Why does the spectral center (weighted average bin) "hum" as you do a frequency sweep?
Update: it "hums" because the spectral center is one of the worst ways to do frequency estimation! web.archive.org/web/20071011064215/http://home.comcast.ne...

Trying out my new lense while on crutches. I just walked around the corner from my flat and took some shots if the old mill.

Oak Park, Illinois is home to the world's largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings and houses, with 25 structures built between 1889 and 1913. It was in our village that Wright developed and perfected his signature Prairie Style architecture, emphasizing the use of interior light and open spaces in low, earth-hugging buildings. His designs changed the course of 20th century architecture. Many of the Wright houses and buildings in Oak Park and River Forest are registered National Historic Landmarks.
We invite you to take a "walking" Photo Tour of the Wright architecture in Oak Park, or, you can choose to look at the individual houses and buildings on these pages, organized by Date or Name.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust sponsors many "Wright" events each month, and offers daily walking tours of the Wright Houses in Oak Park. One highlight is the annual Wright Plus Housewalk.
The Guide to Frank Lloyd Wright & Prarire School Architecture in Oak Park by Paul E. Sprague, published 1986 by the Village of Oak Park, is an excellent reference about Wright's architecture and houses in Oak Park. The commentary and descriptions of the Wright designed residential properties featured on this site are frequently excerpted from this text.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust Book Catalog offers a selection of guidebooks which can be ordered online.
The "Wright in Oak Park" website and its photo tours are part of the Oak Park Tourist, and are not connected with nor sponsored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.

Structure 26 is a pyramid and temple that was constructed in layers between 480 and 755 CE. Its most distinguishing feature is the Hieroglyphic Stairway (Escalinata JeroglÃfica) on its western side. It was constructed in 710 CE but reinstalled when the final expansion took place in 755 CE. The temple-pyramid projects northwards from the Acropolis and is immediately to the north of Structure 22.
It is the longest pre-Columbian hieroglyphic inscription in the Americas. Over 2,000 hieroglyphs on 63 steps recount much of the history of Copán, perhaps the most powerful city state in the southern Maya cultural area. Only the lower 15 steps were preserved in their original order; the remaining steps were reconstructed in 1937-40. The stairway is covered by a canvas canopy to prevent further erosion.

I haven't been able to spend as much time with photography or on Flickr as I would have liked the past couple weeks. I'm sure everyone's been busy with the holidays. Unfortunately I got a nasty cold for Christmas and I've been spending most of my time in bed. Hopefully it won't take me too long to catch up on all your photos!

Vestigial structures – a structure that is rudimentary and of marginal or no use to the organism.
Pictured here is a scar on my brother's abdomen. He had to have his appendix removed because of an infection, and because the organ is vestigial, there were no ill effects after removal.
Built in 1888 by Franklin W. Smith, this Moorish Revival and Spanish Baroque Revival-style structure, originally known as the Casa Monica Hotel, was sold to Henry Flagler, proprietor of the adjacent Hotel Alcazar and Ponce de Leon Hotel, less than a year after its completion. Flagler renamed the hotel the Cordova Hotel, and operated it in conjunction with his two other hotels. In 1902, a skybridge was built over Cordova Street from the adjacent Hotel Alcazar, linking the two structures, and the Cordova Hotel became known as the Hotel Alcazar Annex, with the two structures operating as a single hotel. In 1932, the adjacent Hotel Alcazar was closed, and, in 1945, the skybridge was demolished. In 1962, the hotel was purchased by St. John’s County for usage as the St. John’s County Courthouse, and the structure was renovated, covering the exterior in stucco, removing the famous Sun Parlor from the interior, and adding a large entrance with Corinthian columns and Spanish Revival-style elements to the Cordova Street facade, removing a four-story Moorish Revival-style porch structure in the process. During the renovation, in 1964, the lobby was utilized as a holding area for police dogs, which were subsequently utilized against Civil Rights demonstrators in the city. Following the completion of renovations in 1968, the building was utilized as the county courthouse until 1997, when the building was purchased by Richard Kessler, with the building being extensively renovated, opening once again as a luxury hotel in 1999. The hotel today is one of the most prestigious in the state of Florida, offering luxury accommodations. The building is a contributing structure in the St. Augustine Town Plan Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
