SAN FERNANDO - Over 100 LAFD firefighters responded to a structure fire in a one-story church in the City of San Fernando on July 9, 2024. Ambient temperatures of up to 105°F were recorded outside, as firefighters went to work cutting open the roof from above, and penetrating the ceilings from below, to make access to the stubborn attic fire. The occupants who were inside the building at the time safely evacuated prior to LAFD arrival. Crews continued battling in the hot weather to eliminate all remaining fire in just over two hours. During the incident, four firefighters sought medical help from on-scene paramedics due to heat-related illness. Three of them rested and recovered on scene and then continue working, and one was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and care. The fire appeared to have been caused by rooftop construction, but the official cause is still under investigation.

I was doing a local flight around Santa Cruz, Hollister and south San Jose tonight. As I was departing the Hollister airport I noticed smoke and fire nearby, flames were visible from many miles away.
I departed Hollister airport and was heading to San Jose South County airport so flew right past this fire. I didn't have my "real" camera in the plane tonight, but snapped a few iPhone pictures as I passed the scene.
Digital zoom, a moving airplane, low light, and a camera phone add up to a pretty poor image, my apologies.

Major Emergency Structure Fire in Downtown Los Angeles
At 1:12PM on June 19, 2025, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 215 E Winston Street in Downtown Los Angeles. The first arriving fire companies found a row of commercial buildings with smoke showing and initiated an offensive fire attack.
As firefighters made their way into the building, they encountered heavy storage conditions which hindered their ability to reach the seat of the fire toward the back of the building. Crews battled for over forty minutes, but the blaze extended into the adjoining structure and the intensity grew.
Due to deteriorating conditions and an unchecked fire, the incident commander, Assistant Chief Melford Beard, made the decision to transition to a defensive operation and deploy master streams.
Three hours into the incident, firefighters extinguished the bulk of the fire but due to remaining pockets of fire, official knockdown was not yet declared. The RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle was deployed to reach the fire remaining in areas unsafe for firefighters to access.
Over 100 firefighters fought diligently and saved the surrounding businesses, achieving knockdown at 7:27PM. The fire was held to the building of origin (built in 1916) and the adjacent structure on the east side. Per protocol for a Major Emergency structure fire, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) is conducting a cause investigation.
