALK ABOUT ON 29-05-2022...............The name of the town is thought to derive from the castle built by Felix Magennis of the Magennis clan in 1588, which stood at the mouth of the Shimna River. This castle was demolished in 1830.[4][5] The town is referred to as New Castle in the Annals of the Four Masters in 1433, so it is likely that he built on the site of an existing structure.[6][7][8]
The Montgomery Manuscripts record that Newcastle was besieged and later captured by Sir James Montgomery of the Ards in April 1642 in the aftermath of the 1641 Rebellion (pp. 128–134). Prior to 1641 the Castle belonged to the Magennis', but after the rebellion the property was confiscated and granted to Robert Hawkins, great grandfather to Robert Hawkins who assumed the surname of Magill. The date 1588 was inscribed on a stone placed over the front entrance of the Castle, built by Felix Magenis. Newcastle passed from the Magills to the Mathews, and subsequently to the Annesleys. In the late 1700s the Castle was modernised by the Matthews and then the Annesleys, and rented by the Board of Customs for the accommodation of revenue officers. Around 1830 the castle was demolished and the 'Annesley Arms Hotel' was constructed within the original castle compound. The 3rd Earl Annesley built a new 'marine residence', called 'Donard Lodge' on the lower mountain slope above the town (it was demolished in 1966). St. John's Church was also opened on 'The Rock' in 1832 to accommodate the visitors and growing population in Earl Annesley's developing seaside resort.
The Newcastle fishing disaster occurred on 13 January 1843 when boats from Newcastle and Annalong set out for the usual fishing stations, and were caught in a gale. 14 boats were lost in the heavy seas including a boat which had gone to the rescue. Only two boats survived, the Victoria and the Brothers.[9] 73 men perished, 46 of whom were from Newcastle. They left twenty-seven widows, one hundred and eighteen children, and twenty-one dependents. A Public Subscription was raised and the cottages, known as Widows Row, were built for the widows and dependents.[10][11] A local song about the disaster says "Newcastle town is one long street entirely stripped of men"[12]
In 1910 Harry Ferguson flew a small plane across Newcastle beach in one of the first engine powered flights by aircraft in Ireland. He completed the flight in an attempt to win a £100 prize offered by the town for the first powered flight along the strand. His first take off ended badly, but according to a modern newspaper report 'He flew a distance of almost three miles along the foreshore at a low altitude varying between fifty and five hundred feet'. This event is recorded by a plaque on the promenade.

For the past two weekends in a row I've witnessed some of the most spectacular light I have ever seen in my life. How did I come to be standing on the bank of the Owens River when the sky erupted last Saturday? First, there was Ryan Engstrom who suggested that we shoot in this location when we met up last year in Death Valley. But there was no snow to speak of last year in the Eastern Sierras and it added another several hours to my trip home, so I bailed. Secondly, I finally plopped down $30 for a one year subscription to Skyfire on my Photographers Ephemeris app, and it had the area around Bishop pegged at a 90 percent chance of a blazing sunrise for last Sunday. So at 7 PM last Saturday, I threw my gear in the car and I was off.
This was my third trip to the Eastern Sierras since Summer, and I have to admit that I'm becoming something of an addict. There's just something about that early morning light hitting the snow on the Eastern Sierras that puts this mountain range in a league of it's own. It must have been after a sunrise much like this one that prompted John Muir to write:
And from the Eastern boundary of this vast golden flower bed rose the might sierra, miles in height, and so gloriously colored and so radiant, it seemed not clothed with light but wholly composed of it, like the wall of some celestial city...Then it seemed to me that the sierra should be called, not the Nevada or Snowy Range, but the Range of Light.

This is an experiment in tone mapping. Everything in the image is real, just processed in software instead of in camera. Silkypix does not do a great job of recovering shadows in an image which has been intentionally underexposed to capture highlights, so this was created in a trial version of Affinity Photo which is another subscription-free, non catalogue based photo editor. The tone mapping tools make it easy to generate reasonably realistic results although this one was based on a creative preset. In the original image, the foreground is almost black, so it certainly does the job and generates fewer artifacts than my other tone mapping-capable software, Corel Paintshop Pro.

Finally I installed the subscription version of Lightroom as my legacy version stopped working one day! So far, I am loving it! These photos were taken last month but never processed. This tiny day flying moth is endemic to pacific northwest but can be also found in the bay area and Pt. Reyes.
As flickr has now doubled the subscription fee and mine is due soon, I thought I would start posting again.......though I still won't have much time, if any, for commenting (this is the reason I've not been posting) so I shall probably just post and run.....please just enjoy looking.

Asha and I have moved to a new account on flickr (ashaconniekells), hopefully the above link will take you straight to us. Decided as Asha was the most important in this relationship on flickr I would put her name first. As you know flickr has changed their rules for non pro account holders to only upload 1000 pictures. I debated whether to go Pro or not and came up with the conclusion that it would be better to open a new account and continue on from there. There were two main reasons, the first being I didn't want to get into a yearly contract in case some time in the future I wasn't able to pay the yearly subscription and I had thousands of pictures....Would flickr delete all the pictures over 1000? Also with my years being on flickr I've come to realise that most people don't go that far back on your photostream, they just don't have the time to go further back than 10 pages (most would just view the current page I'm sure so what is the point in having more than 10 pages?).
I hope our friends and followers on flickr understand our reasons and will follow Asha and myself over to our new account. I hope in time I will get around to following all our friends and followers on our new account. I have actually added all the pictures here into 'Galleries' on our new account so if you are in our new account you can still see these older pictures in 'Galleries'.
I'm going to continue to keep this account open as well and will come into it from time to time to keep it active in case flickr delete it because of inactivity. So you might still get faves from here and I will probably upload some of the pictures to groups etc to keep it active.

There is not much for me to say about myself other than I have a Border Collie called Asha whom I love dearly and love to take pictures of her as she literally poses for the camera. I'm not a photographer only started taking pictures when I discovered Asha will pose for them which I'm told is extremely rare for dogs to do as they are generally camera shy. Asha has loads of personality and I hope this comes through in my pictures of her and pulls up for my lack of ability at taking pictures as I literally know nothing about photography. I hope you enjoy looking at my pictures of Asha....Thank you for looking...Connie and Asha xxx

SITUATED IN DOUGLAS BAY, THE TOWER CAME INTO BEING AFTER RNLI FOUNDER WILLIAM HILLARY PETITIONED FOR A SANCTUARY TO BE BUILT ON ST MARY'S ISLE. A PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION PLUS £78 OF SIR WILLIAM'S OWN MONEY MET THE BUILDING COSTS OF £250. TOWER OF REFUGE WAS COMPLETED IN 1832 AND IS 12.5 METERS HIGH AND 52 METERS AROUND ITS CIRCUMFERENCE.
THE REEF ON WHICH IT IS BUILT WAS PREVIOUSLY OFTEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE AND SINKING OF SHIPS AND SO THE TOWER PROVIDED BOTH A VISIBLE WARNING FOR INCOMING SHIPS AND A REFUGE FOR THOSE IN DISTRESS.
THE TOWER IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC HOWEVER ACCESS IS DIFFICULT DUE TO ITS LOCATION. WHEN THE TIDE IS LOW ENOUGH, IT IS A POPULAR ACTIVITY TO VENTURE OUT IN THE BAY TO THE TOWER. VISITORS DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK AND MUST BE AWARE OF RISING TIDES TO AVOID BECOMING STRANDED.

The Kendal memorial stands in Market Place, Kendal and takes the form of a serviceman atop a pedestal with laurel wreaths at each corner, there is a four-stepped base. There are 316 names for World War 1 and 168 names for World War 2. The memorial was sponsored by public subscription and unveiled by Colonel J W Weston in 1921; the sculptor was C W Coombes.
The real heritage on display at NJ Transit's "Meet Our Rail Fleet: Past and Present" event were these two pieces. Lackawanna subscription car 2454 and Erie Lackawanna U34CH 3372 were reunited for the day and displayed next to the train shed at Hoboken Terminal. 2454 was built as a locomotive hauled club car in 1912. It was converted to an MU trailer subscription-only club car in 1930 when Lackawanna electrified its suburban commuter service. 3372 was built in 1971 for Erie Lackawanna and served here along with 2454 until the Lackawanna electrics were retired in 1984. Both museum pieces look right at home in Hoboken.

Recently restored Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Subscription Club Car no. 2454 is seen on the end of the Whippany Railway Museum's excursion train on May 19, 2024, during the museum's 175th Anniversary of the CNJ event. Originally built by Barney & Smith in 1912 as open platform subscription car 484, the car was converted to a vestibule-equipped multiple unit (MU) trailer in the 1930s by American Car & Foundry. It was one of only five MU subscription cars built for the railroad, and operated on a service between Hoboken and Gladstone catering to the wealthy members of the club. Notably the car was the only Lackawanna MU to ever receive air conditioning, and was the lead car on multiple farewell runs for these cars, including the very last NJ Transit train that used the Lackawanna MUs in 1984. Car 2454 was acquired by the United Railway Historical Society of NJ, which began restoration of it in 2014. Exterior restoration was completed by 2018 and the car was moved to Whippany in 2019, where interior restoration would take place, coming to completion in 2021.

The Grade II* Listed Ellis Windmill on Mill Road in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
At one time nine windmills stood along the west face of Mill Road over the steep slopes of the Lincoln Edge, these days only Ellis Windmill which was built in 1798 remains. There are documentary references to mills along the road from the early 16th century.
Tower mill of 3 floors with 4 sails, ogee domed wooden cap and fantail. Construction of brick painted black. Door on ground level. Horizontally sliding square windows with stone sills and segmental arches.
The first recorded owner of Ellis’ Mill was a wealthy landowner named Anthony Meres. It went through a succession of owners until December 1894 when John Ellis bought the mill for £250. He died in 1920, but his wife and son successively retained ownership until 1973. The mill was still in working order in 1940, but lost its sails in 1941, when Frank Ellis was the miller.
The Mill remained fully operational until it fell into receivership in 1973 and in 1974 a fire destroyed all of the remaining woodwork. In 1977 the Lincoln Civic Trust acquired the mill and began its reconstruction, led by Chris Salisbury, millwright.
A cap mechanism was acquired from ‘Subscription Mill’ in Sturton-by-Stow and the stones and drives from ‘Eno’s Mill’ at Toynton-all-Saints and the sails and fantail were made by Thompson and Co from Alford. The reconstruction was completed in 1980 and milling began again in 1981. Lincolnshire County Council took it over in 1995.
The brick foundations of an ancillary building in the north-east part of the site were recorded in 2006, along with a short length of brick wall and a stone wall or foundation immediately north of the mill. Ellis Mill remains a working mill producing flour and is open to the public on Saturday afternoons.

It was another gray, cruddy day here so I had to find something around the house to serve as my subject for the day. For our anniversary, my husband got me a subscription to a succulent of the month club. They send 2 little succulent plants a month. This little guy was from the last pairing. I'm a big fan of succulents & sedums. I like any plant that is easy to keep alive... But it is how easily they can be grown and spread from clippings of a plant that fascinates me. Pluck any part off a plant and put it in the ground and it can turn into an entirely new plant. One plant becomes many. You can walk thru a store and pull a tiny leaf off a plant, take it home a voila, you have your own plant (is that wrong to do? maybe? the plant I picked it off of isn't going to miss it, so I think no...).
