Just after midnight, Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a report of a fire on the 8th floor of the North Tower of the Santa Catalina Dorms. Initial reports indicated, AND I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP, that there was a toilet on fire. Upon arrival, Engine 11 found that it was in fact a trashcan on fire, which made much more sense. After about an hour, the residents of the north tower were allowed back in the building.

I was doing a local flight around Santa Cruz, Hollister and south San Jose tonight. As I was departing the Hollister airport I noticed smoke and fire nearby, flames were visible from many miles away.
I departed Hollister airport and was heading to San Jose South County airport so flew right past this fire. I didn't have my "real" camera in the plane tonight, but snapped a few iPhone pictures as I passed the scene.
Digital zoom, a moving airplane, low light, and a camera phone add up to a pretty poor image, my apologies.
