Medley Footbridge is a pedestrian bridge across the River Thames near the village of Binsey in Oxford, England. It is also known as Rainbow Bridge, The bridge joins the west bank of the river to Fiddler's Island in the stream.
The bridge bears a plaque with a misspelling which apparently gave rise to a third name, the 'Subscription Bridge':
This bridge was erected by public subscription through the exertion and during the shrievalty of Henry Grant Esquire. A.D. 1865.
A second plaque, using the name Rainbow Bridge, records its restoration in 1997.
At the start of lockdown, feeling afraid to go into shops, hating the idea of wearing masks, Ray took out an online subscription to his favourite newspaper. Over 2 years later, no actual newspaper has entered our house as he reads the paper on his iPad, beginning alongside the first cuppa of the day. I hate tablets and the last thing I would do is read anything of length on one, thus I am now less than ever au fait with current events.
Recently, Ray and friends were discussing the current Conservative leadership contest when I asked' Who IS this chap Truss?" then wondered why they all fell about laughing..
Give me a beautiful French novel to read any day and if I'm labelled eccentric, it bothers me not.
There is a tree lined avenue to Umberslade Park which is in Tanworth-in-Arden. I have upgraded my Nik subscription so having fun with the Silver Efex Pro 2. I did not have to wait too long to get a few people to frame under the bridge.

The Chaine Memorial Tower in Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is a memorial to James Chaine, a former Member of Parliament for Antrim, who died in 1885. It is a cylindrical stone tower lighthouse, situated on the west side of the entrance to Larne Lough.
Chaine developed Larne's short sea route to Scotland as well as establishing the town as a transatlantic port. The memorial, built in 1888, by public subscription, is a replica of an Irish round tower.
The plaque which adorns the memorial reads that the monument was erected by the "....contributions of every class in this mixed community irrespective of creed or party, all cordially united in esteem and affection for the Memory of JAMES CHAINE of Ballycraigy and Cairncastle Co. Antrim who represented this County in the Imperial Parliament of Great Britain and Ireland from February 1874 till 4 May 1885 when his early and lamented death in his 44th year of his age deprived his native County of one who had worked indefatigably for its interests especially in developing and improving the natural capabilities of the harbour of Larne and establishing its connection with Great Britain, the United States of America and with the inland parts of this County."
If the plaque is to be believed, James Chaine was universally esteemed and well regarded.
Unlike Chaine's memorial plaque, which was inscribed after his death, the prophet Isaiah wrote about the Messiah Jesus some 700 years before he was born! Isaiah's description is undeniably accurate and foretells a man who would be totally without the esteem of his contemporaries, and yet he would lay down his life for them (and us).
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Created in 1874 by subscription, meaning it was built or created through donations or payments made by a group of people. I can't find any info to show how long it was used for, but it's good to see the cup on its chain is still there.
It looks to have been restored at some point during the 1800s as well, but it's difficult to see the date.

Did you know that Mono Lake has a subscription for the greatest sunsets of all times? Every time it looks too cloudy, the clouds rapidly thin out once the Sierras swallow the sun, and magnificent hues of pink surprise me once again. With this image, I tried to render the cloud color exactly as seen. It was hard to keep the composure and even harder to still keep focus bracketing knowing the clock was ticking fast. "All in all, you're just another brick in the wall."

Rittenhouse Square is the name of both a public park and the surrounding neighborhood that is referred to also as Rittenhouse in Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The park is one of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn and his surveyor Thomas Holme during the late 17th century. The neighborhood is among the highest-income urban neighborhoods in the country. Together with Fitler Square, the Rittenhouse neighborhood and the square, comprise the Rittenhouse Fitler Historic District. Rittenhouse Square Park is maintained by the non-profit group, The Friends of Rittenhouse Square.[2] Known as "the Square," the park is widely considered one of the finest urban public spaces in the United States.[citation needed] The square cuts off 19th Street at Walnut Street and also at a half block above Manning Street. This is the second floor of the BEAUTIFUL Multnomah County Library. In Portland Oregon.
It dates its existence from 1864, a time when Portland was a frontier town with frame buildings, muddy streets and few sidewalks. A small group of Portland citizens met to establish a subscription library and reading room, organizing under the name "Library Association of Portland."
And this is what was finally established, an incredibly fantastic piece of architecture. I almost break into song everytime I walk in but they SHUSH me.

Among the closest star clusters is M45, colloquially known as the "Seven Sisters". Due to its close proximity (a mere 440 light-years), and population of extremely hot and luminous stars, it can be easily seen with the naked eye near the constellation of Taurus. The number of visible stars in this open cluster can quickly tell an astronomer how dark a location is on a night of observation. Up to fourteen of the more than one thousand stars in M45 can be seen with the unaided eye.
The bright blue clouds surrounding the stars forms a reflection nebula known as the Maia Nebula. The enormous cloud of dust reflects the light from the hot young stars and was once assumed to be the remnants of the young stars' births, but is now known to be the serendipitous interaction of this unrelated dusty region being illuminated by the open cluster of stars passing through its interstellar neighborhood.

Tom Engelhardt:: Who Really Has Blood On Their Hands?
"Consider the following statement offered by Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a news conference last week. He was discussing Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks as well as the person who has taken responsibility for the vast, still ongoing Afghan War document dump at that site. "Mr. Assange,” Mullen commented, “can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family.”
Now, if you were the proverbial fair-minded visitor from Mars (who in school civics texts of my childhood always seemed to land on Main Street, U.S.A., to survey the wonders of our American system), you might be a bit taken aback by Mullen’s statement. After all, one of the revelations in the trove of leaked documents Assange put online had to do with how much blood from innocent Afghan civilians was already on American hands.
The British Guardian was one of three publications given early access to the leaked archive, and it began its main article this way: “A huge cache of secret U.S. military files today provides a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents. They range from the shootings of individual innocents to the often massive loss of life from air strikes...” Or as the paper added in a piece headlined “Secret CIA paramilitaries’ role in civilian deaths”: “Behind the military jargon, the war logs are littered with accounts of civilian tragedies.
The 144 entries in the logs recording some of these so-called ‘blue on white’ events, cover a wide spectrum of day-by-day assaults on Afghans, with hundreds of casualties.” Or as it also reported, when exploring documents related to Task Force 373, an “undisclosed ‘black’ unit” of U.S. special operations forces focused on assassinating Taliban and al-Qaeda “senior officials”: “The logs reveal that TF 373 has also killed civilian men, women, and children and even Afghan police officers who have strayed into its path.”
Admittedly, the events recorded in the Wikileaks archive took place between 2004 and the end of 2009, and so don’t cover the last six months of the Obama administration’s across-the-board surge in Afghanistan. Then again, Admiral Mullen became chairman of the Joint Chiefs in October 2007, and so has been at the helm of the American war machine for more than two of the years in question.
He was, for example, chairman in July 2008, when an American plane or planes took out an Afghan bridal party -- 70 to 90 strong and made up mostly of women -- on a road near the Pakistani border. They were "escorting the bride to meet her groom as local tradition dictates." The bride, whose name we don’t know, died, as did at least 27 other members of the party, including children. Mullen was similarly chairman in August 2008 when a memorial service for a tribal leader in the village of Azizabad in Afghanistan’s Herat Province was hit by repeated U.S. air strikes that killed at least 90 civilians, including perhaps 15 women and up to 60 children. Among the dead were 76 members of one extended family, headed by Reza Khan, a "wealthy businessman with construction and security contracts with the nearby American base at Shindand airport."
Mullen was still chairman in April 2009 when members of the family of Awal Khan, an Afghan army artillery commander on duty elsewhere, were killed in a U.S.-led raid in Khost province in eastern Afghanistan. Among them were his "schoolteacher wife, a 17-year-old daughter named Nadia, a 15-year-old son, Aimal, and his brother, employed by a government department.” Another daughter was wounded and the pregnant wife of Khan's cousin was shot five times in the abdomen.
Mullen remained chairman when, in November 2009, two relatives of Majidullah Qarar, the spokesman for the Minister of Agriculture, were shot down in cold blood in Ghazni City in a Special Operations night raid; as he was -- and here we move beyond the Wikileaks time frame -- when, in February 2010, U.S. Special Forces troops in helicopters struck a convoy of mini-buses, killing up to 27 civilians, including women and children; as he also was when, in that same month, in a special operations night raid, two pregnant women and a teenage girl, as well as a police officer and his brother, were shot to death in their home in a village near Gardez, the capital of Paktia province. After which, the soldiers reportedly dug the bullets out of the bodies, washed the wounds with alcohol, and tried to cover the incident up. He was no less chairman late last month when residents of a small town in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan claimed that a NATO missile attack had killed 52 civilians, an incident that, like just about every other one mentioned above and so many more, was initially denied by U.S. and NATO spokespeople and is now being “investigated.” "

The Afghan War Diary (also called The War Logs) is a collection of internal U.S. military logs of the War in Afghanistan published by Wikileaks on 25 July 2010.
The logs consist of 91,731 documents, covering the period between January 2004 and December 2009. Most of the documents were classified as "secret", which The New York Times called "a relatively low level of classification".
As of 28 July 2010, only 75,000 of the documents have been released to the public, a move which Wikileaks says is "part of a harm minimization process demanded by [the] source". Prior to releasing the initial 75,000 documents, Wikileaks made the logs available to The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel in its German and English on-line edition which published reports per previous agreement on that same day, July 25, 2010."

"One surprising consequence of the war in Iraq is the surrender of postmodernism to a victorious modernism. This has been largely overlooked in North America.
In reaction to the U.S. intervention in Iraq, Jacques Derrida, a famous postmodernist, signed on as co-author of an article drafted by the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, previously an opponent of his, in an unmistakable endorsement of modernist Enlightenment principles. Derrida, the apostle of deconstructionism, is now advocating some decidedly constructive and Eurocentric activism.
The article appeared simultaneously in two newspapers on May 31, in German in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as "After the War: The Rebirth of Europe," and in French in Libération, less triumphantly, as "A Plea for a Common Foreign Policy: The demonstrations of Feb. 15 against the war in Iraq designed a new European public space."
Other famous intellectuals joined in with supportive newspaper articles of their own: Umberto Eco (of The Name of the Rose) and Gianni Vattimo in Italy and an American philosopher, Richard Rorty. This provoked much discussion in Europe, but only a few comments so far in North America, the Boston Globe and the Village Voice being rare exceptions.
This week in Montreal, there was an anti-globalization riot in which windows were broken in protest against a World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting. But the Habermas-Derrida declaration praises the WTO and even the International Monetary Fund as part of Weltinnenpolitik: maddeningly hard to translate, but something like "global domestic policy" or "external internal policy."
Yet it is not much of a stretch to claim the young anti-globalists as disciples of postmodernism and Derrida, who has hitherto been a foe of "logocentrism" (putting reason at the centre), "phallologocentrism" (reason is an erect male organ and, as such, damnably central) and Eurocentrism (the old, old West is the homeland of all of the above).
Derrida added a note to the article, observing most people would recognize Habermas's style and thinking in the piece, and that he hadn't had time to write a separate piece. But notwithstanding his "past confrontations" with Habermas (Derrida had objected to being called a "Judaistic mystic," for one thing), he agreed with the article he had signed, which calls for new European responsibilities "beyond all Eurocentrism" and the strengthening of international law and international institutions."

Recently restored Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Subscription Club Car no. 2454 is seen on the end of the Whippany Railway Museum's excursion train on May 19, 2024, during the museum's 175th Anniversary of the CNJ event. Originally built by Barney & Smith in 1912 as open platform subscription car 484, the car was converted to a vestibule-equipped multiple unit (MU) trailer in the 1930s by American Car & Foundry. It was one of only five MU subscription cars built for the railroad, and operated on a service between Hoboken and Gladstone catering to the wealthy members of the club. Notably the car was the only Lackawanna MU to ever receive air conditioning, and was the lead car on multiple farewell runs for these cars, including the very last NJ Transit train that used the Lackawanna MUs in 1984. Car 2454 was acquired by the United Railway Historical Society of NJ, which began restoration of it in 2014. Exterior restoration was completed by 2018 and the car was moved to Whippany in 2019, where interior restoration would take place, coming to completion in 2021.

The window was provided by public subscription in memory of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his companions who died in March 1912 on the return journey from the South Pole. Captain Scott was the brother in law to the Reverend Lloyd Bruce.
The window was made by Charles Kempe and co from a design made by John Lisle. The window was dedicated on the 26th September 1915
The Story
This mother and cub (child) was passing by while we was doing some climatic research in the Fram Straight. I think the scene was a bit interesting with the birds in the background. The colors up here is really special. The Polar Bear is the biggest of all bears. This day we saw 19 of them. This mother and cub was close to a big male bear. That is unusual to see. The male Polar Bear is known of killing the cubs so he can get the mother interested in him. But nothing happened, not as long as we was there.
