A sort of mashup of the Large Hadron Collider and Cologne Cathedral. The students wanted to explore a point made by Alvin M. Weinberg in his 1961 Science article about "Big Science" where he likened large scientific projects to cathedrals. There are full details in the notes for this picture.

It's part of the "group projects" activity we set our MSc students every year (see the full set for details/ more examples).

Part of this year's MSc Science Communication "group project" work. See full details and more examples here.

This group wanted to explore some of the similarities between the Romantic movement and Science. They took a piece of Romantic Art (Constable's The Hay Wain) and playfully re-made it more "scientifically". For a start, the divided it up into layers, which also makes it pleasingly 3D (sadly, this is just a pic, the full version is loads of fun to look around and explore). They also played with a range of materials, and (the best bit...) hid some secret detail using notes drawn with a UV pen. That's what the purple stick is - a UV light.

You can see some pictures of the UV notes here, and a shot showing the comparision of this 3D piece to the original artwork here.
