Design Statement - Abstract
The courtyard is the new focus of the Museum and a new place for the town to engage with its’ Museum and art gallery. The courtyard space provides an area suitable for public sculpture display that can contribute to the street scene.
The courtyard is veiled by a screen to the front elevation. The screen maintains the strong traditional building line of the street but invites visual penetration to the semi public space of the courtyard. The screen and the courtyard beyond reinforce the entrance by giving it a new relevance to the surrounding gallery spaces. The screen has been developed in collaboration with an artist and holds the possibility of being renewable as part of future artists’ projects. The suggested design has a vibrant arts and crafts motif formed by two layers of suspended pressed metal and reflects on the city’s Regency ironwork heritage.
The existing entrance is retained as an entry point from the street but inside the space is given new meaning by virtue of its’ aspect to the courtyard and the visible connection with the gallery floor. A new escalator is able to rapidly convey visitors up two levels to the start of their journey through the gallery spaces.
The new gallery arrangement is intended to connect into the existing Museum and reinforce the east–west axis. The exhibition spaces are treated as a series of varying sized rooms in a flexible arrangement where the display areas can be extended to include the spaces of the Hospitality Suite and meeting Room. The Temporary Exhibition space is located on the top level in order to maximise hanging heights, natural lighting and flexible wall arrangements.
The building will fully embrace current agendas for sustainability and energy efficiency, maximising the use recycled materials and products from renewable sources, ensuring high levels of insulation, built-in thermal mass, reducing solar gains, maximising use of natural lighting, natural ventilation with summer cooling. A “green wall” creates moist area in the courtyard for evaporative cooling and a cool oasis for drawing air into the building. Roof lights, wall boxes and screened light are used to introduce and control daylight. A large section of roof is sloped facing south and would be used for either photovoltaics or solar collectors.
A departure from the norm for me... spent some time in the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Galleries with my 10-20 sigma lens... I loved the positioning of this penetent sculpture, called 'Submission', gazing upon the iconic Salvidor Dali canvas of 'Christ of Saint John of the Cross' (1951)

Well, I uploaded something a little different today. I normally dont do this, but I feel like posting some of my work, since I've run out of things to photograph in my house. I just finished this the other day for our school district, I hope I win so I can get it displayed on the highway and at all the schools.
This was originally shot for submission to the One Day project (aday.org). Submission policies (I learned later) apparently require the consent of all subjects as well as permission for the use of all copyright and trademarked images (e.g., logos), all of which is impractical given the way I shoot.

The Puppies with Promise puppy raising club received 5 new puppies Easter morning so they got some great Easter hunt pictures! The new puppies are: Janine, Juniper, Lancelot, Kent and Padma. The older dogs are: Amos, Halima, Lupine, Natasha and Tony.

Shipwreck suddenly dives at Darklon, reaching for his gas mask! Darklon reacts and falls to the floor! Shipwreck stays on top of him, reaching tirelessly to tear the mask from Darklon’s head!
Darklon: Stop! STOP! Ok! I’ll help you! What do you want?
Still on top of Darklon ensuring submission, Shipwreck replies.
Shipwreck: First tell me what the Grenadier plan is here, ok? What’s your angle?
Darklon: I dunno! I thought I knew, but suddenly Venomous Maximus is calling the shots! All that I know is that this whole Castle is crawling with infection now! The ventilation system’s been breached! It’s just a matter of time until anyone without a gas mask is gonna turn in to a mutant monster!
Shipwreck gets up and offers a hand to Darklon below. A hand that Darklon accepts.
Shipwreck: Darklon, you gotta think! What could Destro possibly gain from keeping all of us locked in here? Is he holding us hostage? For ransom? Does he want to study the mutants? Think!
Darklon: I don’t know! Destro didn’t know this was gonna happen! He couldn’t have! All I know is the Iron Grenadiers were ordered to help your team in South America, and that’s it!
Shipwreck: Or maybe he DID know this was gonna happen!
Darklon: What? How?
Shipwreck: It’s not like Destro to endanger his troops like this. He ain’t Cobra Commander. Destro takes risk, but the risk is always calculated.
Darklon adjusts his mask with his hands while he responds. He is satisfied that the mask was not compromised.
Darklon: Get to the point, sailor!
Shipwreck: My point is, I think Destro knows exactly what he’s doing. Which means that we have the luxury of a little bit more time. He’s not gonna blow up his castle but he might want his troops to mutate. I figure that all we need to do is get to a communications hub. Are you with me?
Darklon: You want to phone Destro?
Shipwreck: Nah. I don’t think he likes me much. I have a much better idea!

Project: Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum- RIBA Open Design Competition
Project Description:
Our Design strategy is to formally and functionally integrate the addition and re-model of the Museum by creating an
anchoring building that embraces three different centuries. The transparent - reflective façade becomes the 21st
Century’s counterpoint to the 1889 building’s corner tower.
In order to achieve our strategy, we proposed the demolition of the existing buildings No 53 & 55 on Clarence Street
and the Cottages on Chester Walk Street, where our anchoring building is laid out.
The glass tower confidently marks the entrance to the new Museum, with a multistory atrium that anchors the vertical
and horizontal circulations, providing unique views towards the historical site.
Functionally, the ground floor holds all public areas and the proposed Community and Picture Gallery; the first floor has
been destined to regroup and expand all open and educational stores; the second floor completes the main Art Gallery
& Museum area by centralizing and relocating all existing and additional exhibition gallery spaces required; the third
floor gathers the administrative offices that peripherally surround a green environmental patio.
From an environmental point of view, the glass façade captures solar energy through thin film photovoltaics, and works
as a grid connected power generator, reducing the building’s energy expenditures.
The addition also proposes a “green roof top” that doubles as a sculpture garden and additional exhibition space.
Parts of the Clarence façade are clad in re-constituted clay profiles that are made out of reclaimed masonry from the
site’s demolished buildings. These provide an attractive resilient material as well as tangible –touchable- historical
continuity with the building’s past.
