Shot many details of what I think is a very old Katana.
Notice the old style red bronze.
Note details. The mark I thought might be a signature has been viewed at 20x, but it's faint. Looks like the English letters "ni", lower case, but rough edged. Indeed, it's about 1/16" high, and I think it's just scratching or a forging flaw.
RE: band markings--
From a scholar on Japanese, with good knowledge of blades (NOT ME...I can't even sort out the structural terminology)....
"The kanji ( ideographic writing in Japanese ) on the katana is a date, not a signature. The other side is also inscribed, and if dated they are typically signed. He said the letters/numbers are a combination of "standard nenki and kanshi (zodiac). That is very unusual, and it dates the item, or at least, it provides a date which MAY have to do with when it was made.
It reads Empo Go Tschinoto Hinoto Nen Ichi Gatsu Bi. This would put it between 1673 and 1682. This is an odd combination using Tschinoto Hinoto, which is extremely uncommon and odd. However, logically, it seemingly could not be a "fake"...."fakes" are duplicated concocted to MAKE MONEY and invariably involve false but known provenance. This is a "MYSTERY" and very curious."
